Longer term means smaller AAV. It’s not outrageous considering in 2 years he can be sent to Seattle. People look way to much into this and criticize way to much.

Gearing up for playoff run
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>bjsherman66</b></div><div>You're wrong. Malkin has a -0.5 relative Corsi, which really isn't bad. Johnson's, however, sits at -6.1. That's a huge difference. His 3.6 GA/60 is also the second most out of all defenseman on the active roster (Ruhwedel's is 3.8) His 2.1 GF/60 is also the third worst among defenseman on the team (Riikola and Ruhwedel bellow him). His expected +/- is by far the worst, sitting at -4.2 with Sheahan next at -1.7. While you <em>might</em> be right that he's been starting to play better, that doesn't excuse the fact that he's been terrible for the majority of the season.</div></div>
Well of course it’s going to take a while to fit in with a team. But sure trade him while he starts getting good. It’s ridiculous. He’s been solid period. All the advanced stats might be there but his job is to be solid on the back and make a good first pass. That’s what he does.

I’m sure Malkin’s possession isn’t great either. But that isn’t even a good argument. For instance last game he was on the ice for 18 shots for and 3 against. He had a tremendous game, and he’s been getting better and better. So no, he’s not terrible.

Next year with Johnson buyout
Johnson, like it or not, has gotten better and better as the games go. This same old narrative is annoying. They are not going to buy him out, and see growth so far. If anything, they'll give Seattle incentives to take him.

De Haan is good. But we need johnson for a bottom pair, a solid guy who plays a solid game. De haan at that price is to unfriendly to the cap anyway, and unnecessary.

Have you looked at ian cole’s contract? What about Antoine Roussel’s? Both incredibly overpaid. Cole went to columbus and seriously underperformed. Johnson might not be the greatest thing in the world but he’s solid. He had more shot blocks than all pens d-man and also had a better first pass ratio than Rubwedel, Maatta, Schultz. He had a great 16/17 season, and was good before that despite being on defensively average teams.

Dumoulin is nowhere near being a 7th d-man on “most teams”. He’s a fantastic top 4 guy, who is very reliable and filled in for Letang to help backstop us to

You didn’t do your homework obviously, and gave a bad rating as a result. Hunwick and Pysyk both have 2 years left on their deals, and although Pysyk has 200,000 more to his contract, he’s a 26 year old, RHD (what JR is looking for), and logs a good amount of minutes and does pretty well. It would be a substantial upgrade to the D. Hunwick is close to 34 years old. We also get a second back. Jarry could be more expensive, but maybe then add in like a Jared McCann for a 4L centre.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pensfan89</b></div><div>Trochek isn’t an upgrade over Kessel. When trading a player like Kessel you aren’t looking for an upgrade and the only way you trade him is if you believe you have a replacement in place already. Doesn’t mean an upgrade. Not many players in the league would be an upgrade over Phil. We are lookin for a more complete team. Why trade him for a downgrade and no help elsewhere? You are literally trading for a downgrade, throwing in a 2nd and a prospect for a 1st. That doesn’t make sense to do. Might as well just keep Kessel for that.</div></div>
That was the whole point of this page, if Kessel were to go we would need to find a cheaper fit to plug back in. Otherwise there is not point in trading him. Getting a bottom six player and bottom six d man and a couple picks is useless for a trade with him.

Pens are full of RWs: Sprong, Hornqvist, Rust, ZAR. that's one reason why they would move Kessel, to make room for Sprong.</div></div>
Our backup goalie situation was anything but comfortable. DeSmith and Jarry played good, but we need someone there in case Murray gets injured again or in the playoffs for insurance as well.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Pensfan89</b></div><div>We don’t need a RW back. That’s one reason the pens are willing to trade him in he first place. The essentially have a cheaper and younger Kessel in their eyes with Sprong. And they have a ton of RW depth in the system. Hornqvist, Sprong, Rust, Sheary, Kuhnhackl, Simon, Rowney, ZAR can all play right wing and the pending free agents are all cheap lol. They need LW help and a 3rd pair RD so they can get Letangs minutes down now that he is getting older.
The AZ trade is just pointless for AZ to do. They are taking on a cap dump and retaining salary on their starter and giving up Domi. All they get is Jarry in this deal that’s worth anything and he isn’t much of an upgrade over Raanta right now</div></div>
Until Sprong or Simon or Sheary can put up 92 points in a season and make this team better by replacing Kessel, we need a better RW in return.

Isn’t Kuemper the starter? They’re going to want a better goalie than Raanta or Kuemper. And I’m sorry but Trocheck is a massive upgrade over Sheary on RW. There is no reason to trade Phil only to replace him with either Sprong, Simon, Sheary, or Kuhnackl in the role he plays—that jut makes us worse.
