Using cap space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>newballcoach</b></div><div>Toronto has no interest in doing that deal. Moving Murray will be much easier than that (as every trade in the NHL constantly teaches us)</div></div>
On top of which, the cap is expected to significantly rise in 2024, and the buyout for Murray would only cost 2 million in cap space that year. Is 2 million in cap space the season after the next worth a first? I doubt it.
And placing him in the minors would still be a few million on the cap this year, but he’s probably the best 3rd stringer in the league, lol.

I’m lukewarm on Gavrikov but could live with that.
Delete the schenn & Motte trades and try to target a true top 6W or 3C which should be our top priority .</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>The Holl hate is strong again today eh?</div></div>
I wasn't hating on Holl - I think he's a good player and I like the way he bounced back from the beginning of the year. I was looking more at cap implications with Motte and Gavrikov - Schenn was a low cost option that fit on the 3RD spot.
Though you're probably right, a 3C or 2LW would probably be the best option over Motte + Schenn. Kampf is solid defensively but I would prefer someone who could pop a bit more offensively, make the third line a legitimate scoring threat. I think we'll have to wait and see if Knies is the real deal in the NHL to see if there's help coming at the 2LW spot this year.

2023 Leafs
With the sens wanting to compete in the next year or two, I think their focus would be on a top pairing D and a bottom pairing D, both preferably right handed.

The extra year of Nylander’s contract is pretty valuable, and it wouldn’t make sense to mess with the core roster construction in this way (this year).

For how productive Meier is (and his age), you'd gotta imagine San Jose is asking for something akin to what we'd would be asking for Nylander.

Leafs need to make a big splash
I don't disagree that the Leafs should swing for the fences this year, but I think that Chychrun package isn't worth it to the Leafs. Sandin is a great young D now and is signed through next year at less than half of Chychrun's cap, and probably makes around the same after. Knies is probably in the show next year and has a skill set that compliments Matthews, Marner, and Tavares' game.
I don't know enough about Timo Meier but from his point totals I think it'll take more than that package to get him with retention.

Ideal fLyers deadline
The Leafs have quite a few pretty good looking prospects that you guys might be interested in over Robertson, like Moldenhaur, Minten, Voit, Hirvonen, and Steeves. I know the biggest two prospects are Knies and Niemela, but the length of your big contracts up front and on D look like futures and further-away prospects are more valuable than nearly ready players.
Robertson’s also out for like 6 months with a surgery, I don’t think he can be traded.

Kampf is the 3C, regardless of what's tweeted out for lines. He soaks up the minutes and has been surprisingly the best of the bottom 6 last year and this year.
The other deal-breaker in a couple of years is Niemela. Quality RD are hard to come by, and having one ready to replace Brodie is going to be pretty important. I don't think the Leafs can afford Horvat long-term, but they certainly afford Niemela during his ELC.

I'm pretty basic so I'd go with the SDPN popular one with Timo Meier.

Leafs TDL - Solid Depth
I'm not a fan of the JVR and Klingberg deals, I think we could get one asset on the left side that's cheaper than those two smaller deals.
Personally, I think we have too many D-men as is, and I've been super happy with the D-depth so far. I don't think they need another offensive minded d.
Nylander at C is a bit of a stretch, I don't think it's worked before and I'd prefer he get more than 3rd line minutes.

big wig moves
The Leafs are at contract maximum, you'd have to take on contracts for any trade to work.
Perhaps a lower-tier prospect like Kral or Hollowell would be a more appropriate trade piece for Savard (along with picks, obviously), but the timelines don't really make sense. Niemela's going to be an NHL player sooner rather than later, and Savard's contract exceeds Sandin and Liljegren's extensions. It would make more sense and be cheaper to offer teams just picks for a rental.
I don't really know Pezzetta, but his penalty minutes makes him look like more of a liability (per 60) than Simmonds.

D options
The rough part is, there has to be at least one contract going the other way - the leafs are at the 50 contract maximum. There's probably a move or two already scheduled out for the TDL to upgrade at LW (or even just sign Knies).
I think we're going to see no moves until January, depending on how much Sandin and Liljegren develop with the increased minutes. Hopefully Brodie's back soon.

I wouldn’t mind Schenn to increase D depth for a playoff run but I don’t think we need Horvat. A much smaller without Niemela or a 1st is probably super doable.

Not sure how you would turn those rentals into a top 10 pick. Maybe the best bet is your own pick. If there was an extention with either of those guys then chances would increase.</div></div>
Leafs are full on D. Unless they've suddenly given up on Sandin putting it together they're solid on the right, save for maybe a 3RD. Maybe not even then, Benn's looked pretty good as a 7D.
They've got Rielly - Brodie, Giordano - Liljegren, and Sandin - Holl. There's no need for a #1RD.
Ottawa has the cap and the need for a top RD, if they turn it around by the TDL I think they'd be interested.

Sorry Muzzy
Gio's playing great and having him out of the lineup with Holl in is kinda weird. I don't think we need a Patrick Kane level player with the wild cards like Steeves, Holmberg, Robertson, and Knies all available. Trading Sandin and Niemela will leave a much bigger problem sooner rather than later with the age or our D-corps and UFA status for most of them within a year or two.
Sandin's shaky this year but growing, trading him now would be a mistake.

Engvall-Kampf-Jarnkrok like to me that is basically the second coming of Engvall-Kampf-Mikheyev which was a solid 3rd line for us last year.
4th line can then be something like ZAR-Malgin-Simmonds or maybe u try and move Malgin and bring up Gaudette for a more feisty 4th line
But luckily thanks to Kubel claim Toronto can now go after someone without dumping a contract (well unless its for a Dman)</div></div>
This makes the most sense to me as well. Kampf has been too good in a shutdown role to be playing 4th line minutes. I'd be more interested in Holmberg and/or Steeves getting some minutes over Malgin at C and Simmonds on RW - I just think they're faster and bring out more of an 'energy fourth line' we've been looking for.
I loved watching Kerfoot play in the playoffs, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to where he belongs if Keefe ever plays Robertson with the top 6 (he doesn't belong in the bottom 6). Perhaps Robertson gets sent down to the minors to cook some more.
If Muzzin is going to retire I would interested in a physical but responsible third pairing guy over Holl, kinda like Bogosian or Lyubushkin.

I don't think we could afford having Kallgren as a permanent back-up yet, he's not shown to be quite good enough. I think he's a fine 3rd goalie but I don't really see him sticking as a backup.
It's also optimistic to think Murray and Muzzin are going to be LTIR'd forever. I don't know anything more about the Muzzin situation but Murray looks like he's coming back. If Knies is NHL ready you'd got to assume he's playing top line, where his game could shine getting the puck to Marner or Matthews.

Picks for the Leafs are pretty useless, they're competing right now. It would take a disgusting overpay that has to include one of your top 6. Starting with at least one of Suzuki, Caulfield, or Slaf, and then adding.
There's 3 years of 100 to 110 points/season to make up for right now. Odds are it'll look like an overpay.

From what I've heard of Soucy it's been that he's a physical, defensively pretty good guy. With Muzzin injured and Lyubushkin signed elsewhere, there's very little physical presence in front of the net. Holl would be good at that if he wanted to be that kind of d-man, but he's more offensive-minded. While I'm not a Holl hater, the roster needs a move the same way that they needed Lyubushkin when he came in.
