It gives Vancouver some cap space without using LTIR. Ottawa can either use him to either hit the floor if they need or just put him on LTIR.

Look at the post by alwaysnextyear. The rules are there, but if memory serves me right, no ELCs or UFAs, everyone is at least $1 million, one player from each team.

Free pick for Arizona I guess...:tearsofjoy . Does anyone know if either player has a shot at the NHL? Just from looking at their age and basic stats, I don't see why CBJ wanted to give up a pick for this guy

Pens are in win-now mode and are already close to the cap ceiling. They aren't really in a position to make this deal

Pens would probably want a better winger than Perreault for Brassard if they did this. I can't see anyone the Jets giving up anyone better to make this deal work.

(PIT / BUF) - 2019 4th for Sheary, Hunwick
Although Sheary scored 18 goals last year, he was invisible for most of the second half of the year and the playoffs. Hunwick never fit in and eventually lost his place to Chad Ruhwedel. Both players could play better in Buffalo, but both are question marks. And the Pens get over $5 mil in cap space to hopefully not sign Jack Johnson

I'd rather not keep any of Hunwick's salary with how close the Pens are to the ceiling. Simon is a fine player, but there are other players who can take his minutes, like Sprong and ZAR.

(DET / PHI) - 2018 cond. 4th & 2019 cond. 3rd for Mrázek (50% retained)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyWise</b></div><div>He isn't the Goalie he was 2 years ago and has attitude problems</div></div>
I know isn't near the goalie he was two years ago, but he's only 25, which is relatively young for a goalie. He can still rebound and be at least an average goaltender, which can be hard to find in the NHL today. And when a report says someone has attitude problems, it could be for many reasons, including when said player isn't doing well, which he wasn't. I wouldn't read too much into those reports.

I know the wings are in a cap crunch and probably had to make this trade, but how to you only get two mid-round conditional picks AND retain 50% salary for the rest of the season on a young starting goalie? I know he hasn't performed great this year, but he was nowhere near a lost cause.

(TOR / STL) - 2019 4th round pick for Soshnikov
Toronto gets a roster spot and a future pick for a player that would most likely never make the team consistently, Blues get a bottom six winger with some upside, and Soshnikov gets a fresh start. Wouldn't be surprised if Leivo gets moved before the deadline as well.

(LAK / OTT) - Phaneuf, Thompson for Gáborík, Shore
I'm still trying to wrap my head around this, but at least Phaneuf can hopefully finish his contract and improves the left side for the Kings right now. Gaborik hasn't been healthy in a long time and his three years older than Phaneuf with the same term and similar money now that Ottawa is retaining. I'm not Shore if a 4th line upgrade makes up for that factor. :)

It's currently Oduya, Borowiecki, Claesson, and an imaginary Marc Methot replacement. Yikes.

Pens get cap space to make the Oleksiak deal. Coyotes get a depth forward that can step into the lineup if needed.

Defensive depth for the Pens with the potential for a reclamation project similar to what they did for Schultz (although they are very different players). This probably means Cole is as good as gone now.

(PIT / DET) - Sheahan + 2018 5th for Wilson + 2018 3rd
Not a terrible deal. Wilson lost his fourth line spot to Kuhnackl, and the Pens have many wingers in the system who can replace him. Sheahan is not an optimal 3rd line center, but he should be given a chance. He could have more success with better wingers in Pittsburgh, where he could be playing with a combination of Hagelin, Rust, and Hornqvist. Best case scenario, Sheahan gets moved to 4LC when the Pens trade for a better guy at the trade deadline, possibly Galchenyuk as Darren Dregger mentioned the other day

Absolutely no chance of getting top 4. When he got his chances to play in the NHL, he didn't take them and always looked out of place. I'm glad the Pens got something for him while he still had some value, albeit very small, and the Canucks get someone who, in a new and different situation, can hopefully contribute to their lineup. Its sad Pouliot didn't work out in Pittsburgh, but best of luck to him in Vancouver.
