Panarin wouldn't cost draft picks would he. Putting Barzal on a line with marner and he puts up even 90 what do you think he will demand? You are also banking on teams helping you out of a situation that now has inflated every top RFA by 25% in salary how many teams are going help you and not want top prospects, core players or a 1st you now don't have. Also, i have been saying since last offseason that marners value is round 9.5 seeing he would have only one 90+ season so take him and watch the side effects of inflating his contract. Before you say MTL sheeted Aho he was offersheeted at market value hense why teams had no issue.

Well your probably not getting one from MTL seeing they are after Forwards right now and don't need a player on decline. But thanks for the 4 1st for a player worth only 9.5 and good luck signing Brazal for less than 12.5.

Rebuild and Mitch
"Offer sheet annual average (AAV) is calculated by dividing the contract value by the lower of: 1. The contract length, or 2. Five years" that is in the CBA so what you did is literally hurt your cap by 4.8 million dollars for the next 7 years for nothing. Also, Clutterbuck has no value just like Marleau did seeing the length and injury issues. So where you getting the 1st to get him off the books seeing you can't buyout injured players and will want compensation fitting this. Also, why is Laad on LTIR for this season from all accounts he will be ready for training camp and want to keep playing and has a NTC which will make it expensive to move that contract.

My understanding is any contract over 5 is calculated total salary paid divded by 5 years for a team offersheeting if WPG offered this or accepts the offer sheet it would be only 10 million cause they hold gis rights.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mannyhannies</b></div><div>Our cap is not an issue. Nick Leddy can be moved (most likely for a first + prospects) and that clears 5.5 mill. He's been on trade block all summer. Then, Hickey, 2.5 mill AAV, is also on trade block. Isles have an abundance of young defensemen, so we can trade these players. Ladd and maybe Clutterbuck go on LTIR (Ladd is often injured, even if he comes off, chances are he lands back on it).</div></div>
The problem is LTIR is for players injured at the time not for players overpaid. Also, teams may give you less due to that NYI or whoever does this have messed up the cap for everyother team this is why no Top RFA has signed Marner will be what everyother player will get in relation to production/position.

Thats why i honestly think the team in question is banking on the leafs matching the offer. But Dubas is not stupid he can pick up Ferland and Dzingel for less and have one of the best teams in the NHL depth wise and flip the picks at the deadline for a top 4 RHD.

But you got a very good player in kadri that if he can control his emotions in the playoffs can be a great fit for your team. Also, Rosen is an NHL calibre dman that just had bad luck getting injured when he did last night and behind Reilly, Muzzin, Dermott, Sandin on the left for Toronto. But overall is was a very fair trade for both teams.

WorstCase
I agree fully even at 10.5 he is slightly overpaid but if he truly thinks he is as good as McDavid and worthy of that money take the 4 1st and flip them for 2 top 6 forwards with grit. I really hope that the leafs and marner can find common ground but not at 12.5. Saying this my gut is telling me who ever is about to offer that is only doing it to screw the leafs and if the leafs accept the 4 1st that team will be in panic mode seeing they really didn't think this will happen.

Screw Paul Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MichaelFu</b></div><div>Exactly the Leafs will not offer Mitch more than 8.5 million, which Paul is most certainly not going to accept. To be fair, each of Nylander, Tavares and Matthews got paid higher than their average market value:
Nylander: 6.25 million, actual salary: 7 million
Tavares: 10 million, actual salary: 11 million
Matthews: 11 million, actual salary: 12 million
Marner’s market value is around 8.5 million. The other stars got more than their actual worth, so why shouldn’t Marner get more?</div></div>
Well even if your right each got paid only 1 million more than market value which mean he is only a 9.5 million dollar winger at this point.

To think Marner can't play center is ****.
The only real difference between a center and a kane style winger is who takes more faceoffs. But anyone who watched McDavid play knows you don't have to actually win faceoffs to be considered a great center.</div></div>
Actually centers also need better core strength than Wingers that was what i was talking about which McDavid has. I'm not saying Marner is soft or weak but like you saw in the playoffs he can easliy be knocked to the ice. That doesn't mean he is not a great playmaker but he isn't a 1st choice to cover center at the NHL level due to this.

Also you can stop calling Marner a winger. He can play center. He's done it before. And he's not a Kucherov type winger anyway. He's a Kane line winger, who was also one of the highest paid players in the league when he signed his deal.</div></div>
He maybe able to cover at center but he has never been considered to play center even last year when Matthews got injured and why though a talanted playmaker he is to strong enough to play center. He actually in Junior was put on the wing and Tkachuk was the center in London due to it. Also, Nylander had a bad year but his market value was around 6.5- 7 thats where most analysts and scouts had his value. Was it close to that?

Screw Paul Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MichaelFu</b></div><div>The issue is not on the money at this point. Paul Marner feels disrespected by the Leafs organization and simply doesn’t want his son to return next season. He thinks Mitch should be recognized as the Leafs best player and be considered for captaincy. He says the Leafs don’t treat Mitch as one of their star players and don’t appreciate the value he brings to the team. Even if the Leafs pay him 11.5 million, neither sides will be happy. Paul Marner would happily take 10 million in any other market, as long as his son gets to be the number one player.</div></div>
The issue is his son is an RFA so he has no choice but to play for them if the match.

Exactly and the league took Kane's contract as an isolated situation seeing Teows took 2 million less on the premise that it went to Kane. Also, Panarin is going to be closer to 9.5 on a 7 year deal especially seeing he has rumoured to be only interested in a NY market and has only really 1 team bidding from that matket.

Which is where I believe he will sign.
THis is hockey. Players don't have to play second fiddle on the ice. They can be put on their own line. But that also means they are going to want paid.
The shelled out big money for JT last year. Come tell me you would rather pay JT 11 million a year than Marner. And you will see rather easily why he's going to get paid.</div></div>
How about the fact no team in their right mind will make marner the highest paid winger. This is due to that it hurt them in future negotiations. For example if a team like the islanders did Brazel is now worth 13 million due to he is putting up similar numbers and a center. That's just an example of the mess just within the team cap wise. Then every other team will be pissed at you for doing this cause every player comming off RFA are now worth almost 10% more than they are based off this contract. Ask oiler fans how much it helped them offersheeting i read somewheres where 75% of the other teams refused to trade with edmonton in that period unless they overpaid due to compensation they felt they deserved for inflating RFA contracts.
