I believe Czarnik could be a great NHLer. But needs better opportunity and ice time that sitting around on a teams 3rd or 4th line.

What if Calgary threw in a young guy to fill in. Lazar has been killing it in the AHL and looks like he has regained his confidence. No room for him in the top 9 for Calgary now.

Figured, Neal hasn't fit in and Calgary needs cap space to sign Tkachuk next year. Would you trade a cap controlled for 4 more years top 6 player who underperformed one year for a top 6 player set to walk in 5 months?

Dallas will have space for both Seguin and Karlsson once Spezza and Methot are off the books next year. They have 34 million in cap space next summer.

Karlsson
My concern for Ottawa is if they wait eventually the deal will be like Evander Kane or Skinner. Players who should have gotten a lot but teams had to settle for less. Hopefully Ottawa doesn’t end up settling for a first and a second for Karlsson. Eventually Karlsson has to be traded and teams know they can wait out Ottawa until they are forced to simply accept the best available offer.

0% chance Frolík plays in the top 6 next year. Lindholm will be. However, let me be the first to coin the BLT line of Backlund, Lindholm and Tkachuk.

Karlsson with the Oilers
Do you truly believe Karlsson will resign at 9 million per year. After Doughty signed at 11 Karlsson will start at that price.
You’ll have to give up something substantial to trade away Sakera... at the moment he has little trade value.
Skinner is at least 2 years away from being a backup. Needs time in the pros to be more consistent.

Crease Changes
Dell is already 29. By the time this contract is up he will be on the wrong side of 30 to hold a future starter role long term. If Calgary hopes to land a future starter then have to look at players like Saros from Nashville and Korpasalo in Columbus. Young players stuck behind great goalies signed long term (provided Bobrovsky resigns long term)

Dump cap
Shaw at a 600000 pay cut for an extra 2 years is worse than keeping Brouwer at 4.5 for 2 year.
Rather keep Frolik as a great penalty killer on the 3rd line.
Bobby Ryan is still more expensive than keeping Stone on the roster except for an extra 2 years.
All together terrible for Calgary.

I Tried and Failed (probably)
Carolina is not going to take 2 cap dumps for Faulk since Lucic can not be flipped in a terrible for Minnesota deal, no way they want Lucic, and Carolina is a team that doesn’t like to spend to the cap so they are not going to buy out a player and pay him for year to not play for the team. They traded their young D to Calgary so they wouldn’t have to pay his $160000 cap hit for 2 years.

RNH's gone, Talbot makes some saves this season and we're back in the playoffs
Edmonton is not dealing from a position of strength. Every team in the NHL knows Edmonton needs cap space and puck moving D men. Any trade Edmonton makes will be at their own peril. They need to go through free agency and acquire solid players and trade high picks away to ride contracts like Russell, Sekera and Lucic.

Is it bad that Nurse was your best D man last year and you gave him a crap contract? I understand having to be within your cap but to make less than Russell is pretty insulting to the player. If you’re going to bridge contract him it has to be for 2 years or less and he would still get at least 3 million per.

Doesn't leave enough room to resign Tkachuk next year. .... Even when you buy out Brouwer in the offseason.
Need a starting Goalie next year as well so we are going to need cap space.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vanderm</b></div><div>Just thinking out loud with that one. Flames were rumored to be interested in Smith in the past; Senators are rumored to be interested in Stone right now to help sign his brother Mark. OTT remains cap-conscious, so moving similar-sized contracts might be how something like this gets done.
That said, I'm firmly in agreement with you -- I'd much prefer to move Stone for a 3rd round pick (maybe more?) and keep the cap savings. CGY has plenty of players to compete for a 4th line role.</div></div>
With the potential rebuild coming to Ottawa they can afford the cap hit in order to convince Mark to stay there.

Strongly against trading for another 3+ million contract for the 4th line. Stone can be moved for a pick somewhere or a bottom 6 winger who is making 1.5 millionor less.

You couldn't pay the Leafs to take Stone. A right handed deck chair would play better.</div></div>
Understood. Hoffman could play 2nd line RW and Calgary would still have Cap space for them with Stone still on the roster. I'm sure there is a team somewhere that would like to have Stone.

I know he's not reliable but makes an interesting case
On Jeff Skinner...
He is going to be moved...which honestly I DO NOT get...but Carolina wants a new culture, I suppose...while giving up one of the few real proven scorers they have. Montreal WAS interested I am told, but Chucky was in that deal and is now enroute to Arizona....Calgary is leading the charge on Skinner, followed VERY closely by Philly, the Islanders, and Buffalo...

On Mark Hoffman
Won't even copy anything regarding this as it's well known Calgary has been in on Hoffman since the trade deadline only Hoffman's value is currently lower.
