Production is a factor. Impact is a larger factor.
Matthews, Marner, Nylander etc have scored pts in the postseason -- they have not had the impact that M.Tkachuk has had.

Quinn is great- I'm not saying he's not. Great enough to be the 2nd best defenseman in this draft, and for 3rd overall.

Dahlin & Tkachuk are the only options at 1 & 2 IMO
No chance Sandin should move up this far.

Very possible. But Timmins will surely get picked up waivers. He is not exempt.

Anyone that's expecting a difference maker with this signing is delusional. But doesn't mean he can't be an effective NHLer or 7th d-man at this price.
I'd like to think it's a signing that signals the next move coming down the pipe. Need to do something to be cap compliant, and hopefully improve the D.

If it’s “we’ve been approached by X with interest in acquiring you and felt we owed you the opportunity to decide if it’s something you would want as it’s a better chance to win a cup” sounds much different.</div></div>
To the player they can sound the same. Team still has to have an interest after being approached.
Either way-- NYI would rather keep Pulock for 7 years, and the rest of the trade capital -- instead of extending WN @ $9mil+ & 7th Dman.

What happens if they approach Pulock and he says no? Now you have a pissed off D-man for 7 years / 43million

Which of these defensive defenseman should the leafs target
For the right value: any of them could make sense. But I'm not convinced any of them would be worth the cost of what you're giving up for the perceived upgrade.
Murphy at that cap hit isn't great.
Lybushkin is not a long term fix, so why pay more.
Savard is OK, but again, not sure his cap hit is a great fit.
Ferraro any better than Liljegren? He was -31 last year (I realize SJ was awful). Contract stability is his only plus. But I'm not sure Lil would end up being much more on an extension.
Unfortunately TOR spent $4mil on Klingberg who doesn't play defense, and still needs to count on Gio to play meaningful minutes until he's 45.

The only nylander to Isle trade
Not good.
I'd be more inclined to leave JGP where he is and just take the futures. His cap hit could be better spent elsewhere.
That said, I would also be more inclined to let WN play this season out and see what happens. There are other salaries that could be moved that wouldn't result in the same level of talent drop off.

Oh I'm not advocating to move Willy-- even if he's not extended-- I just don't see this return as "nothing". A 19 yr old with a good ceiling, and a top 4 D isn't a bad return if a move needed to be made.
It's just not a trade that I think SEA needs to make-- they can potentially sign him to that deal in 12 months, without giving anything up.

Treliving dreams of long D apparently
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RipNasty</b></div><div>Wright doesn't seem like he's going to be half as good as many thought. Nylander is just not worth moving because as we can see here, it really doesn't make us better. Oleksiuk is a good defenceman but he's not good enough to warrant Nylander and betting on Wright being a star is too risky for a win now team. You can improve the d without making this move.</div></div>
While I agree Wright won't be as good as a top 3 pick (potential #1 overall previously) - he still will be a good NHLer eventually (maybe only a decent 3C), he has a decent ceiling and comes with control. Oleksiak is also no game breaker, but a decent top 4 with term.
This really comes down to contracts IMO-- Nylander is definitely the best player involved in the deal, but is the highest cap hit already, in his UFA year, and due a big raise. I don't think SEA considers this trade, even without the draft picks involved.

Bad trade value. Not a better team. Over the cap. And less cap flexibility for re-signing AM34, WN88 or anyone else.

I would definitely like Samsonov to be back if Treliving can't find an upgrade via trade.</div></div>
For me, I'd rather sign Samsonov & use the cap savings & draft capital to upgrade the lineup elsewhere.
Samsonov is not Helly, but he's good enough to win.
Overall, original idea- but the Miller term isn't ideal, Helly doesn't extend, you've underpaid Graves & Mayfield... and I assume the money to extend AM34 is coming out of WN88, who you'll need to replace.

Don't suspect TOR will be in on another versatile winger @ this price range... Good chance they offer something like this to keep Kerfoot around-- and he'd be more likely to stay, than Sheary would be to come aboard.

Depends on Matthews & Nylander extension values, and a few other roster decisions.... I would guess if he's not traded, he's staying put to keep 24/25 out of it.... But Treliving could see differently.

Oh I agree with you that he's not worth that-- but what's the real difference between your 7950000 & 8500000 ?
Trade partners may not be lining up to spend it on him either
