(MTL/NJD) - Allen for 2025 3rd (NJD)
Good work by Montreal getting a 3rd for a guy they didn’t need and who I wasn’t sure had positive value. They had to retain salary to do it, but that amount of retention is worth about a 4th so it’s still positive, and they still have one retention slot left next year. It may even turn into a 2nd.
New Jersey didn’t get the goalie they wanted, but you have to take what’s available, and he should be better than what they had. With the retention, they can afford to keep him as a backup if they’re able to land a bigger name in the off season.

(MTL/NJD) - Allen for 2025 3rd (NJD)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Huge_Caniac_Abe_Lincoln</b></div><div>Does the second condition mean that if the Devils trade Allen to playoff team the pick still upgrades?</div></div>
That's what it sounds like to me. I suspect the idea was that if he ends up being New Jersey's #1 goalie and they make the playoffs, they'd be happy to upgrade the pick, but Hughes figured if New Jersey trades him and he does that for somebody else, Montreal shouldn't miss out on the upgrade because of something they had no control over.

(CGY/FLA) - Tkachuk for Huberdeau, Weegar, Schwindt
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Barnacle_Ed</b></div><div>This poll and thread are a great reminder that most of us on this site - myself included - have no idea wtf we're talking about.</div></div>
No, it was a good trade for both teams, since Tkachuk was not going to resign with Flames. A good Huberdeau and Weager and afirst.....that's fair
Where the Flames absolutely blew it was resigning Huberdeau and Weager. Huberdeau eight contract starts at age 30, and makes him the second highest paid LWer....gee that's bad
Even Weager's 6.25m contract takes to age 37 isn't going to age well likely.
Trevling should never be a GM due to those signings......so typically the Leafs apparently are going to sign him. Leafs have long list of GMs who never had any appreciation of the cap....Ferguson, Burke, Nonis and Dubas.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>It was a win for everybody given their chosen position.
It's looking bad for the Flames in the short term, but with a coaching change and a new system, it isn't unreasonable that Huberdeau might bounce back.</div></div>
Yes it is unreasonable. Huberdeau is life long 75 point player. A 75 point LWer rates 19th among LWer last season in PPG. To expect him to play to his contract....the second highest paid LWer, is a bad contract by any standard. To think at age 30 when the contract stars he's going to keep a 75 point a year pace....well that would be surprising./

(SJS/VGK) - Hertl, 2025 3rd (SJS), 2027 3rd (SJS) for Edstrom, 2025 1st (VGK)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Andy_Dick</b></div><div>You’re talking like Hertl is ancient. 30 ain’t old.</div></div>
Peak for NHL forwards is 28-29. By 32, they tend to have a serious drop off. Furthermore, he's not that good right now. He's a 60-point centre who isn't good defensively.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Andy_Dick</b></div><div>Your reasoning is basically give nothing up ever for anyone because they can age out.</div></div>
No, my reasoning is this:
1.) He's not living up to his contract now. He's not even living up to the reduced contract Vegas has to pay.
2.) He's 30 already, which is past the peak for an NHL forward and this already bad contract has six more years on it.
3.) You don't give up a 1st and a solid prospect for a bad contract, not even with two 3rds coming back.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FanOfAllTeams</b></div><div>This didn’t age the greatest for leafs fans did it?</div></div>
Where Toronto failed on this trade has nothing to do with Kadri or Kerfoot. Their mistake was overvaluing Barrie. He consistently put up elite offensive numbers in Colorado and the thinking was that it was going to take $8M per year to extend him. Toronto needed a quick fix on defence but had no cap space with which to do it, so getting an $8M defenseman for a year at only $2.75M cap hit seemed like pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The problem was, he wasn’t that good. I don’t know who his partner was in Colorado, but it must have been somebody like Jaccob Slavin who makes whoever he’s playing with better.

Ya, I agree with everything you said here.
As <a href="/users/Random2152" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Random2152</a> said, when you win the cup, you almost always win the trade. This trade is not an exception to that rule because Kadri was a major part of that team and neither of Kerfoot or Barrie have provided anywhere close to the same as Kadri did on the avs.
Back to my original point, depending on exactly what Kerfoot gets, it doesn’t matter that he is still one the leafs while Kadri walked. The avs still won.

(MIN/TOR) - Dewar for Ovchinnikov, 2026 4th (TOR)
Dewar is an NHL player who can slot into their bottom 6 and is an RFA and is gritty.
Dmitry Ovchinnikov is a prospect I liked but wasn't high on their depth list to really make it.
Plus, 4th in 2026 is far out.
Overall I think this is fair deal, I think Leafs get the edge since Dewar is a sure thing while the pick and Ovchinnikov is not

Wow...a 4th seems standard to retain salary (50%) for the rest of the season...so that's a 3rd for Tarasenko. Yeah, with a condition that improves the 4th to a 3rd in 2025, but also make the other 3rd pick the worst in the round.
Unless Tarasenko said I will waive for no one but the Cats, this was down-right awful for the Sens.

(SJS/VGK) - Hertl, 2025 3rd (SJS), 2027 3rd (SJS) for Edstrom, 2025 1st (VGK)
Dare I call this a fair trade? The retention on Hertl stinks for SJS, but its not like Hertl was getting any more valuable. The Sharks get back a prospect who I am a very big fan of and a 1st, while also moving off of a terrible contract. Hertl will be extremely good in Vegas for the next 3 - 4 years, which is perfect for them. That center depth is terrifying. I like it for both sides to be completely honest, but if I had to pick a winner its obviously going to be Vegas

(WSH/CAR) - Kuznetsov for 2025 3rd (CAR)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BCAPP</b></div><div>Can someone who follows Carolina explain the fit to me here? Ignoring all the uniqueness of the situation (I think it's a reasonable gamble for a mid pick for his upside if a team trusts its player leadership group to insulate from any such issues), but it seems an odd fit on the ice
I don't watch Carolina beyond when they play teams I do watch so I may just be missing something, but it seems to me they have a #1c in aho, then 3 top 9 C's already in Staal, Drury, and KK. Plus my understanding is Necas is at least comfortable at c and maybe Jarvis too. So why are they of all teams acquiring him?</div></div>
I can see the logic here for Carolina. They haven’t had a good #2 center since Trocheck left. They actually planned for that by acquiring Kotkaniemi and grooming him to step into that role when the time came, but he’s regressed after a strong start this season, and he’s back on the fourth line. Jack Drury is centering the second line now, but it’s his first full season and he’s still developing. Not ideal for a cup contender. Jordan Staal is more cut out for a third-line role at this stage in his career, and that’s where they want to keep him. Necas and Jarvis seem better suited to the wing.
I think Kuznetsov would be worth taking a chance on if he was a pending UFA. The idea of him setting up Guentzel so Svechnikov can stay with Aho sounds intriguing, but I don’t like the commitment to a full season at almost $4M cap hit with all the expiring contracts Carolina has. That’s money they might have been able to use to extend Skjei, Pesce or Teravainen. A buyout would save $1M of that and push another $1M out to 2025-26, but that’s when Slavin’s next contract would be kicking in. Even at 50% retained he seems more like a liability than an asset, so the draft pick was a gift to Washington. At best this should have been a “future considerations” trade, but losing the third-rounder isn’t going to hurt Carolina unless they want to give somebody an offer sheet this summer.
I’m not saying I expect him to fail. The fact that he realized he needed help and got it, and was humble enough to report to the minors after clearing waivers is a good sign. I’m just commenting on what I feel his trade value should have been today. I really hope he embraces the opportunity to get his life and career back on track. That would be a win for everybody.

This is classic cap friendly overreaction. Kuznetsov could walk in and be an X-factor in the Canes pursuit of a cup. And here everybody will have said they lose the trade. For a measly third. Sometimes there is no sense of reality in this site. It's a fair deal.
