2024 offseason - just need to find 1m in cap room
Yep, this is pretty much what it's going to look like. I think the most likely option is Mittelstadt signs a three year deal around 5.5 per. That way he and Colton will hit UFA at the same time, and by then we will keep one of them and Cal Ritchie will be on his ELC for either 2C or 3C. Sakic did the same thing for MacKinnon and Johnson years ago.
Also, I really want to like Wood, he plays hard every shift, but he has been absolutely anemic offensively and that contract preventing us from resigning Trenin and Duhaime might be a big blemish on our roster.

I mean technically you could just run a 20 man roster and be compliant. That cuts got to come from the middle the most likely candidates in no particular order Manson/Girard, Colton and Georgiev are the guys making $3M+, a lot will have to do with the Mittlestadt contract, but I wouldn’t mind a Colton trade if it meant Trenin and Duhaime were resigned.

You can argue both ways, but you don't give up Byram to not fully commit to a player

I have never thought magiapaine is anything special and he costs more than girard with less term. the trade seems like a loss for colorado. if landy doesn't return i'd rather keep girard and use the 3 mil you've given walker, in a trade for a middle 6 guy. Lehky has shown he can play first line so we could get a better 3C and move colton to wing.

I’m not trying to pay that type of money to anyone on the bottom pair. JJ is probably too old for another contract, but someone fitting that archetype is just fine imo. I think that making long term commitments to a bottom pair guy is just not something the Avs have the luxury of doing anymore.

There is a lot more than jumping into the play that the avs value and they have a lot of guys who already do that a higher level than Joker. He doesn't break up incoming plays to the extent the Avs do, his d-zone ability is bad and gets caught puck watching or just out of position. Ryan Graves played some dang good defense. You gotta start with your basic job duties before you try and take on extracurriculars.

but i don’t think it happens in real life
Maybe at the deadline if we bring someone else in? Maybe

I think that if Colorado is moving on from Girard or Manson, they’re probably looking to save money. Peeke on a bottom pairing is expensive for the role he’s play. I’d rather roll the dice with a guy making $1M

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Richard88</b></div><div>Would CBJ consider retaining a bit, say $500k-750k? That would probably make this viable for Colorado. Or at the very least $225k which is the minimum amount they'd need retained without having to move anyone off their current roster (not counting Francouz on LTIR)</div></div>
That's a hard sell to ask a team to retain for that long. The dollar amount of the retention isn't necessarily important, but teams only get three retention spots, and I could very much see Columbus needing all three of them as soon as next year to dispatch players like Provorov to make space for Mateychuk (who nearly made the team this season) or Kuraly, for example. Or... let's say maybe even Elvis? This coming summer, Columbus has quite a puzzle to figure out between long term deals for players coming off ELCs, prospects forcing their way to the NHL, and hopefully moving into a competitive window. I could see them wanting to keep as much flexibility as they can moving forward, even if Jarmo might not be the GM making those decisions.

I think Columbus would be happy to rid themselves of his contract. As such, I don't think it would cost much at all to get him. Long winded way of saying that a second is way too much.
I also don't think Colorado should be paying their 6D that much.

It's pretty clear the Avs aren't interested in trading for a 6D this year. Between Malinski, Jones & JJ, they'll be fine. I expect to see that rotation start in November.
It would take a season-ending injury to do something like this and there will be better options on the market at the deadline. They'd much rather spend this cap at the TDL on a rental winger or center.

lol I know, not sure why you say that.
My point was to say that CR was also a late 1st round pick... but yes, in the end it always depends on how high a team is on a player, even if the guy was taken in the 4th round.

Colorado have all their 1st round picks as well as a center prospect drafted in the 1st round this year (i.e. Calum Ritchie). That should be enough to make a competitive offer.</div></div>
My bad, yes COL could make an excellent offer, I think OTT would rather pay a 1st/2nd to get rid of cap space then losing Pinto for future assets

Solid team , hopefully Landeskog can come back strong. I am also interested in seeing what Kovalenko can do in the NHL. RJo willbe another year older , might see him switch lines with Ross or a 2C brought in and Ross back to the wing. One key here is Byram staying healthy so they can feel confident moving Girard.

If the Leafs end up signing Nylander, they most likely won't be able to afford Girard even though, he's just making 5M. They could make other concessions upfront like not re-signing Bertuzzi and/or Domi, but I think they would rather save on defense where they could in the following two years (Niemela's ELC would help a lot if he makes the team next year). Treliving in general likes having a big defense, and he is looking to add someone with size to the Leafs blue line. I would also add, that they have Timmins who looks like he could maybe play in the top 4 in terms of offensive puck-moving defensemen.
If/when COL needs to move Girard, I think they could get a young NHL roster player who's at least a bit more proven than Niemela. Maybe even a 3-way trade that sends a guy like Adam Boqvist to COL, with Girard going to a 3rd team.

idk much about Girard but assuming he's a good 2nd pair guy that has some quality defensive agility this is a good deal, mind you I'm a bit lower on Niemila compared to most leaf fans. Not sure Tre would do this since he likes big Defenseman
