In 2 Years
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Riddick19</b></div><div>This would be a team that would struggle to make the playoffs for sure. Or they make it but hard to see them making very far. Giroux's contributions won't be what is was, too much cap space spent on guys like Pinto, and Greig. This is why Ottawa can't trade either of their 1st rounders in 2024. Come deadline time those picks have to be off limits.</div></div>
I 100% agree with you that our first round picks should be off limits.
There's a lesson to be learned with chasing the biggest name on the trade market every year (i.e. Duchene/DeBrincat).
I'm surprised not many people on here or even our own GM understand it.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Riddick19</b></div><div>Toronto's issue is their drafting history. Toronto doesn't hit enough on guys who get drafted outside of the 1st round. Look at Tampa? Killorn, Cirelli, Palat, etc. Toronto hasn't found a player of that caliber in the later rounds in decades. It means you have to spend in UFA on guys like Tavares because the in-house prospects aren't developing. That has been one area Ottawa does well. But we definitely struggle with evaluating goaltenders for sure lol</div></div>
I agree with the overall but Tavares is/was a different caliber player than those guys. He was definitely a 1C in his own right and really the issue with that signing was the flat cap. They did have Kadri who is more of a Cirelli, Palat, and Killorn type, but with having Tavares signed and his suspensions, and the need for a top RD, trading him seemed like the only option. I would say though Kadri being a top 10 pick doesn't really count.
That being said I would highlight their inability to draft and develop top quality defenders, outside of Rielly, and unfortunately he's an OFD rather than the full package. Sandin and Liljegren are the closest thing but only established themselves as NHLers and not top 4 guys yet (while on the Leafs) of course Sandin being stuck behind Rielly saw him getting traded and Liljegren has been sat for more experienced guys. Perhaps, we will see if he manages to become a top 4 D as a member of the Leafs or not this year.

Really doubt Tampa takes on Kampf.... They have to re-sign Stamkos and thanks to the Leafs signing of Matthews, they made that very difficult. If Matthews is worth $13.25M for 4 years? Imagine what Stamkos is going to ask for when he hits the bargaining table?</div></div>
Stamkos will turn 35 during the first season of his next contract, he's not going to be using Matthews as a comparable. If he wants to stay in TB he'll take the 6-7M available. Where talks might break down is term. He will likely want something like Malkin so he can retire as a Bolt but at that AAV he might only be offered a 2-3 year extension like Kopitar.

Do leafs fans understand that when 500 of you come on here simultaneously proposing trades involving the same guys (Liljgren, and I'm shocked you didn't include Robertson) it's kind of a giveaway that they're not good?
Yeah yeah super valuable prospect that's why every one of you is on here trying to dump him and imagining that he'll net a return.

Tampa Bay isn't going to pay their 4th line C $2.4m. They can almost field their entire 4th line for that same cap hit.

Or both Thompson and Cozens at 14.24

When is he going to make it all happen? We've been saying that since he was drafted, he's yet to "make it happen".. Phenomenal in the reg season, sure, but never there after that when it matters.
I'd rather be skeptical about management decisions when this team has some of the best players in the league yet has made it out of the second round once since 2004.
Either I'm skeptical, or I'm on my knees slurping and glazing over anything our management does. "Yes daddy shanny, it's our year!" Rather not..
I guess being skeptical makes me a troll.

If Vegas is desperate
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Riddick19</b></div><div>Pietrangelo is their best defenseman... and eats up the most minutes and Pietrangelo plays with Martinez so he doesn't even play on the top pairing as Theodore plays with McNabb. They have Hague coming up who plays the LD spot. Vegas will need cap space especially if they struggle this season. Defense is the only area they have left to trim from. The key is not really sending any money back Vegas' way unless they play Thomson in their top 6. Vegas gets 1st rounder, 1st round prospect, and a top end goaltending prospect, and roundly $5M in cap space. Do remember right that come after the Season, Shea Weber's contract counts towards the summer salary cap. So it does help in-season it does not however help you form your team in the summer months. So all in all it's actually a nice haul for Vegas to remove their 2nd pairing defenseman get a top defense prospect, goaltending prospect which Vegas doesn't have outside of Thomson. So yeah it's a fairly decent trade off for both teams.</div></div>
Not every team deploys their top 2 defenders on the first line because some teams roll all 3 pairings with big minutes or 2 pairings, for example Tampa had Hedman, Sergachev, and McDonagh all on different lines in the previous 2 or 3 years.
Theodore is definitely their second best dman which is why he averages the second highest minutes on the team after Pieterangelo.

Starting lineups
1) 2nd line is going to be DeBrincat - Stutzle - Giroux because :
- Stutzle is a FULL TIME center since November 24th and going forward. They have seen the transformation once he was moved there. Everybody saw it
- Giroux has been playing wing more the last few years. He still takes a lot of faceooffs but he's a winger now
- DeBrincat played mostly LW
2) 3rd line is going to be Formenton - Pinto - Joseph because :
- Formenton is innocent until proven guilty (law system in Canada)
- Shane Pinto is going to play Center for the Ottawa Senators if healthy. So Joseph moves on the 3rd line RW
- Formenton - Pinto - Joseph are all VASTLY superior to Watson and Hawryluk
3) 4th line is going to be Kelly - Kastelic - Watson because :
- Watson has a regular spot on the team, but not on the 3rd line. 4th line RW it is
- Gambrell will get some games as the 4th line center but it would be surprising to not see Mark Kastelic being the 4th line Center going forward based on what they have both shown last season. Kastelic is tailor made for that role.
4) There's hope that they will finally stop saddling Chabot with Zaitsev. He should play with Zub. They looked extremely dominant when they were paired together
5) I think it will be Chabot-Zub; Sanderson-Hamonic (stop gap until JBD full time next year); Brannstrom-Holden

Agree, he played much better when he was moved to center. All he needs is to work on his faceoffs and he'll be good.
