New buyout window open with TOR and Sammy going to arbitration. I think it's limited (48 hours or so), but they have another window.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Ilya Samsonov (1 Year / $3,550,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MatthewsFan</b></div><div>Why make it harder? Well that’s on Treliving for making this mess and putting TOR so far over the cap that IMO the only realistic way of getting out of this is moving Nylander (weakens the FWD depth) or Brodie (weakens the defensive depth). But that’s a whole different argument.
You are right. There is only a handful of teams that have solidified there goaltending night in night out. I wouldn’t want to commit big money on a long-term deal to any goalie unless they were named Vasilevskiy, Shesterkin, Sorokin, Saros, and Oettinger.
Which leads us to I am not even comfortable at all giving Samsonov a large long term deal next season (4/5x5+) Something he most likely will command especially considering it’s basically him and Hellebuyck as the only realistic FA options next year. The market next year is pretty much garbage.
Treliving had an great opportunity to get a potential top 10 goalie on a 2-3 year at a modest cap hit (yes I consider anything under 5 million for an NHL starter modest) to run in tandem with Woll for the next couple of seasons. That would have been perfect.
Instead we get to hope Woll is that guy and find another cheap reclamation project to pair with him.
I guess I’m just higher on Samsonov than most Leaf fans. I personally don’t see him regressing next year, on the contrary, I believe he will solidify himself as a top 10 goalie and get paid accordingly.
Or maybe I’m full of **** and Samsonov regresses next season as a full-time No. 1 and the Leafs decide to move in a different direction.
Time will tell.
And for a goalie who had a knee injury in November and missed 12 games, he certainly didn’t let it effect his play coming back.
<img class="for_img" src="https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F1uubpeaQAowUI5.jpg" alt="F1uubpeaQAowUI5.jpg"></div></div>
Treliving is responsible for very few contracts on this roster, hard to say this is "his" mess to clean up. He may have jumped the gun on a couple of guys (Klingberg/Domi), but we saw how quickly free agents were scooped up this year. He had areas that needed addressing, and needed to get it done before there were no options left.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MatthewsFan</b></div><div>I’d absolutely would be ok with TOR taking a risk on his potential and looked to have gotten Sammy on a 2-3 year deal at 4-4.5 deal.
What is the alternative now, he replicates next season, something I think we all wish for, and you are now looking at 4-5 years at 5+. Something he’d easily get on the open market.
I don’t know about you but I’m certainly tired of having to guess who our #1 is every second offseason. I do like Woll but I’m not ready to call him a starter yet</div></div>
They're already going to have a hard enough time shedding the 2-3M in cap after Murray is LTIR'ed or traded, why make that problem worse to have Sammy for one more year when you can sign him to what he's looking for with all the cap space in the world next season?
Sammy missed some time this past season with a knee injury as well.
There's maybe a handful of teams in this league that are solidified with their goaltending night in and night out. I'm not ready to call Woll a starter yet either, but now is a great time to get him some more starts and see where you are at. Maybe he seizes the opportunity and you can look for a couple of veteran cheap goaltenders next season rather than 4.5-5M for Sammy.

Hard to see this as a win UNLESS Joe Woll becomes a starter. Otherwise massive L IMO</div></div>
Your 2-3 year deal at a "modest" cap hit would have been in the 4-5M range starting this year. Need to save all the cap space they can this year. Next year and onward it's wide open for making moves.

Got a lot of work to do to get cap compliant, but still plenty of time to do so. I'm sure Treliving has a plan.
Would love to see Woll get 20+ starts this year with Sammy being here only one more year.

Most of these guys will fill out bottom 6 roles if they are signed. Not likely much happens with them until a few trades that are expected to happen go through.

3 way
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>datools</b></div><div>Karlsson can't be moved without both taking back a bad contract and retaining on him. Without retention and a bad deal coming back his worth doesn't exist because no team can take on 11.5 and to add to that he can't be dumped because of his NMC. Your costing on dead cap is correct, but future dead cap does not cost the same because the cap is going up dramatically.
So SJS retains 3.5 per year for 4 with the relative cost going down every year
The bad deal the take back can be flipped so it's not even that back at 3.1 per year for 2 years
All of that is worth Joseph, a 1st, a 2nd and Blomqvist
The flip is the challenge so you add Barabanov take on another dump in Murray (almost no cost this year and only 2 mill next year) and you get Nylander who you can flip at the deadline. Pens sweeten the Toronto pot with a 2nd</div></div>
If Toronto does decide to trade Willy, it can't be in a deal like this. Having to add Murray and ask for retention on a contract coming back takes away from his overall value. They shouldn't be moving him at this point anyway.
Best to just move Murray in a separate deal involving picks.

Chicago Blackhawks signed Connor Bedard (3 Years / $4,450,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jr400</b></div><div>Yes, there is a cap on bonuses and -- you guessed it -- it's $3.5M per season. I guess they're not required to disclose what the criteria are for meeting these bonuses, because you don't hear much about that, but of course I'm curious. As I understand it, there have to be at least 5 separate bonuses to make up the $3.5M, because $1M of it is Schedule A bonuses which are limited to $250k per bonus, so it takes four of those to make $1M. I don't think there are any such restrictions on Schedule B bonuses, which is the other $2.5M, but I'm no expert.
By the way, for those of you who are calling this a bad signing, the only guaranteed money is the $95,000 per year signing bonus, plus $82,500 if they send him to the minors. It's nice to see that the Hawks aren't betting too much on his ability to make the team.
Happy birthday, Connor!</div></div>
I think there is quite a bit of sarcasm in here for anyone saying this is a bad signing. At least that was my intention.

I'm thinking we should hold reservation on him "allowing way more than he scores" until after he steps on the ice. The fancy charts probably dictate he's not great defensively, but he will also have linemates who can chip in. And as of right now, we have 0 clue on who he will be playing with.
