Agree that a 3rd partner may be the solution to make it work. I can't really wrap my head around 3-way trades, it always seems one of the teams is getting fleeced. Considering what Colorado got for Duchene (who was never on Eichel's level) there should be a really solid 3-way deal out there if the Sabres are patient.

Yes i didn't work very hard on the lines, it's a bit shaky. Agreed on Lindholm, I think Eichel-Lindholm-Backlund down the middle is pretty solid. I've seen some trade scenarios for Eichel with Tkachuk and/or Lindholm going back to Buffalo but I think those are the 2 forward pieces the Flames are going to build around going forward. Can't see them being moved.

Hadn't notice that but good point. Unfortunately Sabres ownership has not created a very welcoming spot. Too bad it's a great fan base.

It all has to go
Wouldn't it be awesome if one team could somehow corner the market on 1st rounders in a single year.
I suspect if the real Stan B tried to move all the cup-winning future hall of famers (kane, toews, keith) for draft picks he might be looking for employment in another market

Yup. Kincaid and Weise clearly need more playing time. I smell a top 5 draft pick.
Agreed that any trade that doesn't involve a top proven D-man or more high draft picks/prospects is not worth doing this year

Trading Jeff Petry to Anaheim for Futures
I posted almost the identical trade a few nights ago and got generally trashed for the idea (my version was Petry+Lekhonen for Comtois+1st rounder)
From my point of view, Anaheim still looks like a pretty competitive team on paper, rather than a rebuilding team. They've got a solid top end defense in their mid to late 20's (Manson, Lindholm, Fowler), a great goalie in Gibson, and some very good top 6 forwards (Rakell, Henrique, Silverberg, etc.) as well as an aging but still effective Getzlaf at center.
It seems to me like a trade that generally helps both teams, perhaps with some extra secondary pieces/picks exchanged for balance.
But there are lots of good opinions above - if the centerpiece is a 32-year old defenseman in Petry, maybe there's just too much risk and not enough value for the Ducks.

HABS QUESTION GAME
I think the team needs to accept that they are a middle of the pack team at best - so take a step back, miss the 2020 playoffs, and concentrate on collecting more high-end picks and prospects.
So first Domi goes because he's near-peak value. Danault would be next although i'd prefer to keep him to protect and mentor the young centers over the next 3-4 years. Keep Kotka, Poehling, Suzuki as they are the likely future core.
For the second group, I'd keep Armia he has the most value and they need a bit of size. But if the price is right all 3 can go.
Third group, I'd move both Petry and Tatar at this year's TDL. Maximize the value coming back as they would not be considered pure rentals this year. Maybe Habs could pick up a couple of extra first round picks for 2020. I like them both but their value can only decline from here.

Isles acquire Gaudreau and Kapanen
The Flames trade offer looks like you're targeting the fall 2019 slumping Johnny Gaudreau who's on a 60-point pace for the season. Pretty sure the Flames would be looking for more value considering Johnny's previous two years he averaged 93 points.
They are not going to sell low on their best player. Besides the Flames are really in a win-now type situation, it would be very unwise for them to make a move that involves waiting 2-4 years for Wahlstrom and the other draft pieces to become major contributors.

Flyers get the best player, but Flames win this trade easily I think. Can't believe Philly would give away that many young pieces in a Gaudreau package.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>math731</b></div><div>Well its Poehling, Denisenko, 7th overall (Lapierre or Lundell) and mid first. Still really great for an offer</div></div>
No doubt it's a great offer - there's a lot of value there. But if I had the #1 or #2 overall pick (assume Lafreniere and Byfield) then I would probably not move it for that offer. Just my opinion - cheers

I'll give you an "A" for effort, but it's hard to imagine any of the bottom feeding teams giving up that #1 overall pick to start their rebuild, unless they are getting an established NHL star in return.
One young future super-star (Lafreniere) is more likely to fill the seats than a solid future second line (Poehling plus the other two middle first round picks)

Winning the cup
Two blue chip Habs prospects and a 1st rounder for Monahan? Some may think it's a fair deal, but I watch both the Habs and Flames closely, and Monahan is not worth that many assets. His success is very closely attached to Gaudreau, who is clearly the guy that creates all the high danger chances for that line. When Johnny slumps, Monahan essentially disappears too.
Would love to have Alex Tuch on the Habs though. Poehling plus pick may not be enough there. Depends how other GMs project Ryan P's upside I guess

Please Dont Hate Me
Agreed with comments above that Habs would have to retain some salary on Alzner to make this work. The trade as it stands is biased toward Montreal, as they save $6M in cap per year.
Anaheim gets the best player, but they also need to be rewarded for the negative value of Alzner. Let's face it, if he can't play regularly as an LD in Montreal, then he's really not NHL calibre at this point on any team.

Interesting idea - might be a bit of a steep price for the Leafs but they'd certainly look better heading into the playoffs. If Hall was healthy they could go for a long run.....
What do you think Leafs defensive pairs look like next year if Severson is in the mix on RD? Which of the free agent D-men do they keep?

Habs resolution playoff
I like Vlasic, but 7 years is a very long time unless the Sharks want to retain half the salary on that contract. The Habs would be wise to be patient with their young defenders and save that cap space for a couple years down the road when they will badly need it.
Two very long and expensive contracts for 32+ year old players (Weber and Price) is enough for now.

I know what you're saying, the Coyotes likely don't want to move one of their young defensive building blocks. But Arizona offense last year was 27th in the league, and this year it sits near the bottom again (obviously it's early in the season). The defense and goaltending is solid, but without some offensive depth they're still going to have trouble making the playoffs.
I would think there is a point where the offer is too good to refuse. Maybe the Habs add a better young defensive prospect to sweeten the pot...maybe change it to Drouin and Cale Fleury. Then the coyotes get 2 young building blocks for one...

Crazy unbalanced trade. Please understand that Travis Hamonic is a solid defenseman with real value. And the 2nd + 3rd round picks have real value.
Let's say that Neal and Alzner cancel each other out (not actually true, Neal still has some value, he's just far overpaid). That means you're offering Hudon for Hamonic+2nd+3rd.
Calgary needs cap space, but they are not stupid

Provorov
Funny I was just thinking exactly the same thing, an offer sheet for either Provorov or maybe Werenski. Would rather get the prime years of their careers in a Habs jersey rather than blowing free agent money on UFA guys like Gardiner or Duchene to get their 29 to 36 year old seasons at about the same cap hit.
But ultimately it is likely that Flyers or Blue Jackets match. And that probably closes the door on trade negotiations with those teams for a few years.
A trade for a more reasonably priced guy like Gostisbehere and patience with the prospects (Brook, Romanov, etc.) to see what they become at 22-23 years old is likely the better choice.

2020-21 projection
So this would be the Habs line-up in fall 2020, about 14 months from now? You have 7 starting players who have never played an NHL game yet (as of today) and 3 Europeans that have hardly ever played on NHL size ice.
I love the lineup but it's probably too optimistic for fall 2020. Maybe 2022 or so is more realistic. It would be great if that many of the young prospects make it and have decent NHL careers. A lot depends on the coaching in AHL Laval over the few years

What Did It Cost - Everything
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CN10</b></div><div>So Murray won't be a fit with Weber on the top pair? I see Montreal moving a top 6 forward who the organization was unhappy with to end the year and which will soon be replaceable by the forward prospects coming up for a #2/3D and a young backup goalie. Columbus may need to sweeten the deal with a 2020/2021 mid round pick but I think it seems fair and addresses both team needs.</div></div>
In terms of value Murray for Drouin is not a bad starting point for a trade. Habs would likely be a better team overall if Murray was reasonably healthy for a few years.
The problem is that Drouin acquisition from Tampa was so high profile for Marc Bergevin, that he'd have to be perceived to hit a home run in a Drouin trade at this point (someone like Ghost from the Flyers). Getting Murray would look more like a solid double, not the home run.
For better or worse, Drouin likely gets a longer leash in Montreal, and in a couple of years is finally let go at lower trade value.

What do I need to add Jets fans
Agree with above on the Jets trade, we don't need to give two good pieces (Drouin / Juulsen) for one good piece and a cap dump.
Drouin plus 4th for Ehlers/Kulikov gives the Habs the best player in the trade, and Jets get back a solid top 6 guy plus $4M cap space

I think Trouba costs you more than that, after the monster deal that Erik Karlsson just signed. But if anyone is worth the money it's a 25-year old Trouba. Think $9M plus.
