Montreal is about to rebuild. Much of that cap can be moved. Its not an issue.
Montreal's defense next year: Petry, Savard, Edmundson, Romanov, Clague, Niku, Guhle, Norlinder, Struble, Harris, Outside shot at Mailloux.
Dermott hasnt proven to be anything more than these players, at least not enough to block one of the kids, or to spend Pezzetta and a 4th. It makes no sense.

getting a 3rd pair defenseman through Free Agency is easy, we dont need to trade Pezzetta and a 4th. Everyone seems to be happy keeping their own players. No point in having a pissing match.

Fair enough on the term.
Toffoli's career stats are better, aside from Miller best that he hasn't duplicated. I am not saying Toffoli is much better or anything, just that his value is similar to Miller's

TJ Miller had a breakout season after he was traded, his value is most certainly higher now than what Canucks paid for him.
Toffoli has better career stats, has a better cap hit, better term, and his career season was last year.

The Montreal offer sheet was pathetic. It was far less than the trade value of aho, and that basically meant it was going to be matched instantly, which it was. Waddell said in his free agency presser, "well my summer just got a whole lot easier" because it was frankly awful. Carolina turned around, and used the offer sheet system perfectly to get a player Montreal couldn't afford to match on, but get a player who's only 21 with genuine top-six upside. Carolina showed how to use the offer sheet system, and Montreal's in comparison was just awful.</div></div>
I can agree to all of that, and still not regret not matching. We agree, Montreal's was easy to match and Carolina's was not. I am personally happy we did not, and you are happy we did not. So *internet high five*
I more regret trading the 1st and 2nd for Dvorak, but he started to settle in recently, so maybe that pans out.

He's for sure more of a 2nd and a B level prospect in my opinion. Lehkonen is not recieving a 1st at all. I haven't heard a single report that he were to fetch that price, I've seen numerous mid round pick reports for him. Toffoli is worth a 1st and a B level prospect. The trade gives two guys who will most likely be NHL players and a 2nd. The trade makes perfect sense for a re-tooling as they get prospects who are close to NHL ready with high ceilings (potentially better than Toffoli) and a 2nd rounder.</div></div>
Chiarot is better than Savard, Savard was traded for a 1st and 3rd. Just because most fans don't respect Defensive Defenseman doesn't really matter. Someone will see his Playoff value and pay it. And rumours suggest 3 teams are pushing Montreal to trade him sooner rather than later, so interest is there.
Lehkonen's stats almost across the board are better than Coleman's were when Tampa paid a 1st + Nolan Foote for him. Lehkonen is also RFA, not a rental, just as Coleman had an additional year under contract. Rumours saying teams are also pushing Montreal for this trade to happen sooner rather than later.
Both of these trades have precedent for the value hockey media people keep repeating are being rumoured.
Toffoli is not being traded for anywhere close to a 1st and B level prospect. There is no point in arguing if thats your opinion.

agreed, still doesn't mean Montreal needs to trade him for "fair value". If they see value in him being a leader, and Toffoli at the very least can say nice things to the media, they have no incentive to sell him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Montreal's offer sheet was pathetic. Any owner was going to match it. It was a complete joke, and Montreal rightly got mocked for how bad it was. No owner is going to let their star player walk away.
Carolina's offer sheet was the perfect example of how to use the system. A raised cap hit to force the team to consider the offer, a young player, with great upside to not overpay on the initial deal, a 1 year contract so it doesn't linger. It was a clinic on how to use the offer-sheet system. KK just signed the deal that paid him a lot of money.
I've got no emotion in this, I'm just correcting your incredibly biased views on the events that occurred. KK's on pace for 20+20, best numbers and career highs, Canes fans are very happy with Kotka. I asked if Habs fans regret letting a player go that would lead them in goals. That's all.</div></div>
How are you correcting me? We are saying the exact same thing...
Montreal's offer was fair, so much so, it was "pathetic and any team would match".
Carolina's offer was "perfect", meaning its the exact type of contract that would pry a player out of the market for various reasons.
So you saying you have no emotion, is clearly a lie, your only purpose for this argument seems to be to make Montreal fans say they regret it. Most of us don't, sorry to disappoint, go enjoy your player.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>datmonkey91</b></div><div>You're overvaluing Toffoli by a long shot. MTL would most likely be getting a 1st+ back for him but nothing more. In the trade you're getting essentially three 2nd round picks (Lavoie and Samorukov are most likely worth 2nd round picks). These values added would be worth a 1st+ making sense for MTL to take. They get 3 very solid pieces and two of them will be NHL players who have ceilings that can end up being far better than Toffoli. There is no way a team gives up a bigger package for Toffoli unretained following hand surgery. Nobody is gonna overpay MTL for him nor should they as MTL is the team that is trying to rebuild, nobody is gonna cut them slack and help them out.</div></div>
Sorry, Toffoli is worth more than you think, and won't be traded for fair value anyway. IF you think 3x2nd is what he is worth, best we all just move along.
Rumours have Chiarot (rental) and Lehkonen (RFA) both fetching a 1st. Toffoli is worth far more than either.

and if we are being honest, Montreal likely needs more than a "good offer" to trade him. Maybe its just PR, but he expressed interest in sticking around and mentoring the young players through a rebuild if that's what Montreal is doing. So unless there is an overpay, it makes no sense to trade him right now, could wait a year or two still.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Montreal's offer sheet was pathetic. It wasn't effective in anyway, and was poorly made.
Carolina doubled his value, sure... but on a 1 year deal, the cap hit is negated and it got the player. The offersheet was (minus the number at the end, we will get to that) was a clinic on how to use the offer-sheet system.
As for the number at the end, sure. It had Aho's number constructed into it, it also had KK's number and Aho's draft position. If you're getting 6.1 million, does that make any difference? That doesn't reflect the player, it reflects the team. He's not going to turn down more money because it might offend a different organization.</div></div>
Montreal's offer to Aho was fair, and structured in a way that might stop your cheap owner from handing out a bonus heavy contract. In the end the value was still fair.
Carolina's offer the value was way off, the term made any Match painful, especially since they could just offersheet him again the next year. KK and his Agent were well aware of the numbers associated with his contract, if he choose to allow it, he choose to allow his potential new team to rub salt in the wound of his potential matching team.
I don't even see how this is arguable. If you are happy with KK, congrats. Most Habs fans are happy with letting him go, so whats the issue here? Are you upset we don't regret it?

Habs sent Aho a very fair contract. Many around the league even thought it was a team friendly deal that Canes would happily match.
Canes sent KK 3x his worth, in a 1 year deal with an outrageous qualifying number. To top it off, Aho’s number structured in.
It’s not the same thing, and if Canes wanted him so bad at the draft, they had the No. 2 pick...

Supply and Demand. His worth is what GMs are willing to pay. Fans value offensive players more these days. Which is why powerhouse Toronto couldn’t possibly upgrade with the likes of Chiarot, but also can’t get into the second round.
