In what world is Dallas trading Pavelski for that horrible package?
Let alone with retention.

That's a huge overpay. If I was Dallas, I wouldn't do Hanifin for Stankoven 1 for 1. Maybe if there was an extension in place at a very good cap hit, but Dallas needs to hang onto these guys to take over for the Benn/Seguin/Pavelski's. Especially when they can be difference makers on ELCs while those contracts are still on the books

Hanifin is a fine 2LHD but jesus this is a big overpay. Two of Dallas’s top rookies and a first is crazy.

Zero chance Dallas gives up Stankoven with that package. Hanifin with an extension could get Bourque and a 1st

Did they improve9
As someone who really liked Domi in Dallas, Duchene is a pretty solid upgrade over him in the lineup. With Duchene on the roster, the Stars have one of the deeper top-9s in the NHL:
Robertson-Hintz-Pavelski
Benn-Johnston-Duchene
Marchment-Seguin-Dadonov
I don't think Robertson needs any more help than what is already on the roster. He's got one of the best two way centers in the game and arguably the best net-front presence on the same line as him.
What will make or break the Stars this year is the defense. Can the Stars progress any further than they did last year with essentially the same defense? I'm pessimistic, but we'll see. I'm real curious to see if Nill has a trade on the horizon this offseason to address the blue line or if he's active around the trade deadline.

Dallas doesn’t have the cap now or later to make that move, also doesn’t make sense Johnston has progressed well and should form a very good Center duo with Hintz, dellandrea also broke out somewhat last year and was solid defensively

Nylander trade
As you know there really isn't such a thing as "sign and trade" from a top contending team who has one year left on contract. I would like to see an example where such a team allowed a player to negotiate with another team.
Dallas says no anyway. No cap and Johnson isn't for sale.

Nylander trade
Nah. Dallas would be asinine to move Johnston considering how good he is. His ELC deal is way too valuable for us with us having old geezers like Seguin and Suter with long-term contracts.
If TOR takes Seguin off our hands in this exchange I'd probably consider it. That makes it more realistic for us to actually re-sign Nylander.

Dallas doesn’t have cap space for that and I don’t see them giving up Wyatt. Trading for Nylander after signing Duchene also makes zero sense. Dallas also doesn’t have the cap space to keep him long term. Trades have to work for both sides

Think DAL accepts if they can't add a D from free agency. Ideally would target someone like Graves or Orlov first though.

Whats the trade value
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jfkst1</b></div><div>My understanding from Seravelli is that Grier is looking to clear the cap due to ownership not wanting to spend money on Karlsson during a rebuild. So retaining that much is likely out of the question. Ideally they would take back a bad contract or two to offset the money and maximize the return. I'd say in this case of 50% retention at least the next two 1st rounder picks and a 2nd. I think at that cap hit for four more years Karlsson is almost certainly good value.</div></div>
Was Seravalli saying that was a rumor he heard, or was it just speculation? To be honest, it sounds like the kind of "insider" thing that is easy to just throw out there. Hasso is a multi-billionaire and a hockey guy, I have a hard time thinking he would force Grier into a worse trade when a good one would mean accelerating the rebuild and getting the team back to making money faster. Its just not the best way to capitalize on that asset from either a money or hockey perspective.
My pure speculation is that Grier is willing to retain quite a bit more than he's ever said publicly because its better to keep a card like that close to your chest. You want the other team to ask what your price is for more retention.

Dallas isn't trading a 1st Round Pick for a $5M, middle-6 winger. They don't have the cap space for it and Garland isn't worth the price here.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ecupirate07</b></div><div>If you make it an even 50% retain, Canes would do a 2nd and decent prospect.</div></div>
If he continues to be a PPG player, you don't get him for any less than a 1st, even as a rental. A (presumably) late 2nd and non-top prospect doesn't get the job done for Dallas.
Not saying NYR accepts this deal either, but a 2nd and a decent prospect is too low for Dallas to sell Pavelski on.

Kivi, Olo, Studenic, Karlstrom, Damiani, Back, Blumel… all guys that would likely be just fine on the fourth line. Some different skills, but all solid players. All have ELC cap hits. Exactly why we don’t need Glendening at 1.5 million. Back has Faksa replacement written all over him. You don’t have cap space for guys like Faksa and Glendening when your 3LW is making 9.5 million
