Leafs Tax
Tough market to move any player. Most teams are up against the cap and the ones that are not are rebuilding which means they are looking for first and second round picks.
At the moment it is a buyers market for players.

2nd in West
Was hoping the Oilers could move Nurse and free up the cap space. Sooner or later the injury bug will hit their top two players and when that happens, freefall.
Cliffton and or Holl would have been great additions. Low cost Belzile and Richard formerly of Montreal would have help the 4th line.
This year doubt they make the final 4.

Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina should make the final 4 if they are healthy. With or without any further trades although I think they will make a few trade deadline moves. I think the best front office in the league.

Most exciting team to be a GM
Everyone is guessing Matthews will go to a team in the south west USA. If Bedard goes to Arizona, San Jose or Anahiem, think Matthews would go there as well. Arizona offers Matthews more privacy. Toronto is the fish bowl of the NHL.
Arizona will be the team to watch over the next couple of years. Hopefully Detroit, San Jose and a few others will get into the playoffs soon.

FLAME OUT
Cap goes up by a million (maybe more, but players will just ask more too).
2023-24 Flames have 18 on the roster and 3.8 M to "play with", 2024-25 Toffoli, Lindholm, Backland, Dube, Tanev, Zadorov, Hanifin and Gilbert UFA's. Dube and Ruzicka with the RFA hammer.
Calgary should have let Huberdeau walk. They should have passed on Kadri, even though he is my favorite player.
Toffoli and Lindholm in the 7-8 M range.
Huberdeau at 5.5 M. He will have to finish top 10 in points next year to justify his money.
Keep Huberdeau or Toffoli and Lindholm? Easy choice but Calgary will make the wrong choice.
What did Calgary have to give up to dump Monahan?
Edmonton made the same mistake with signing Nurse.
Instead of signing Huberdeau the flames should have sold the farm and been in the running for Bedard. Much too late but they have a shot at next year's number 1.
Go Habs Go.
Go Sens Go.

A LEAFS WHAT IF WAG
Tavares points in 2017-18 was worth 7.8 M.
BECAUSE THE LEAFS OVER PAID TAVARES LESS THAN OTHER TEAMS WERE GOING TO OVER PAY HIM DOES NOT JUSTIFY OVER PAYING TAVARES.
TAVARES WAS OVER PAID 3.3 M IN 2018-19, OVER PAID 4.5 M IN 2019-20, OVER PAID 3.5 M IN 2020-21, OVER PAID 4.4 M IN 2021-22 AND HE IS OVER PAID 3.3 M THIS YEAR.
HAD THE LEAFS OFFERED TAVARES 7 M, THEY HAD ENOUGH TO SIGN HYMAN. IF TAVARES DIDN'T TAKE THE MONEY, NO WORRIES, THE LEAFS WOULD HAVE A BETTER TEAM TODAY.

Thread:
A LEAFS WHAT IF WAG
Leafs couldnt afford Hyman because they paid 11 M for a player who was only at 8 M in scoring. Dubas overpaid Tavares. Tavares "wanted" to come to the Leafs.
Over paying Tavares also lead to Matthews and Marner getting a bit more than they should have.
Simply bad cap management.

HABS Next year
No one is giving a first and a second for a rental in Dubois. Habs can wait a year and not have to give up anything.
Entire NHL knows Dubois will be a Hab in 2024-25.

Believe Kent is going to offer the best deal possible for Dubois and if Winnipeg rejects the Habs wait a year.
Dubois is worth more BUT he wants to play in Montreal, advantage Kent.

Thread:
Would you trade the future for the Stanley Cup
Players are not paid lump sum at the end of the year. 3 million cap with a late season trade is going to be under half mill cost.
Closer the trade deadline gets, SJS will take the best offer, at the moment no one knows what the "best offer is".
5 minutes before the trade deadline if SJS does not have what they want, they will trade for what they can get.
Arizona gets a 3rd and a 4th for trading 2 players they could very well re-sgin, or 1 if only Bjudstad. They also get the bonus for having Rielly. Arizona would love a team filled with as many Kassin and Rielly as they can get next year so they can bulk up on good prospects.
You want to win by losing.
SJS have another year or two more dumping contracts.

Leaf fans do not want Holl here is the answer
I like Holl. Of course I also liked Ceci. They both played the toughest minutes where any mistake is costly, in the Leaf zone. They were both top pair PK and top pair defensive zone starts.
Addd in they are D all the way. You are not going to get any scoring from them. Just solid D minutes.
Muzzin played far worse last year than Holl and the media didn't say a word. He also coughed up the puck on the series winning goal. Not a peep. It is was Holl???
Holl and Ceci are both good D. Every D, every forward will cough up the puck at the worst times.

Yes Chicago doesn't want any of them which makes it a perfect fit. Worse Chicago is to the end of the year the better their chances of picking Bedard.

Oilers need Timo more
NHL Teams can add 2 firsts, 1 second and a third pick and re-coup that should they later trade Timo or he is offer sheeted.
Multiple teams are bidding so one would assume to win the Timo sweepstakes you are going to have to up the offer.
If Boston or Toronto could guarantee a final appearance then any cost would be worth it.
McD has 3 more years left on his contract after this season. Most likely none of the picks in the next 4 years will be a key player to help the Oilers.
Win now or never.
Leafs organization appears to be happy with being the 4th, 5th or 6th place team during the regular season.
Boston is going all out and in some ways I hope Timo joins them.

The Oilers have a "window" to the Cup for the next three years. Yup, they could chose not to upgrade this year and hope for the next two.
But if they want Timo, they are going to have to pay.

Take off Eh
No one knows the package Montreal would give the Jets for Dubois. The only thing for certain is that on July 1, 2024 Dubois will no longer be a Jet.
Rumor is Montreal is being offered good deals for Anderson by other teams but Montreal is not trading him because he will be used in the trade for Dubois.
Every year there are few high quality players available as UFA's. The Jets could very well pass on Timo and in the 2024-25 season rely on their younger players.
Bidding war for Timo. No offer is too excessive if you want him.
