Niklas Hjalmarsson should win the Norris
When Erik Karlsson and Pk Subban were winning Norris trophies I often said they should add an award. Best offensive defenseman. While those 2 were great offensively, their D zone coverage leaves more than a little to be desired.
The one knock on Hjalmarsson in Chicago was the fact he played his off side. He'd be top 10 in the league in give away because he was always trying to clear the zone with a backhand.
His IKEA commercial in 2010 is still one of my favorite hockey commercials. For you out of towners, Google it.

Marner vs DeBrincat
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MikeyThePensFan</b></div><div>I don’t disagree. They overlooked him for his size but he reminds me of a Theoren Fleury type of player. Quick, skilled and plays in your face. All the GMs overlooked Cole Caufield too.</div></div>
Caufield went 15th overall. So it's hard to say they all overlooked him when he went in the upper half of the first round. But he's a more extreme example of Debrincat. Debrincat's goal and assist totals were split almost 50/50 for his junior career. Caufield has a wicked shot. But it remains to be seen if he can actually make plays in the NHL. Would have thought his assist totals be greater playing with the linemates he had.

Marner vs DeBrincat
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>yikes</b></div><div>DeBrincat is at a .78 ppg
Marner is above a .92? (Can’t remember)
For now no. But this new contract is a steal and if he puts up 40 this year this kid really changes the field. He’s could be scary</div></div>
.929 for Marner. If you take Debrincat's year last year (76p in 82 games) and you make him a ppg player which isn't far fetched, that brings his PPG up to .85 and would be the same age as Marner.
Or if you removed Marners totals from last year, he's at .81ppg. close to Debrincat at .78. the PK thing probably puts mitch ahead. But if you factor contract... probably lean Debrincat.

See, that depends if you're factoring in contract. If you want that factored in, Debrincat for sure. Without the contract... Marner. But it's close.

Hawks now that Bupz is back
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>Perlini has some great tools and tons of upside, but in my opinion his hockey IQ is severely lacking. At times he's flying around between the blue lines while the puck is being fought for behind our own net...or the Hawks turn over the puck in the offensive zone and it's clear the opposing team has gained control and transitioning while Perlini is skating the opposite direction. His anticipation and hockey IQ is just brutal. Maybe he hasn't had enough time with the system the Hawks are running or maybe his IQ is lacking....hard to say but reminds me a lot of DuClair. I hope he pulls it together though.</div></div>
Great minds think alike. He reminds me of Duclair. Skates fast, decent shot, zero hockey sense. He seemed to have a bunch of breakaway style goal. Off of memory it was him floating by the blue line when the puck bounced the zone and he outskated the D to score. Happened more than a few times. It's nice when it happens, but if that's all you offer....NEXT

Please for the love of my sanity, remove Caggiula from the top line. Put Saad there. Put Dach there. Put Kubalik there. Hell, put Nylander there. Caggiula is a good bottom 6 player that when you have NOBODY else can play a top 6 role.
He's not productive enough to be on a top line. He showed that in Edmonton and he showed that in Chicago. And don't try that chemistry and creates space argument. It's hogwash. Go get Ryan Reaves or Pat Maroon if you want to create space.

Hawks now that Bupz is back
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MisstheWhalers</b></div><div>Seriously like wtf took so long for Perlini to sign for that amount, what was the holdup to sign for
one year at $874'125K??</div></div>
The Hawks sent Perlini a qualifying offer preventing him from becoming a UFA. Perlini thought he was worth more than his QO. By all reasonable comps he is. The problem is the Hawks roster structure after the DEhaan, Maatta trades and Lehner signings didn't leave the salary space he wanted or probably deserved. This left Perlini with 3 options. An offer sheet that never came his way. Hope the Hawks would bid against themselves and offer him more than the offer sheet. Or sign the offer sheet.
The Hawks played hardball because they had to and the only contract Perlini saw was the offer sheet which was 105% of his 832k base salary.

Michael ferland is hit UFA 2 years younger than Kreider will. Similar production but Kreider's is slightly better. Ferland got 4@3.5
Dzingel also hit UFA 2 years younger. Took 2@3.375. almost identical offensive production to Kreider.
6.5 per is just insane for a 29 year old. That's a contract you give to a 22 year old and hope he grows into it. Then you throw in 2 nearly NHL ready prospects that were ppg AHL players. One scored 13 goals in 47 NHL games. AND a 1st? Not a chance. Maybe 1 prospect and a 2nd

I'd rather have Murphy. Johns is 27. Just missed a whole damn season. And has only played 150 NHL games to the tune of 28 points. Murphy has played nearly 400 games and is a year younger. Murphy has averaged .19 PPG. Johns .18. one player you can rely on. The other has a Steve Montador career path written all over him. I'm shocked he continues to chase the dream. Will he still have the physicality? That was what got him NHL ice. Last year he couldn't even make it through training camp. Wayyyyyyyy to risky.

Wasn't talking about the trade itself. But the contract. Leafs gave him what he wanted, no negotiation at all. Gave him the dollars and years. Brought him right to UFA status. He's not McDavid, and even McDavid got 8 years.

Remember that Quenneville would have to be exposed to waivers whereas Sikura is still exempt.
Puljujarvi needs a better center than Kampf. Kampf IMO is a good 4th line player.
