Crazy..... or is it?
Draisaitl is amazing and the trades seems fair, but I don't think it helps the team, overall.
If you at the track record for teams that sign 2 Elite players (forwards) to massive caps, it generally hinders the team moving forward. Think Pitt after their first Cup when Gino and Sid resigned, or what's happening with Chinrigt now. Those two players are phenomenal, but they end up playing with whomever is affordable, and the bottom 6 are an afterthought. I think in the long run, the Leafs are better off upgrading on Bozak @3c in the <4m range, and spreading the cap around; the idea being, raise the average talent for the entire team, instead of relying on 2 guys to carry the team.

Does this make sense?
It would be amazing for the Leafs to get Simmonds.
He would bring size, skill, and toughness to the front lines that we are lacking.
However the price would be too high, and I doubt if they'd want a rental (JVR) for him.
I like the creativity though.

Maximizing Value - Do The Leafs Match Up With the Metro?
Honestly, going all-in would be more in line with previous leaf/leaf-fan thinking at the deadline.
Leafs are a good team but not in the best.
The best scenario would be the leafs to move JVR, Bozak and Komarov at the TDL.
Leafs should move these guys because they won't be able to resign them, and can get a decent return.

I agree with you. I just think the Leafs have a greater need for a RHD.

Well, in terms of depth for LD we have Reilly, Gardiner, Dermot, Hainsey (who is playing RD for Reilly), Marincin, Rosen, Borgman, and Valiyev. With the exception of Reilly and Gardiner, all of these guys are between 5-7th D-men.
The reference to the press box (Moore, Martin, etc) was more about the "Leadership" comment. Leaf fans have been sold on the "leadership" angle for a few players who have in the past couple of years either spent their time buried in the minors or sitting in the box, eating cap space. It's not that I'm knocking "Leadership", but how much more "leadership" does a team need?

The leafs have enough depth and leadership sitting in the press box.

The leafs have no use for this trade, as it does nothing for them.
Leafs have too many LHD, already.

An argument could be made that Andersen is more valuable to the Leafs. But, Mathews is probably the one.

I don't know if this deal really helps the leafs.
Honka for Carrick and Leivo seems to make more sense, +/- picks to balance.

TDL Modest Buy/Sell Pt3: Re-signing the Core
I honestly don't think our D is that bad, but we are weak on the right side.
I think a move can be made to bring in a RHD that is roughly equivalent to Gardiner in talent, but better defensively.
I don't think that player needs to be a rental (expiring contract), and Gardiner's cap hit is team friendly which could make it easier for a team that's getting close to the cap.
Gardiner and a 1st (2019?) could land a really good RHD.
I think our D-core would look pretty decent going into 2018-19, like this :
Reilly *RHD
Dermott Zaitsev
Hainsey Liljegren

TDL Modest Buy/Sell Pt3: Re-signing the Core
Not a bad 3 years (with decent trades), but I don't see the value in trading for McDonagh (to not resign him) and dropping Gardiner to the 3rd pairing.
I feel that Dermott can take over for Gardiner on the second pairing going into next year.
I think the package dealt for McDonagh (or some combination) along with Gardiner, can land us a decent RHD with decent cap hit to play with Reilly; and, we should resign set RHD.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DarylthePony</b></div><div>Don't understand the need for Anisimov, seems like extra cap for a player who isn't really an upgrade over Kadri.</div></div>
So CHI wants us to take a Cap Dump and pay for it? I don't see the incentive either.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ajw0066</b></div><div>Go check out the year 3 post everything works out.</div></div>
Ya maybe the leafs can fit his contract under the Cap, but that money could be better spent.

OEL trade?
To all Habs fans,
Weber has been an elite RHD and may be for another few years. However, the reason you want to trade him is the same reason no one wants to trade for him. If his contract expired in a year or two, everyone would offer you the moon for him. Yet, you wouldn't have got him for just Subban (who is an awesome offensive D) in the first place if his contract was expiring in 2 years. Unfortunately, Webber is too good to trade, and too expensive to keep.
This was the same problem the leafs had, albiet Phaneuf is not as good and his contract not as bad. Toronto ate as many contracts as possible and got a 2nd and a C prospect. I still can't believe Ottawa made the trade.
Your best bet with Weber (even though I still think he is elite) is to pray for a lockout so you can get the cap free buyout. (I honestly think this was MTLs plan all along)

I totally agree with you, but your deal isn't any better for TML, which was the point I was trying to make. I would keep MM for his remaining term, but the real problem, that TML fans don't want to admit, is that we have an LTIR cap hit in Horton for the next 2 years.

That trade is a "non, guy" for Detroit. Green is worth more than a 6th D, 2nd, and 4th.

Honestly Toronto doesn't need another 6-7th D we already have 4 or 5 that fit that bill. Toronto need a 3rd C or 2-3rd RHD. The other trades seem fair though.

Values?
I totally agree with you about where our team is at. You can add Uncle Leo, and Mat Martin to the list of we can get something. With all those players moving out, if we can bring back an RHD of Gardiner calibre with better defence, and a speedy 2way 3rd C (that are entering prime) that would be ideal. I would use this playoff run as a yardstick for what we have, going into next year.

TML will give you Martin for Chimera straight up with no retension, and even toss in a 7th to grease the deal.
I really like Martin, but we have a depth problem that has sadly caused him to fall out of the line up. $2.5M to sit in the press box is not fair to either MM or the leafs.

Actually the Reimer trade was the second trade with SJS that year, and looked like this:
TML
Ben Smith
Alex Stalock
2018 4th
SJS
James Reimer
Jeremy Morin
The 1st trade:
TML
2017 2nd (Andersen Trade)
2018 2nd
Raffi Torres
SJS
Roman Polak
Nick Spaling
Most of us pair the two trades together to make sense of it. I left it out to minimize my novel length posts...

JD Greenway is doing nothing in College, right now.
Rychel is a gritty player with some upside but not enough to climb out of the AHL, with our depth on the wing.
I think more or less his value to us is actually on the Marlies where he can protect the rookies while still chipping in some points.
I included them as they are still in the Leafs system.
I agree that Andersen and Kapanen alone seem worth the trade, and the 2nd is a bonus.
I honestly justify the $1.2M for Kessel as just part of Andersen's contract.

If you include the other trade partners involved with the "Kessel Trade" return from Pitt, the return looks like this (still with the Leafs):
IN
2018 2nd (SJS)
Andersen
Kapanen
Rychel
JD Greenway
Out
2016 2nd
Kessel (1,200,000)
Biggs
Erixon
Not bad...

I think your trades are closer than most people offer, but maybe the value is a little off.
I agree that any trade for Doughty would start with Reilly+1st, but if possible I'd rather part with Gardiner.
If I'm LA I think I ask for Reilly, Brown, Kapanen, and a 1st. And, maybe Toronto counters with Gardiner, Brown, Soshnikov, Johnsson, a 1st and 2nd.
The Arizona trade seems fair, but I don't see the Leafs trading for Hjalmarsson. I don't think they need him.

New lines please
My apologies, I thought you meant going into next season with Bozak on the 4th line.
I actually agree with keeping our "rentals", unless we can use them to bring in roster players we can use now, and going forward.
I also think that we are still in a rebuild. The standings don't really reflect where our team is truly at, and I feel everyone has the wool pulled over their eyes... again.
TML should hold onto their higher draft picks this year, especially since this appears to be a deeper draft.
