The whole point of the 3 way deal from SJ's perspective is to have the third team retain additional salary on Karlsson.
You're not getting Pesce at 50% retention for 2 crappy prospects, a cap dump, and a 1st round pick... If you want to retain an additional $2-3M on Karlsson's contract in addition to what SJ is retaining then maybe you'll get Pesce for that package, but there is no reason for Edmonton to be gifted a valuable piece for nothing.

$5M contracts for 2 years cost more than a 3rd round pick to move. If you want to call the deal Granlund + 14th overall for Gregor and 36th overall then maybe that is more appropriate value.
That or take the SJ picks out altogether and SJ just sends Barabanov for Granlund + 14th overall.

Sort of did though. If you use the trade value chart in the Athletic, the GSVA that SJ gave up is 4.1 in draft picks while Pittsburgh gave up 5.1 + Granlund. This trade is basically saying that it would only cost an early-ish 3rd round pick to dump Granlund's money for the next 2 years (which is too low).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GolfBall</b></div><div>Respectfully I disagree. Karlsson is a great player who wants out and has a boat anchor contract. He played great last year and not so great with health issues prior. At full cost it's a huge gamble no one will take. If Murray stays healthy it's a 1 year hit for a good goalie. If he doesn't it's LTIR money. Liljegren has good potential. Niemela and Hirvonen are no cost sweeteners who might work out. This trade gives the Sharks flexibility.</div></div>
Add the Boston 1st rounder and the 2024 1st rounder and maybe you're onto something. Without any draft picks, this trade is just laughably bad.
Think about how much 1 year of Marleau at ~$6.5M cost Toronto to move 3-4 years ago to Carolina. That was a 1st round pick to move 1 year of that amount of money. Now think about asking a team to eat almost that amount of money plus take a cap dump for basically a 2nd or 3rd pair tweener in Liljegren and some throw in scraps. Doesn't even begin to talk about the value of the actual Norris winner you're acquiring in the process as well. Simply on the principle of money involved this is a terrible trade for SJ.

$9M a year in dead cap through 2026-27 and being devoid of all retention slots for future moves the next 2 seasons is likely a non-starter. Having to retain on Karlsson is fine. Retaining $3M on Couture is unnecessary with the cap increasing next year. Whoever would trade for him simply just needs to make it work this year with sending a short-term bad contract and then they're on their own for 2024-25 when the cap starts to bounce back.

The athletic mock draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>buffbry9108</b></div><div>Pens trade 31 for barabanov not 17</div></div>
Would agree as a Sharks fan. Or if it is 17th overall coming for him, Pittsburgh gets to toss in a 1 year cap dump type of guy to SJ or SJ tosses in Gregor, Labanc, or the CAR 3rd rounder (not sure how cap would work on Labanc) to justify the move up in picks. Or PIT could just cut out the middle man and trade Granlund and 14th overall to SJ for Barabanov since that is effectively the way that the deal played out.
Would love to get another 1st rounder ahead of the NJD pick at 26th overall. Combine that with the 36th overall pick and you have lots of ammunition to move up and down the draft board for whatever guy(s) you want. Can rebuild a prospect pool quickly that way.

Why would the Sharks do this? A pair of 26 year olds that are bottom 6 guys at best for possibly one of the 5 best bargain contract in the league in Barabanov.

Sharks give up the only legit player in the whole deal and are somehow the team moving back in the draft.
Value to move from 4 to 5 is at minimum 5 + 31. So your deal is saying that the value of a top 6 center that has produced at a 68 points per 82 rate for the last 5 years (4 of those being on one of the worst teams in the NHL) is 37th overall and a LHD (which SJ already has literally 11 signed to contracts next year).
If somehow SJ got the same package but were the team moving up to 3rd overall, that deal would make sense. But in this scenario, SJ is giving up 2 of the 3 best assets and getting minimal back in return.

Plus 3 cap dumps as well. Sharks taking on $15 million in basically dead money between retention, Ceci, Foegele, and Yamamoto for this deal and only getting 2 future late 1st rounders, a 24 year old mediocre minor league LD (have about 8 of those competing for the NHL roster already next year), and a B/C prospect that had a meh first year as a pro.

Couture won't waive for WPG most likely. Seems content riding it out in SJ.
Labanc makes sense though. No spot in SJ and a change of scenery is best for all parties. Seems that WPG fans are out on Pionk so would do Labanc for Pionk probably. WPG maybe tosses a 3rd round sweetener for the $1.2M in extra cap hit and additional year of cap hit on Pionk versus Labanc.

2023-24 NEW YORK ISLANDERS
You haven't even gotten close to paying for the Karlsson retention of $4.6M for 4 years with that return. Then add in the value as a player for Karlsson at $6.9M and you're missing about 3 1st round pick value assets in this return. Cap retention doesn't come cheap nor does the Norris Trophy winner on what would then be a bargain contract. Easy no.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blacktown</b></div><div>I think Grier keeps our picks this year particularly our 1st in a deep draft.</div></div>
"Deep Draft" is a commonly misunderstood deal amongst fans. Deep means that there might be 10-12 guys that would go top 5 in most drafts rather than pick #25 is wildly more valuable in this draft than another draft.
I'd take this package and run if I were Grier. Difference between 25 and 36 when it comes to getting top end talent is basically meaningless. This way, you get 3 kicks at the can of finding a good player in that range rather than 1. Comparing the 2015 Draft (deepest of recent history) with other drafts, the difference in points per game per 1st round drafted skater outside of the top 5 is something like 0.49 from 2015 to 0.47 on average from other years.

Not when said player isn't 800k against the cap and already been relegated to having his minutes cut by 15% compared to prior seasons. $2.4M isn't a bargain. QO alone is going to have him in the $2.7M range. For a guy that is being deployed by his current team as its 6th D-Man, that is a lot of money. Wiesblatt and the Carolina 3rd final offer.

Given I think Barabanov is worth a 2nd and mid-level prospect, I think this trade is very reasonable for Fabbro. Far and away the most reasonable compared to your compatriots in the Nashville fanbase that think Fabbro is worth 35th overall and then some at 16 mins a night and a potential non-tender candidate.

16 minute a night D-Men making $2.4M are not worth more than what Brenden Dillon was traded for as an established top 4 D-Man multiple times. Especially not when the SJ 2nd rounder is going to be something like 35th overall.
