2023-24 NEW YORK ISLANDERS
You haven't even gotten close to paying for the Karlsson retention of $4.6M for 4 years with that return. Then add in the value as a player for Karlsson at $6.9M and you're missing about 3 1st round pick value assets in this return. Cap retention doesn't come cheap nor does the Norris Trophy winner on what would then be a bargain contract. Easy no.

Price is a 1st for Ferraro. Grier turned down a better package than this at the TDL.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Blacktown</b></div><div>I think Grier keeps our picks this year particularly our 1st in a deep draft.</div></div>
"Deep Draft" is a commonly misunderstood deal amongst fans. Deep means that there might be 10-12 guys that would go top 5 in most drafts rather than pick #25 is wildly more valuable in this draft than another draft.
I'd take this package and run if I were Grier. Difference between 25 and 36 when it comes to getting top end talent is basically meaningless. This way, you get 3 kicks at the can of finding a good player in that range rather than 1. Comparing the 2015 Draft (deepest of recent history) with other drafts, the difference in points per game per 1st round drafted skater outside of the top 5 is something like 0.49 from 2015 to 0.47 on average from other years.

Not when said player isn't 800k against the cap and already been relegated to having his minutes cut by 15% compared to prior seasons. $2.4M isn't a bargain. QO alone is going to have him in the $2.7M range. For a guy that is being deployed by his current team as its 6th D-Man, that is a lot of money. Wiesblatt and the Carolina 3rd final offer.

Given I think Barabanov is worth a 2nd and mid-level prospect, I think this trade is very reasonable for Fabbro. Far and away the most reasonable compared to your compatriots in the Nashville fanbase that think Fabbro is worth 35th overall and then some at 16 mins a night and a potential non-tender candidate.

16 minute a night D-Men making $2.4M are not worth more than what Brenden Dillon was traded for as an established top 4 D-Man multiple times. Especially not when the SJ 2nd rounder is going to be something like 35th overall.

Not retaining salary for 4 years. Will take some less than stellar contracts in the short-term like Ceci and Barrie that roll off the books and can be flipped for assets later, but not eating more than $3 million for 4+ years without 2 more 1st round picks (and even then $3M is a lot of retention).

Meier comparable
PPG power forward that is made for the NHL playoffs is a better player and higher value than a 5'8 Debrincat that has never whiffed a non-fake bubble NHL playoff game. You're also not factoring in that deadline prices are always higher than offseason prices because teams are desperate to make the move that puts them over the top with an already good and contending roster.
Also, Debrincat got a 7th overall pick compared to the pick SJS gets being outside the top 20. Don't care what anyone says about depth of draft, a top 7 pick in a weaker draft is always going to be greater than a pick in the 22-26 range in a stronger draft. Meier is going to get the Sharks a 1st, top prospect, and B prospect or they'll hold onto him. It's pretty simple. There are enough suitors that someone will step up and pay the price, especially with SJ retaining 50% this year.

Just send a 4th or 5th rounder instead. Desmith doesn't do anything for SJ at his age. Also, if Pittsburgh is trying to make a run it is better to keep a 3rd goalie to not be playing Louis Domingue in a playoff series.

Not sure why fans think that the Sharks are going to trade a 26 year old bonafide top end top line scorer and not get assets that allow them to begin their rebuild ASAP. If you want Meier, you better have a 2023 1st round pick included in the package.

No way the Sharks are retaining $4M for the next 3 years AND giving up a 2nd round pick and gaining a whopping ~15 spots in the draft.

I think that deal makes a lot of sense for the Sharks and Pens. Labanc will undoubtedly put up 50-60 points skating next to Crosby/Malkin and Petterson would finally give the Sharks a LD partner for Karlsson (which is needed along with health if he's ever going to fully turn it around and be close-ish to the D-Man he once was). He could also bump down and play Ferraro with EK65, but like Petterson's reach better given Karlsson is also sort of short.

Being dramatic putting Viel as 3rd liner and benching Balcers? Also, Perron might be the last guy in all of the NHL to ever sign a deal with the Sharks. Dude hates San Jose after the Jumbo incident and the various playoff series of the past. Lastly, where is Ferraro?

Haha, yeah that Sharks trade is not remotely close. Kerfoot is overpaid and gets destroyed from an underlying numbers standpoint. I can assure that even if Kahkonen and Kerfoot were close (they're not) that San Jose is not adding a pick. If anything, Toronto should be adding at least a 3rd round pick to this package to get anywhere close to appropriate value.

Doesn't look like SJ is buying out MEV at this point (unfortunately). Hopefully there's another way to get out from his money via trade, but I think it is doubtful. Montreal is about the only place I could see him going waiving his NMC to go, but even at 50% retention I don't know if anyone would be willing to take on 4 years of Vlasic at $3.5 million.

Looking at this Team After the Draft
Not paying Strome $6 million. Gregor doesn’t sniff $2 million and same for Dahlen’s money. Agree with the Ferraro bridge deal assuming it expires as RFA rather than UFA. Still think they find a way to move Burns and think they’ll bring in a UFA D-Man like Zadorov given the stated intention to get bigger on the back end.

A way to acquire eklund and 11 OA
Sharks are only moving Karlsson and Burns to try and gut it all and rebuild (not going to happen but if it was this would be how it manifests). So the #1 thing a rebuilding team does is trade their top prospect along with their 1st round pick? Even with all of the known unrealistic mess, the logic still doesn't compute at all.
