Regardless we could do so much better for one of the best power forwards in the game on a fair contract.</div></div>
Frank has nailed the offseason thus far though so I am hesitant to question him. Kurz and Sheng both also said they'd heard rumblings as well. That said, I agree that I think they find a way to make amends and keep him around. Given DW's stated need for guys that play a men's game, Kane is one of those on the roster that does so. Barring a fair value or better deal, think Kane is back next year. It won't be for a cap dump and even worse problem child like this deal laid out assuredly.

Burns is a defensive blackhole who is under contract until he turns 40 and he already has injury issues. You're then just spending 4 mil on dead cap. If I want to see my team spend 4 mil on dead cap, I'd look at Jordan Staal's deal.</div></div>
You showed yourself to have literally no clue when you said "injury issues" regarding Burns. Guy has not missed a single game in 7 straight seasons. What injury does he have? Just finished top 5 in the league in TOI this year at over 26 minutes a night while playing only 44% offensive zone starts (i.e. shutdown pairing) and being a positive possession player and generating more chances than he allowed by a decent margin.
Like I said, you showed that you have no clue in the first post and doubled down on it with the second. This is lunacy at its finest.

2 bad contracts, a buyout candidate with a looming legal battle for a 1st line forward under 30 and the Sharks are the ones adding a 2nd here? That's ridiculously bad.

You don't actively watch hockey if you actually think that is true.
Sharks don't do this deal because Burns at $4 million retained plus Foegele's salary doesn't really do much of anything to alleviate the cap pressure while it also makes the team worse in the immediate future.

Sensible Adjustments for the Season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>areax91</b></div><div>Labanc has struggled in the top 6 for us and he could use a change in scenery. Also, our locker room is in desperate need of fixing, and adding a character player like Tanev could help turn things around there. Even with his less-than-ideal contract, he became a fan-favorite with Pens and Jets fans, and his contributions to the defense and grinding are both skills that are critical for survival in the Pacific Division.</div></div>
You can add a character piece without moving your best trade asset for another bad long-term contract.

Trades are heavily slanted against SJ. That Tanev trade is terrible and doesn't make much sense and don't think Ottawa gets a 3rd for Tierney, let alone with our 4C as well.

Like Broberg as a prospect, but doesn't really fill a need for SJ organizationally nor in the immediate future. If/when Labanc gets dealt, it is going to be for a 3C most likely.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KakkoForMauriceRichardAward</b></div><div>Still better than keeping his entire cap hit for 4 more seasons or trading assets to dump him to Seattle</div></div>
It's not though. He's still likely to be a top 4 D-Man for the duration of the deal and is currently still a top pairing guy (not at his prior Norris level but also not 30+ other guys that can eat 25-26 mins a night at the level he does). Retaining that much for that many years to get basically no value is bad. Given the clearly stated intentions of getting back in the playoffs this year, much better off keeping him and letting him continue to eat quality minutes than to give him away for basically nothing while getting a fraction of the cap space back.

Labanc and Garland are the same player. Garland just is played in a way more sheltered role in Arizona than Labanc is used in SJ this year (which is where Garland's breakout in scoring derived). Give Labanc the 63% OZ starts that Garland got in AZ compared to the 45% he got in SJ and they're basically going to be identical from a point generation standpoint. Value for both is probably well short though.

SJ trade

Drouin is 0.63 pt/gp, right he needs a move, he cannot deal with MTL pressure. Allen is better than all SJ goaltender with a cap friendly contract, Harris last season is 1pt/gp in NCAA, reliable def. Poehling's season in AHL was very good, he'll become a good 3rd line center maybe 2nd line, he needs more time.
MTL is on WIN mode right now, SJ is on REBUILT mode, that's the reason why MTL overpaid for Meier.</div></div>
Sure, let's throw Meier's 20 and 21 year old seasons where he was playing in a bottom 6 role in there to try and skew the numbers out of context. Since Meier has become entrenched in his role in the league as a top 6 player (past 3 seasons), he is scoring at .72 PPG while Drouin is scoring at .60. Additionally, Meier has scored almost as many points as Drouin has played games the past 3 seasons (146 to 152) speaking to how injury prone Drouin is. So no, the comparisons are nowhere near fair.
And no, SJ is not in rebuild mode and there is not a publication from anyone with knowledge of the team saying as such. Whether they should or should not be is debatable, but the organization is very firmly on the record saying they're not rebuilding. And if they were, then why are you putting guys like Allen and Drouin in the deal anyway as they'd be looking for futures?

While I would be interested in Varly, I don't see a young 2nd line winger as the asking price for a 33 year old goalie. Like Papishark said, it would have to center around Sorokin, which obviously NYI aren't going to do. A Labanc trade with NYI would most likely have to return a center, so something around Labanc and Pageau would be where a deal would start as DW is targeting a 3C to play more defensive zone minutes to lessen the burden on Couture. Aka what Pageau has been doing basically his entire career.

Value probably fair, but none of these pieces do much for SJ in terms of what they already have in the organization (which is a dearth of bottom 6 wingers). They're not moving him for futures and want more of a hockey deal and not sure anyone in this deal makes the NHL roster next season nor do they address any of their major needs at center or goaltending.

For the millionth time around here, the QO means literally nothing in terms of trade value. View Meier as having 2 years to UFA rather than 2 years to RFA. He's either going to be locked up long-term before the QO is required or he is going to be a UFA.

Yeah, this package is about what it would take to compensate someone to take those contracts off NYI's hands without getting anything back (especially not a retained on 1st line winger).

Trade up
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>papishark</b></div><div>I think id much rather move back than take Edvinsson but thats the beauty of the draft!</div></div>
Just worry that Wallstedt is gone by the time that Ottawa picks which makes the whole thing null and void. For a team that hasn't drafted this high since 2003, you have to assure yourselves that you get an impactful prospect that you really like.
The cost to move down from 7 to 11 would cost more than this package. To move from 20 to 18 in 2013, DW gave up 20th overall and 58th overall. That was just to move up 2 spots much later in the 1st round. By most thought processes and more modern draft pick value charts, it would probably take another late 2nd or early 3rd rounder to make up the difference from 7 to 11 (and likely even more given this draft seems to have a very set top 10 and a bigger than normal fall off of uncertainty after that).

Sharks fans watched Demelo for years. He is a #4/5 on most teams in the league (he was 4th among Jets D-Men in ice time). He is nowhere near Brent Burns. Burns' step back is more attributed to his usage than being bad. He went from seeing 60% offensive zone starts to about 45% over the past two years. That is the biggest reason for the decrease in points. He was a positive possession player this year playing shutdown minutes and playing 26 minutes a night. There are only a handful of those guys in the league that can carry that kind of load and do it effectively.

Not to mention his plethora of legal issues right now I'm not sure it's worth the gamble. You've tied up almost 53 million in your top-6 forwards, seems a bit short-sighted.
You're going to have a hard time getting any offence out of that bottom 6. And that D core is looking scary if Muzzin misses any games (which he does every year). Goaltending scares me too.</div></div>
It's a bankruptcy proceeding, not some deep dark criminal case. Let's not over exaggerate this by calling it a "plethora of legal issues".
That said, Sharks would probably want something more than just Rielly and it would be a bigger deal as not sure 1 year of Rielly (who would likely not re-sign unless SJ traded Burns to free up money) is worth prime Kane on a fair value deal that expires before it turns into an albatross (will be 33 at expiry).

Bellows would replace Kane's spot on the expansion list, but the value is too low for me.
Taking Ladd alone costs a 1st+Bellows. So that makes the rest of the deal Kane for a 2nd and Holmstrom which is too low given that 2nd is basically going to be a 3rd rounder.

Synopsis of the Sharks left side being horrible would be better stated as "I didn't watch any of their games this year, but since they weren't 1st round picks and I haven't heard of them since I didn't watch any games they must be awful."
Left side of the defense is probably the biggest organizational strength right now with two top 4 guys in Ferraro and Knyzhov that played well in the top 4 this year and Vlasic who played well once relegated to 3rd pair duty. Behind them, you have Pasichnuk, Kniazev, and Hattaka who all profile to be ready in the next year or two.

Don't even know where to begin. The first two trades are bad for SJ. For the 3rd deal, why would they bring in the tandem of Kuznetsov and Samsonov to wreak havoc in the dressing room like they have in Washington this season? Even more so, in what world is Samsonov getting $4 million a year after this past year with the off ice stuff in addition to his horrible performance on the ice??
