Rookie Faceoff so Far and Lines for Final Game
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>How did Pulli look? Will he see NHL anytime soon?</div></div>
tbh I haven’t loved how Pulli’s looked. Haven’t seen anyone else critique him and he hasn’t been bad necessarily, just hasn’t been good imo. Hasn’t been using his size and physicality defensively and would like him to hold on to the puck more to make plays. He’ll definitely start in the AHL I think but could definitely play NHL games at some point this year. haven’t ever scouted really so could be totally off.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GeneralLandro</b></div><div>How is Musty looking?</div></div>
Musty’s been fine imo, not great but definitely not bad. Expectations were really high for him after development camp and the Sharks’ prospect scrimmage when he got a hat trick, but he wasn’t great at wjc summer showcase and decent in both games against LA and Vegas. He’s had some high-energy forechecking sequences and good processing, should tear up the OHL this year.

Ideas
don't think either team would do the SJ trade tbh
Kahkonen was terrible last year, but SJ needs to keep him to have 2 NHL caliber-goalies and he can rebound. We would also want to keep our last retention slot.
Not sure why Rangers would want to give up a couple mid-round picks for a goalie who was basically league worst last year.

Backlund and Duclair
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pavelski_tip_in</b></div><div>I think you're right about using the retention spot strategically to facilitate trades. But, I would rather watch Labanc and Hoffman walk as UFAs because their current AAVs make them untradable if it means we can get as close to a 1st rounder for either Duclair or Barabanov with retention. I think one high draft pick in the 20s-30s is worth more than a few mid-range picks that we could get by retaining on Labanc or Hoffman and trading Duclair/Barabanov at their actual cap hit.</div></div>
yeah I agree, if retention is the difference between a 2nd and a 1st then yeah, better to do that than just get a 4th or something for Labanc/Hoffman w/ retention. I would just doubt that 1.5 in retention would make up a big difference like that.

With Waivers In Mind
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AStovetop</b></div><div>I know the team as a whole isn't great but that's a REALLY good 4th line. Zero high end players, but the forward group is really deep.
On D I can't see Gawanke beating out all those guys, especially considering he's waiver exempt and the Cuda need RD bad. Vlasic won't be scratched, at least not on opening night, but I could see a situation where the D-core is a revolving door of new guys getting scratched every night</div></div>
yeah forward group as a whole isn't even that bad, a guy like Peterson I wouldn't want on the 4th line but don't know who to swap him with (maybe Zetterlund).
don't think Gawanke is waivers exempt.
I know Vlasic is better than these guys and realistically won't be scratched, but I would. All of the starting 6 I have can either be traded soon for value or be a part of the Sharks future, neither of which apply to Vlasic.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>goodfella</b></div><div>That'll be a low 30s pick. I think this might be fair.</div></div>
fair, but have to use last retention spot wisely. Might make more sense on a guy like Labanc or Hoffman because they have more aav, so more retention is possible.

value-wise it's fair, but I think SJ would need an overpay to use their last retention slot at this point

Question About Plus/Minus
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>A_Habs_fan</b></div><div>Well I’d argue that’s because stats aren’t good for judging prospects, their development curve isn’t close to finished, to judge a prospect, you’d want to watch how they play ( or read/listen someone else talk about how they play )</div></div>
yeah definitely agree, I also read about these guys as much as possible. Hard to find film on these guys in Europe, though.

yeah definitely agree, main reason for the question is for a lot of prospects it's hard to find many stats and +/- is one of the ones I can find

Yes, I agree that +/- isn't the best stat (maybe even a bad one), but is it a decent stat if looking at it relative to other players on the same team? Especially the same position?

My Ideal Lines for Rookie Faceoff
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pavelski_tip_in</b></div><div>Wiesblatt stock is low right now, but he showed some flashes at the end of the AHL season.
Hopefully we see some improvement out of him because he still can reach the NHL in a bottom 6 energy role.</div></div>
yeah still a good chance he can make it as a high-energy bottom 6 winger I think. a lot of guys (Bordeleau, Gushchin, Robins, Coe, Wiesblatt, Cardwell) that are on similar timelines and can hopefully make it somewhere in the middle of an nhl lineup.

only interesting Sharks hockey thing to follow now are the prospects in Europe lol.
J20 also very hard to follow with Landen.
Rimashevsky played one shift in the KHL today for the whole game.

Being injured hurt his development a lot but he’s still very young.</div></div>
him becoming a top-4 d is a bit too optimistic imo but obviously hope you're right. just really hard to judge, with playing in prep school and being injured basically the whole year. will be a huge year for him, nice to see that Lund is at Northeastern as well.

hard to say w/ Fisher for SJ, played prep school and then USHL last year, but was injured almost the whole season, didn't even register a point
would be Alex Young for me for SJ. No one really outside of SJ knows him. averaged just under a ppg as a Junior and transferred to Arizona State for senior year. Could be a really solid, well-rounded bottom 6 guy

Why Do You Need to "Build Thru the Draft"
I know this is probably a pretty dumb question, but I don't get why you need to build through the draft. Why couldn't a team be good by being mostly comprised of just ufa signings? Yes, the top guys are often very expensive in free agency, but if you just built a good depth team could you not just build a team thru free agency primarily and maybe a trade here and there?

I said yes.
almost league min for a guy who's still relatively young and has elite size that he uses to be physical and play well defensively. not much potential but can still improve and play higher in the lineup if he's helping balance a pair with a smaller, offensive-defenseman.

Addison is significantly better than Burroughs and a 4th isn't close to making up the difference. Yeah Burroughs is probably better defensively, but Addison is way better offensively and a lot younger.

I don't think the number of teams that
- Would look to add before training camp
- Have a spot open on RD
- Have cap room
- Would add a 33 year old
Is very small, and even then they could just choose another target like Peeke instead.</div></div>
we would trade Rutta at next TDL. If we retain on Myers, then we can't retain on another big contract like Hoffman/Labanc

yeah I wasn't really arguing the .75 ppg part but yeah, seems unlikely but possible.
