Colorado Avalanche signed Hunter Miska (1 Year / $700,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rebecca</b></div><div>Miska has been a solid tandem option in net for the Colorado Eagles. He’s been particularly strong of late and, arguably, is the best goaltender in the AHL on an AHL (only) contract.
We’re gonna have to find another goalie to wear that crown (and hint: there aren’t many goalies in the AHL not signed to NHL contracts). This is a market efficiency the Avs are taking advantage of, picking up one of the best goalies in the North America not signed to an NHL contract.
As it stood, the Avs were 3 goalies deep, for all intents and purposes. This signing gives the Avs a 4th strong option they hope they never have to use.</div></div>
Avs had Goalie injuries in the early Winter this season and now have 4 goalies with an nhl win this year. Miska under contract now gives Colorado 5. Not sure who you forgot but the Avs have Grubauer, Francouz, Warner, Bibeau, and now Miska under contract. In a perfect world (as an Avs fan) only the first 2 will see nhl ice time the rest of the season.

I think you forget there are plenty of long and horrible contracts that will be AHL buried. This year is headlined by Backes making $6 million to not even play. There will be a more expensive AHLer next year.

Jordan Staal was named Captain before this season, I can't see management or coaching staff undoing that.

This season will be at a $728k cap hit, as the last year of his ELC. The extension starts for the 20-21 season and runs through 26-27.

Not usually a fan of term over 4. But he will still be only 29 at the end of the contract.

(TOR/COL) - Kadri, Rosén 2020 3rd for Kerfoot, Barrie 2020 6th
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>drewjenks</b></div><div><strong>How good is Barrie's offense? </strong>
The guy has 116 points in his last 146 games ... that's 65 points per 82 games.
Is he just passing it up to MacKinnon / Rantanen and getting secondary assists ... or does he have a high-end / noticeable offensive game?</div></div>
He has a great offensive instinct and a quick release wrister. His offensive totals are honest with a fair amount of PPPs. He tends to get caught flat-footed if he is the last defender back. I don't understand why he is a Defenseman, he could be a 80 pt/year playmaking Wing on a 2nd line.

(TOR/COL) - Kadri, Rosén 2020 3rd for Kerfoot, Barrie 2020 6th
I know I'm in the minority of Avs fan with this opinion, but Barrie is not a reliable Defenseman. He would be a reliable LW, but his Defensive game is part of the reason the Avs had their historically bad season in 2016-2017. If he is not paired with a shutdown D partner, he's going to cause Dubas and Leafs fans headaches. A lot of them.

Even with the Cole injury to start the year, the Avs have way too many LHD looking to break into the nhl lineup. I think MacDonald is a better player than Toninato but I don't see why the Avs would do this based on the positions</div></div>
Barberio won't be back. I seriously wonder if Sakic isn't trying to create serious competition so whoever ends up in the nhl roster come October will have earned it.

Thread:
(ARI/COL) - Connauton and 2020 3rd round pick for Söderberg
Ian Cole and Erik Johnson are both penalty killing dman for the Avs who may miss the beginning of the season after off season surgery. Johnson for a shoulder and Cole for both hips. Connauton can play the PK. He does not need to be a workhorse, and for his contract and status, he won't be expected to be. The Avs leveraged what they had for some blue line insurance.
As for Soderberg, he will be able to get back to 3C position that seems more natural to him behind Stepan and Dvorak and the Avs can open up ice time for Compher and Jost down the middle. Also, as much as much as I like Big Ole Carl on and off the ice, he will turn 34 in the first month of the season, so maybe a role step back will be a good thing for his productivity in a contract year.
There really is no loser here. Both teams and players got what they needed.

Colorado Avalanche signed Philipp Grubauer (3 Years / $3,333,333 AAV)
If he can beat out Varlamov (seems likely to me) this becomes a steal of a deal while Varlamov becomes a huge albatross of a contract that the Avs only have to deal with for a season.

(WSH / COL) - 2018 2nd round pick for Grubauer, Orpik
This is only a fair deal if the Caps can use Orpik's cap space to resign Carlson. If Carlson walks, then the Avs get a veteran gritty Defender and their future Goalie for the #47 pick.
