I’ve been an absolute junkie for this site for years. Read a lot of things that got on my nerves. Like ridiculous armchair GM rosters with awful trades and terrible signings, where someone way under or over paid someone etc... But I was always too lazy to create an account or bother saying anything. Well I just created the account. For this lol. I’m really shocked to see everyone bashing Colorado and Sakic here. I keep reading about this retained salary over and over and over, yet no one has bothered to point out that Barrie is in the last year of his contract or the fact that the Avs swapped a 6th for a 3rd. I’m Canadian. I know how big hockey is here, but let’s all relax and look at this objectively for a second. Barrie has exceptional puck moving skills, but isn’t that great defensively at all. No offence to Barrie, I love the guy. For the most part, under normal circumstances, trading Barrie for a solid second line C, is a fair deal. However Kadri is signed for a few more years at a very reasonable salary, while Barrie is in the final year of his contract and will ask much more next year. At this point in the trade, I’d say Avs are ahead. So they decide to add another player each in the deal with Kerfoot being a little better to even things out. Then the leafs pay for the salary retention by drastically upgrading Colorado’s draft pick. I’m an Avs fan and I voted fair deal. You people need to stop leaving out key aspects to this trade and putting down an excellent GM in Joe Sakic. Furthermore from an Avs perspective, all they were missing was a talented second line C to contend for a cup. That was the biggest priority this offseason. They didn’t need Barrie, nor could they protect him in the upcoming expansion draft. Too many D to protect and not enough forwards. Avs traded what they had too much of, for what the needed most. This was a fair and perfectly logical trade by the Avs. What will leafs fans be saying if Barrie leaves at the end of the year, or if someone else of equal importance has to leave at the end of the year to make room for the Barrie’s salary increase? But no let’s all leave that stuff out and laugh at the Avs. Ridiculous.
