He’s already arguably our best dman, he’s just undersized and we already have a bunch of dman like that. If you’ve never watched him play I understand why you’d say this, but all Heinola needs to do is put on a bit of weight and get a bit stronger and he should be our number 1 in a year. He’s that good. He’s not 2-3 years from top pairing level, he’s pretty much there.</div></div>
Thanks- I’ve watched him play for Jets, Lukko, and WJC. I’m very familiar with his play, but I don’t think his ceiling will approximate best top 5 dmen in the league, like Hamilton.
To me, his play is somewhere between Enstrom and Heiskanen, but who knows when he may get to that point. I think that he’ll turn into a very good player, but would prefer taking the best chance Jets have ever had at a Cup now.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tsyls</b></div><div>Bro when I saw this and his comment I burst out laughing. Even with an extension at a reasonable dollar amount this is an overpayment. They’re essentially replacing Hamilton with a guy who in 1 year could be a top pairing dman, a guy who has #3 dman potential that plays both ends of the ice and a 1st. I get the thinking that this would expedite the Jets dcore now, and not in 2-3 years when Heinola and samberg will have their most impactful years, but it’s not worth the price at all.</div></div>
The key here is that Heinola “could be” a top dman in 2-3 years. No guarantees in hockey, the guy could have a spinal injury tomorrow and never play again.
Hamilton is the #1D Jets need now.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>arafay</b></div><div>There’s absolutely no way the jets move either of Samberg or heinola, forget both. That and a first? That’s a woeful overpayment for a rental. Even stone only got brannstrom and a 2nd and he came with an extension. Heinola arguably has the same value as brannstrom did then and there’s no way the jets move heinola. He’s a future top pairing guy if he isn’t already (damn I wish the jets gave him more games)
And you add another top prospect and a first? Massive overpayment for Hamilton, especially unsigned</div></div>
If he comes with a contract I could see it. Weak draft, this may be the best opportunity we have to win a cup for years, and we’re trading back 4m of cap. It might be too rich, but Hamilton would completely overhaul our blue line for the next 5 years. In essence, we wish that Heinola would someday become what Hamilton is now... so the cost of Samberg and a 1st is just expediting the process that may never come true.

Jets would actually be one of the few teams that could afford Hamilton in the offseason.</div></div>
Making the deal in season would be tricky, but is doable. And yes, a Hamilton extension for 8-8.5M for 7 years is definitely doable with Stastny and Perreault freeing up 10M, offset by raises to Copp and Lowry. I would guess one of Appleton/Harkins get scooped in XD, and would be replaced by a near league minimum guy. Perfetti might be ready for 3LW duties next season.

To your first point: yup agreed it’s unlikely he walks, but maybe the $ aren’t there in a flat cap world for him to score a huge contract. I think Jets would have some wiggle room to overpay and lock him for 7 years.
Agreed, Pionk could bite us in the ass. Hopefully being a RHD would allow us to offload his contract for cheap at the end if doesn’t look great.

Laine has been my favourite player to watch since he broke into the league because any given night he could score a hat trick. That entertainment value of going to live games was a huge draw for me, so the trade stings a bit. But I do think this gives us the opportunity to be a #1 RHD away (Hamilton would do the trick in my eyes) from being a serious cup contender.

I’d go up to 8.25m. Purposely left tons of cash to extend Barkov (add 3-4M on current contract) + other marginal increases.

They need defense more than offense cause they can bring back Hoffman for a few less goals for less money</div></div>
I get the point, but comparing a 30 year old with one season above 30 goals to a 22 year old who has never scored less than a 30g/season pace is ridiculous. He has potential to score 50g/season for the next decade on Barkov’s wing.

That’s fair. If we swapped Heinola for Samberg and added our 1st, does that get us anywhere close? Part of my thought process was that getting Laine to FLA likely ensures Barkov re-signs long term.

If it means getting a top RHD in FA, plus we’re giving them a top 6 player who just won’t get a chance in Winnipeg, why not? They also have Glass coming up.

Why wouldn't we be? Gives us a veteran 2nd line winger who consistently puts up 50 points to play with either Connor or Ehlers, for a couple million more per season than fair value. 3 years left, and you can expose him in the XD. May seem pricy, but the rest of the big boys are locked up long-term anyways.

Really? For a cost-controlled player on a long-term deal scoring 31, 34, and 38 (in a shortened season) his first three years? Copp is good insurance for Nolan Patrick at 3C, but can play wing if Patrick is good to go.

With Scheifele turning 28 next year I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think of a succession plan. By the time Rossi is able to be an impact player, Scheif would be 31 and could move to wing similar to Stamkos.

Feel however you may about FA coming to Winnipeg. If it’s the difference between potentially winning again before your career ends AND making the money you deserve, I don’t think Krug signs in either Boston or Detroit. I could totally be wrong, however. Is a magic bean 3rd really not worth Roslovic? I think he has offensive skill, but is better off as a winger and doesn’t fit our lineup. Salary dump is for the remainder of the year and actual cash is 4M vs the 4.5M cap.

Yes, FLA would get (1) a younger, consistent 35-40 goal scorer on a very friendly long term deal, (2) a high-IQ young dman with top pairing upside, (3) a middle-6 big-bodied power forward, and (4) a 1st round pick. This only happens if FLA plans to tear it down, as has been rumored, and assuming they believe Barkov would walk when he reaches UFA.
