Best goalie in franchise history
Ah so I see we're underrating Hertl but overrating Mr. Rask.
Rask is the Brodeur of this generation, constantly being insulated by a defense-first team philosophy.
Rask's Vezina season came on the heels of finishing 16th in the league in Goals Saved Above expected. I.e. he was barely a top-15 goaltender on the season and somehow stole the Vezina. You don't seem to have a very good comprehension of anything outside of boxscore stats to be honest.

Fair, I'm just assuming it helps them get rid of Zucker's contract for next season and gives them one final shot at a Cup in 2022. Pavelski is otherworldly at his age

You might be right. I was going off of Brenden Dillon's trade value (two 2nd round picks) from SJ to Washington, that's essentially a bottom-tier 1st round pick which Barron was.

I'm not sure how much value (if any) Milano has left. Has never been productive at any point in his NHL career and has hit injury issues as of late. I think he becomes waiver fodder to make space for a younger LW. Deslauriers is a pure role player, max I can see him fetching is a 4th.

Not sure tbh, Garland is already a borderline elite two-way winger and Vancouver has him locked up at a great cap hit over his prime years

(MTL/ARI) - 2022 conditional 1st round pick and 2024 2nd round pick for Dvorak
Overpayment by Montreal. Dvorak is a useful middle-6 C who is locked up at a reasonable cap hit for the next couple of seasons, but has ultimately peaked. Arizona was able to turn a 2nd round reach of a draft choice (Dvorak was ranked in the 70s amongst NA skaters) into what looks like a top-15 1st round pick in a deep draft and another 2nd round pick in 2 years. I wouldn't count on his offensive upside too much as a 2nd line C, to me he is more of a long-term replacement for Danault on the 3rd line. Habs have to hope Poehling develops into something special

Agree that Seattle will choose Gourde. The value for getting rid of Johnson is about right, but I don't see Nashville being the team. They already have 2 overpriced, underperforming C's they want to get rid of (Duchene, Johansen), and I doubt they will add a 3rd to the list.

Burns has 2 more years than Keith and at a $2.5M higher cap hit. He has zero trade value without retention.

Huge Sharks fan here. I think shedding Burns works out very well for both sides. It allows Karlsson to really take hold of the top position on the right side and allows room for an injection of youth on the blueline. Retention is worth it IMO.

Suzuki is our second best prospect and a first rounder from 2 years ago. There's no reason for Canes to make that deal when they can go to FA and find somebody to play top 4 minutes without giving up assets.</div></div>
That's the thing, the drop-off in quality beyond Hamilton in UFA is enormous. The 2nd tier of defensemen available consists of Martinez (likely staying in Vegas), Barrie, Goligoski, Savard, Larsson, Oleksiak.
There isn't really anyone available who can play a similar all-around role like Hamilton did, and Brett Pesce can't contribute much to offense.

I don't think they want to lose two of their top four defenseman (Hamilton, Skjei) in the same off-season and it's never a guarantee that you can get replacements via FA. He was playing 24 minutes a night in the playoffs, whereas Bean was only playing around 14. It makes more sense to protect Bean, but I wonder if they end up protecting Skjei in order to keep the core of their defense intact,</div></div>
This makes a lot of sense as well. Who do you think gets chosen by Seattle in that case?

Can't compare ROR to Jones at all. ROR had a massive signing bonus that the Pegulas did not want to pay, which forced Buffalo's hand and gave other teams leverage.
Jones is very highly-regarded in the league and with an extension in place, the Hawks would most definitely be willing to pay a decently high price for him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sporkknife</b></div><div>OK, but I base my opinion on what teams do, not how I as a fan think I know what is going on behind closed doors, which you seem to be doing.
Can you name an example? I've provided one to you (Arvidsson). Maybe Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson? Which was widely panned at the time and is still looked upon questionably? I think you could point to Barclay Goodrow too. I would agree Goodrow was a severely underrated two way play driver. Maybe you're right with the value. But it's a rare occurrence. Not to mention Goodrow's insane low cap hit and the term on his deal.
I stand by my assessment that offense is valued much more than defense in the trade market (Mantha, Toffoli, Duchene, Palmieri, etc). Most NHL guys need to be good both ways these days. Being able to put the puck in the net is a rarer talent. Personally though, I'd take Blake Coleman over Taylor Hall every day of the week, for example, as per your description of a team that drives play.
And what's with the off base comment? I essentially agree with you, but point out that the logic isn't usually applied in practice.</div></div>
Arvidsson is a completely different situation: 28, one year left on his contract, 2 seasons of steep decline following a multitude of injuries, and Nashville wanted to protect 8 skaters instead of 7-3.
Examples of play-drivers/defensive forwards who have fetched a solid return over the last several seasons:
-Goodrow
-Vesey
-Coleman
I very much like Carl Hagelin as a comparable.
Examples of defensive defensemen who have fetched a "premium" in recent years:
-Brenden Dillon
-Justin Braun
-Ben Lovejoy
-Andy Greene
-Brady Skjei
Hell, look at what Tampa gave up to acquire David Savard at the deadline. And this might be a few seasons back, but Douglas Murray fetched two 2nd round picks.
I'm not going to sit here and argue that defense>offense because that was not the point of this. I'm merely stating that teams do place a high value on top-4 defensemen regardless of if they provide offense or not. Chiarot has one year remaining at a reasonable cap hit of $3.5M, played the most minutes on the Stanley Cup runner up team this past season and is highly-regarded in Winnipeg. There's little argument to be made that he's not worth a 2nd and 3rd round pick.

Rebuilding the Hawks
I agree with Strome being part of the package for Seth Jones, but I do think Boqvist goes back the other way as well. Can't see CBJ doing it without him included as they are primarily interested in Dach/DeBrincat as the main piece. Ian Mitchell just isn't on that level.
