Ken Holland goes off
Personally don't think that's a realistic trade proposal for Chychrun. Sounds like Coyotes will only deal him for a solid return and are content to hang onto him if they don't get the right offer. According to Jeff Marek the ask is (or was) a young roster player, a high-end prospect, and a 1st round pick. You've included the 1st rounder and Bourgault is undoubtedly a high-end prospect, but the rest of the offer doesn't make sense. With 2 years left at $2.75M, Warren Foegele has negative value in any trade. Given the price we just had to pay to the Coyotes to shed 2 years of Kassian at $3.25M, we can easily say that the 2nd and 3rd round picks would be the price to include Foegele and that the value of those 3 assets combined would be a wash. That leaves Bourgault, Samorukov, and the 1st for Chychrun with $2M retained. Samorukov may turn into an NHL player, but his value in a trade is extremely minimal. Had a mediocre season in the AHL this year, his one and only NHL game was an absolutely abysmal showing, played only 2:28 before getting benched and sent down the next day. The fact that he now has to clear waivers to be sent to the AHL combined with the uncertainty regarding his potential military service situation in Russia tanks any value he would have in a trade. So all in all, this offer doesn't really even come close to meeting the alleged asking price, and you are also asking Arizona to retain $2M for the next 3 years which would most certainly increase the price even further. If you removed the retained salary on Chychrun, Samorukov, and the 2nd and 3rd round picks, then swapped Puljujarvi or Yamomoto for Foegele, then it would be a realistic offer. Whether it would ever make sense to make a deal like this is another question.

Just messing around - thoughts

Wouldn't Rust and McCann be extremely close value wise? And this trade is of course assuming that Puljujarvi continues to score at or over a P/GP over the full year in Finland which would certainly increase his value

19-20 Oilers 83M cap trades with TOR BUF

Quoting: CD282

That TOR trade is BAD for the Oilers. I doubt Johnsson is any better than Benson and Brown has little value. Meanwhile Larsson is a key player for the Oilers.
Benson in the AHL
20 years old: 65, 14-49-63 +19
Johnsson in the AHL
22 years old: 75, 20-27-47 +8
23 years old: 54, 26-28-54 +16

Larsson is a solid defensemen, yes, but he only has 2 years left until UFA. Benson will likely be a solid NHLer but that has absolutely no effect whatsoever on Johnsson's value to the Oilers. He put up 20-23-43 this year and can provide some desperately needed secondary scoring at a price that the Oilers can actually afford. Brown doesn't have a ton of value but he is only 2 years removed from scoring 20 goals and could easily put up 30-40 points in the Oilers' Top 9.

That is a wildly unrealistic trade... trading table scraps for the best player in the world.

MTL trade is meh, other two are heavily lopsided. You have to step outside your Hurricanes fan box when proposing trades.

Edmonton Oilers Realistic 2018-19 Lineup - THOUGHTS?
Overall not bad, however I do have a few thoughts:
1. No way we get Nurse at $2.8M. Under $3M would be great, but $3.5M is a realistic number on a 2 year deal.
2. I could definitely see Bouchard getting a look in the first few games based on his training camp/pre-season, but I'd be shocked if he actually does well enough to stay with the team all year.
3. Even after losing Tavares, the Islanders still have a respectable roster. Ho-Sang is on the verge of making legit contributions to the team, so if they do want to move him, I'd have to assume it would be for a roster player better than Drake Caggiula.

1. Duclair is a UFA now so Chicago can't even trade his rights and that suggestion makes no sense
2. Schlemko was acquired by MTL for a 5th, why on earth would he now be worth a 3rd? He's a 6/7 D who is heavily overpaid

Quoting: mk458

Just did some research into it, and you're 100% right. However you can go 7.5% over the salary cap after the performance bonuses are accounted for (about 6 million with the current cap). So either way, yams bonuses shouldn't screw us over

You are allowed up to 7.5% without getting penalized, but that extra money over the cap doesn't just disappear, it rolls over into the next season. So say Yams and JP both have a solid season and we go over the cap by $3M, that money automatically counts against our cap in 2019-20.

Quoting: mk458

Bonuses on entry levels only affect player's salary, not their cap hit. So that isn't an issue

That is 100% incorrect, all ELC bonuses earned by a player count against the cap. If you go to the CapFriendly rundown for the Oilers, thats why they have $2.5M under 'potential performance bonuses' in 18-19 for Jesse Puljujarvi. His cap hit is listed as $925K because thats his base salary and the minimum he is guaranteed to earn, thus the minimum he is guaranteed to count against the cap. But his contract has different levels of performance based bonuses that total $2.5M, so if he hits the necessary marks to earn all those bonuses, the whole $2.5M counts against the cap, and JP's true cap hit for the year ends up being $3.425M.

prospects
Most of these moves are wildly unrealistic.
- JVR is a highly sought after UFA, he will almost certainly end up getting a contract with an AAV higher than $6M and term longer than 4 years.
- Slepyshev has already signed a contract in the KHL and will be going back to Russia.
- Strome's qualifying offer for next year is $3M, why on earth would he take significantly less money on a 4 year term.
- $3.2M isn't even a realistic number on a bridge deal for Nurse. Anything longer term will cost the Oilers at least $4.2M, which is what Klefbom got.
- RNH is only 25 years old, has 3 years left on his deal, and is coming off a career year. Pacioretty puts up more points, yes, but trading RNH for a guy who is 1 year away from being a UFA is crazy, never mind adding a pick and retaining salary to boot.
- If the Oilers are adding incentives for a team to take Lucic, it's to get rid of his contract and clear cap space. Eriksson has the exact same cap hit as Lucic with only 1 less year, so trading Lucic for Eriksson would be a completely lateral move. The Oilers adding two draft picks to this pointless swap makes even less sense.
- After his abysmal shortened season last year, no team is going to trade for Sekera with that contract until they see if he's able to bounce back. Sekera is also the Oilers' best offensive defensemen, an area in which they are already struggling. Trading him would just make that worse.
- This proposed STL deal is by far the worst. It's extremely rare for UFA rights leading up to free agency to be dealt, and when it does happen, it's for a mid round pick at best. If Hutton actually wanted to sign a contract with the Oilers, he could simply do it when free agency opens. The suggestion that the Oilers would trade a player as valuable as Puljujarvi and Cammalleri and a 3rd round pick for just UFA rights to Hutton is mind-numbingly stupid. Not to mention that the money you suggested almost certainly isn't enough.
- The last two suggested moves are the only ones that make at least some sense. Buffalo wouldn't want Montoya if they are already getting Talbot, and that price looks a little steep considering Talbot is 1 year away from UFA and Malone has zero value in a trade.

To me, Yamamoto playing his way onto the team would be a bonus. It's entirely possible but I just don't think it should be expected. If he does turn pro this year, I think its more likely for him to at least start in the AHL. If he does make the team, then he would just slide in where I have Rattie. Unfortunately, Yamamoto making the team would put the team in even more cap trouble with potential bonus overages.
