Canes decline. Why would they trade the guy that had 15 points less but has team control for one year of a guy that may or may not score more in a system that chokes offense? That's blatantly ignoring Pesce. Absolutely not

Not enough retention, WAY Too much for EK. EK should not cost a top 6 forward unless San Jose are eating 50%. He's 33 and has an ankle made of carbon fibre.

Yes, send a cap dump and an AHL filler in Timmins for one of the best DFD in the NHL... Why would Carolina do this? Pesce's better than Brodie. Timmins is meh when he's healthy, and the 1st doesn't help them now.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingExLeafs</b></div><div>Brodie isn't a cap dump. He's the perfect replacement for Pesce in the Carolina system if they decide to move on from him.</div></div>
He's a cap dump... he's a worse version of Pesce that you tried to move FOR Pesce. That is a cap dump. He holds 0 value to Carolina who already have Orlov, Skjei, and Slavin as LHD. He's not better than any of them. He's not better than Burns either. So I repeat, why would Carolina downgrade when they have this cartoony D core? The reason they'd move Pesce now is to get EK65. Brodie prohibits that

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Windjammer</b></div><div>Do you think Carolina will resign Pesce, or just move him elsewhere for pieces they like?
I think the Jets most likely extend Scheifele, but the last I heard was that Pesce was most likely going to be too expensive to extend for Carolina.</div></div>
It seems like more likely to move at this point but wouldn’t say it’s for sure. Issue seems to be term - we want 4-5 years max and he wants 7-8 years.
If they move him I’d imagine it’s either to flip those assets for a replacement or a top 6 add. EK sounds like the replacement they’re going for but who knows.
He also apparently is fine playing the deal out and reevaluating next summer. He’s got a 15 team list so has a bit of control and limits our options depending on who’s on there. I personally think keeping him and moving Skjei is the smart move but I can see both sides of it.

Canes also reject that deal. Doesn’t make sense for either team.

I get the price tag is a concern... fair enough about the system piece... I just think we're going to have to swallow at least one person who's not good in their own end to fix the scoring problem. I mean TDA was able to survive for a year without being a complete defensive liability and he played a position that was much more about defense

Issue is, Montréal can afford to match that pretty easily. The Rangers are going to have a really, really hard time with this, especially if the Canadiens (or anyone else) go after Laf at the same time

I don't know about "easily match". They currently can't afford to match this, plus pay Laf anything reasonable, plus get to an 18 man roster. Serious moves will have to be made to accommodate this offer. <a href="https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/4231309">I made an AGM</a> detailing so.

You realize that in this hypothetical, the Rangers could take back Skjei's $5.25M, sign Garnet Hathaway as a UFA for $2M, and still have an extra $750K under the cap?
Stars having grit/sandpaper is a nice bonus, but if the main reason you keep $8M Trouba over $5.25M Skjei is "grit", well - you can get that much cheaper than that, and clearing that deal off the books has a lot more value than spending UFA dollars on that sandpaper you're looking for.

All of those guys cost nothing in terms of salary $. "GRIT" is not enough of a reason to keep this albatross. You allocate 1, maybe 2-3% of your cap space to "GRIT", not 10% . for all the moaning about what "GRIT" means to a lineup, the best teams understand that it's something you address only AFTER everything that really matters is accounted for; skill, scoring and sound defensive depth. You can get "GRIT" elsewhere for cheaper and in someone who might do more than block shots and delivery poorly timed hits that take them out of position leading to goals against.

Not gonna lie JP to CAR was the easiest fit to call ever. Kind of surprised it took this long.
I'm a little worried that it doesn't do much for them, but I like the bet on JP so it's hard to not like this for the cost

Lets be serious now
Timo trade is a lot of quantity but not much quality. Core piece is a 25 first which isn’t appealing. A lot of solid prospects but nobody sharks would be excited about. Realistically it’ll take 23 first and probably either Nikishin or morrow plus another decent piece like a second rounder or B prospect. That might be too much but that’s what it probably takes.
I really like the Bennett idea and made a couple posts about it. Not sure if cats will sell if they fall back and even if they did Bennett might not be someone they want to move on from. If they did you can take out the staals. I get the nostalgia but realistically that doesn’t help the locker room by removing guys like Stepan and CDH and doesn’t help on the ice either. Fans don’t need to get behind making a push, majority are already behind it. It’s more likely we’ll be upset in the moment if we don’t do enough. Otherwise it’s probably gonna take the 24 first plus a couple of lesser pieces I’d imagine. Maybe a third and a guy like Suzuki.
