Yep, he was average last year, which got the Devils to third best in NHL, and that is pretty much what Devils need/can get at this point to salvage teh season. This year he's basically like having Blackwood again. Best to get someone like Mrazek, and ride Schmid. Then they would have two goalies that are FA and can decide if tehy want to completely redo the position or move forward with Schmid and a competent backup.

I've always been a big fan of his tho, so some kind of Vanacek-Vejmelka trade could be appealing</div></div>
The one thing I like about Vejmelka is that he's used to playing behind a terrible defense. Analytically, he's been positive in GSAA last two years, including half a goal above average this year. He's never played in the playoffs while Mrazek has awhile ago (and actually did pretty well) so hard to tell how he'll do but VAnecek has had several playoff runs and been terrible in each, which means alot to Devils but not much to Blackhawk or Coyotes.

Allen, Mrazek, Monty, Lyon, Reimer, Stolarz, Lankinen. All guys I'd target for around a 4th ideally.
Schmid been actually pretty good his last 6 appearances, I'd roll with him as the starter/1B and look for another guy to fill the tandem, at least while vanacek gets his **** together</div></div>
Agree on Schmid. Assuming Saaros is out as a candidate, the only guy I think could be worth trading for and potentially gettable this season is Vejmelka, but I don't know if he's a big improvement over Vanecek so hard to go much more than what I proposed for Mrazek, plus maybe a 4th. And with Arizona playing ok, don't know that they'd move Vejmelka for that at this point. Stolarz, Lyon, and Reimer are all guys I'd be happy to take for what you said as a 3rd goalie, essentially replacing KAllgren or Kinkaid.

No argument there. Didn't say it was consequential, but teams need good fitting depth too.

The Hawks aren't retaining anything. In fact, tehy are actually gaining cap for this year in the goalie swap. And they get a goalie for next year who was pretty damn solid last year, who only went to hell in the playoffs, which won't be an issue for the HAwks.

I think its posturing because 1) Nashville thinks tehy can contend this year and 2) they have Askarov in the system. If tehy don't have Askarov, don't think Juuse is ever traded and is just extended. With him, if Nashville doesn't contend this year, I think it makes sense to move him and commit to a full rebuild. Vanecek is cheap enough yet experienced enough to help break Askarov in in a platoon and then Nashville can flip Vanecek. But all this is predicated on them being willing to turn the page and transition to Askarov in the next year or two. If Trotz feels like you described, and wants an Askarov/Saaros platoon for the forseeable future, or wants to keep contending then there is no realistic deal to be made for the Devils or probably anyone else. I just think it would be poor asset management from Nashivlle to sign Saaros for $7 million plus a year while keeping Askarov (who will also need a new contract at that time), when their forward group might be the worst in the NHL (there is not a single forward on their roster that scored 20+ NHL goals last year, which is hard to do in today's NHL) and they are paying $8.5 -$ 12 million a season for guys NOT to play for them. Maybe they extend Saaros and look to move Askarov but think its very hard to win committing a ton to goalies and 30+ year old defensemen without many top line forward prospects and only one current upper tier forward on the team.

I would ideally do this deal before the trade deadline this year. Probably have to throw in a bit more like another pick to make it happen. But goalies don't usually go for much more than a #1 and change, even very good ones.

Trading Saaros to NJ while clearing cap space for LAK
I actually think Clarke is better than Turcotte, although Turcotte has the higher upside due to pedigree. But Clarke was actually younger than him last year and was much better in the same league. For Kings, they only have 6 defenseman on the active roster and about $100k of cap space so this would free them up with enough space to keep an extra defenseman. Could see the Devils shooting over maybe a 3 or 4 to the Kings to make it more even.

Goalies don't get a ton in trade. HArd to find one that really cost a team a huge package in teh alst few years. I think Saaros would be perfect for Devils but based on other goalie trades, think something like a 1st, Graeme Clarke, VAnecek, another B prospect, and conditional pick like a 2 or 3 that moves up a round if devils win cup. Maybe include a guy like Bastian to balance the money if needed. NAshville could probably play VAnecek for this year, maybe half of next before flipping him for a 3 or so and turning things over to Askarov.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MontysPython</b></div><div>Value for Desmith might be there, but none of the trade makes sense for Mtl. Trading Petry, Dvorak, and even Armia might be more important tasks for Mtl than trading one of the goalies, especially Desmith. On all of those contracts, they'd like to retain(including Allen).
In the end, using a retention spot on Casey would only leave one for Petry or someone else(including a deal like Boninos last year). Tyce, although I liked him when I went to a Utica game is not the biggest add to the Habs, then to give up a pick also probably isn't in Hughes' ideas.
(Hughes has yet to give up picks except for same round swaps and for 1st round picked players. Doesn't really mean much, but that he's not keen on giving up draft capital)</div></div>
He's giving up a pick but getting a higher one. So its really a swap, although not a big one. And agree with you on the retained salary spots but I can't imagine he's going to be able to trade more than one of those other guys this year even with 50% retained. On something like this, maybe he could get rid of Petry or Savard at half off but I doubt both. Don't think anyone would touch Armia or Dvorak with multiple years left, even going through a second team at 75% off. If he can get something for Monahan or Desmith or Montelbault, he'd have all three retained slots to use next year and should be able to dump all three in a contract year with retention.

I know you don't bank on unknowns but the amount of discussion where Vanacek gets 60+ games is kind of wild and I just don't see it happening</div></div>
Honestly, I agree with you and I'd do an even split to see what he's got but Fitzgerald seems to want to eitehr upgrade from Vanecek as the starter or Schmid as the "backup" for this season based on what he's said.

Bortuzzo is a defensemen mostly for next year since Bjugstad would replace Boquist. Perunovich is there because he can be sent down without waivers next year while Bahl can't. The rest is largely irrelevant to balance Utica roster. Really more of a deal for next year than something that matters for this year.

Boquist is maybe a third line guy at best, walsh is a 3rd line PP guy at best. Devils need a cheapish defensive depth D man for a year while Nemec and Hughes get acclimated to NHL so maybe a small overpay but those players are probably the equivalent of a late 3rd and 5th

I'd love to get Tarasenko, just don't know if they can afford him, although could get close if they didn't take Haula or Tatar and just got a 4th liner from the minors and then signed a veteran depth center to the minimum. May also have to go cheaper than Tablot at backup goal. Like Vanecek so far but with Devils goalie luck, think getting a really good veteran backup that can play 30 games is really important since I'm not all in on Schmid yet. Think Wood is gonna get something like $20mil/4 or 5 if he stays healthy and keeps producing and that is a killer contract for a 3rd or 4th liner that takes alot of penalties. I originally thought someone like Van Riemsdyk or Pacioretty to add some size to the Hughes line instead of Tatar but his line is playing really well right now with great chemistry and think they can get him on a one or two year deal. May feel completely different a month from now.
