If Reilly hasn't committed to a contract with Detroit his value is not large, in essence theyre getting a rental asset to flip at the deadline in him.
Kerfoot is meh, he'd be a stopgap 2C in Detroit, which is useful, but when you're objective is Shane Wright, or Connor Bedard and surrounding them with talent, a meh temporary 2C and a guy to flip at the deadline aren't worth much.
Trade Reilly to a contender for value, and if you want Bertuzzi trade value to Detroit for him.

Oh for sure, and I don't think you have to, there seems to be an odd obsession with trading for Bertuzzi, you already have a very similar player, just resign them and keep the assets for a more valuable move.

Leafs Need Two Top Six Wingers
I think if trading a 1st is out of the question then the trade doesn't get done. If Yzerman trades Bertuzzi id be surprised if it didnt include a 1st or a piece of similar value.
Robertson and a late 2nd is a reasonable package, Detroit's need is quality of talent not quantity of talent so they would probably persue an offer where they are recieving a higher pick unless someone is willing to trade a prospect so good they shouldnt be traded á la Forsberg for Erat (which the leafs of course should not do)

RNH is so low because he has full trade protection, and is signing for 2 years longer, through to when he is 36. RNH is coming off a big boy 7x6m contract.
Bertuzzi for 6 years would take him to 32 when his value is decreasing, so this deal would be Bert's big boy contract. Career earnings are under $8m for Bert, over $44m for RNH. A fair longer term deal for Bertuzzi probably starts with a 5. á la Mantha's contract.

Right, but I think Detroit only does this if they can't get a more positive asset for their cap hit, which is probably their most valuable trade chip. A Marc Staal type trade would be more likely if the deal is out there.

So I doubt this exact scenario would work out, but it would be a way for a team other than Carolina to get Hamilton signed to an 8 year contract.
I would suspect if Columbus were to do it, theyd trade Jones for value, then sign Hamilton for 7 years.

I think they will be lucky to get any 1sts this summer for their cap space and end up with a few 2,3,4 picks and b level prospects that have a couple years in the A

There's often a fair bit of Hyperbole granted, but the same could be said for the number of trades that dump warm bodies with high contracts onto Detroit for Peanuts.
If we use the Staal trade from last year as a guide (aging but capable(ish) vet in position of need for Detroit - paid $3.2m, cap $5.75m Bonus pre-paid traded for the 45th pick, so almost exactly mid 2nd.
Realise real dollars likely mean more than cap dollars in these trades.
Koskinen at $4.5m salary and cap, position of need, not young, vaguely capable, one year remaining. Taking on his contract should return similar value, maybe slightly higher than Staal, so say a 2nd, or a 2nd and a 4th or 5th.
Kassian: somewhat of a plug, certainly did not produce offensively with some of the best players in the world, decent physical presence, but honestly...meh player. Not a position of need for Detroit. owed £3.5m per year real dollars and cap for the next three years. So honestly, value wise 1 year of Kassian would not be massively different from one year of Staal - he's signed for three more. We could be generous and say that there is a chance he improves his play in Detroit and isn't a total plug, so instead of saying 1 Year of Kassian is worth the same as 1 year of Staal i.e. he would require the equivalent of 3 2nd round picks to take on, lets say it's only 2 2nds.
That puts the rough value of taking on those negative assets as 3 2nd round picks. Proposing a trade with 3 2nd round picks is unwieldy, unpopular, and honestly, Detroit probably don't have that many players of interest in the 2nd round of drafts, so the natural response is to use a more valuable piece.

Makeover
The Detroit trade is a little silly. The two players hold little value in all honesty, theyre not old, but theyre not prospects anymore, and won't become impact pieces.
A 2nd from the oilers should be in the 50s, and a 3rd should be in the 80s.
2AHL players plus a late 2nd and late 3rd does not relieve you of Neal's contract imo.
The Staal trade got Detroit the 45th pick, for a player who played a position of need capably, for one year with his $1m signing bonus already paid and a real $salary of $3.2m.
The value for a Neal trade needs to therefore be more than double that as James Neal is paid only salary no bonuses, and is owed $5.75m real dollars in both of the remaining years of his deal. James Neal also does not play a position of need for Detroit, nor does he have the same leadership qualities as Staal. Assuming Edmonton finish in the same position as this year and therefore draft 20th, double the value of the Staal trade would be their 1st at 20th and a 3rd. Because the real dollars are higher the value would need to be better still. And that is assuming that the value of cap space hasnt increased since then, which is likely given our better understanding of the long term cap situation in the league.

Very true very true. In my head it would be beneficial to both as Detroit might take a lower sweetener to fill the 2C role, and maybe Tampa would be able to send say, Killorn to Seattle at a lower cost owing to his shorter contract? If my Maths is right that leaves just over $4m in cap space which should be workable.
As I said, I may be wrong and my knowledge of Tampa's system is not perfect.

The team trading for Eichel should be one on the upswing. Much as the narrative is that Detroit is exactly that, we aren't and shouldnt be. The team improved slightly on the historically bad season, but they looked better thanks to their division, and need 1-2 further years of drafting high before we think about coming out and making ambitious moves like this.
Similarly, I don't think Buffalo should do this, as they need to gain at least 2 premier pieces for trading away Jack Eichel, and as a Wings fan the only piece at that level is Raymond.

We have Hronek and Seider, that's about it.
Stecher is UFA next year and it's highly uncertain if he stays and if so at what price.
Lindström is solid but will never be a huge point scorer.
Seth Barton is the only RD in Grand Rapids
LD prospects are bountiful but not RD.
Liljegren could turn out to he better than Hronek and if that happens then Hronek can be traded for a haul of assets, much more than Smith will ever get us in a trade.
Liljegren is waivers exempt for next year and can be used for call-ups without risk of losing him.
Smith is currently our 9th winger and next year Raymond and Berggren comes up.
This is a very good deal for Detroit.

Tuomisto and Stetcher are also potential long term RD options.
Acquiring Liljegren as a reclaimation project for a prospect (ish) works, Svechnikov, Cholowski etc would be fine.
I would honestly keep Givani Smith over them because he is both reasonably skilled and could comfortably play in an NHL bottom 6, contribute some offence and reasonable defence, but he can also beat the piss out of people like Jamie Benn. We just don't really have anyone else that can do that in the pipeline.

Honestly, I think the team takes a step forward in terms of quality of play, but slips in the standings. Looking at the teams below, Anaheim, New Jersey and Buffalo all have easier schedules next year than this year, and Detroit's schedule is harder next year as theyre playing in a tougher division. I think we're top 5 even without a lottery win. Wright, Lambert or Savoie would be a great pickup down the middle.

Yzerplan - Give me your thoughts Red Wing fans
So my over-riding thought is that you're coming from a different angle than Yzerman (seemingly) and the fanbase want to go. Fundamentally Detroit's pipeline is deep, but is missing that high end franchise talent.
Their needs are therefore high end talent. If you look at their drafting last year you can kinda see this. Their depth picks are high risk, high reward. As such, the main need is time, either for a draft lottery win for Wright, Lambert, Bedard, Michkov etc, or for an already drafted player to emerge.
While waiting for time, you're not really going after big ticket UFAs, so there will be some dead cap, might as well get assets for taking on bad contracts, no reason to give up assets to get rid of bad contracts. Furthermore, this affords Yzerman the ability to be patient with roster moves, the Bertuzzi trade may be ok value wise, maybe a little low, but doesn't make sense for Detroit, if im trading with Pittsburgh, I want a 1st in 22 or 23, because they could easily fall off, be a lottery team, and the asset could become an elite talent.
