That's true, but the writing was pretty much on the wall for it beforehand. Cozens has been getting time on the second powerplay unit which is a pretty good indicator that they see him in the lineup, and Asplund hasn't been on anything more than a depth line at any point in camp. Couple that with the fact that both Lazar and Okposo were out on that day so things had to be shuffled around in the bottom six, and I don't think there was to read into there.
I'm not poking at you directly, and I like reading your thoughts on here. It was just driving me crazy that I couldn't go anywhere for the past day or two without hearing "they're playing Skinner with THEM??!!".

Skinner will likely start the year on a line with Dylan Cozens. Is Cozens one of the worst players on the team, or are we overreacting to line combinations from a single practice a full week before the season starts?

Final predictions on the forward lines
I have a feeling that if you flipped those third and fourth lines, people wouldn't be nearly as outraged about Skinner's spot.
I think these lines could actually work really well, with the Skinner line getting sheltered offensive zone minutes. That masks Skinner's defensive woes, helps ease Cozens' transition into the league, and gives Cozens a real offensive talent to work with.
Frankly, I have no idea why everyone is up in arms about this.

Starting lineup
Love the lineup! If I had to bet, I'd say that this is exactly how it will look on opening night.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>gretzkyghosts</b></div><div>Very nice.
I like that you have Right handed players on RW and Left handed players on LW.
IMO Ruotsalainen and Mittelstadt will in the line up, but your guess is as good as mine and with Krueger behind the bench, anything goes.
Just a thought replace Rieder with Ruotsalainen, as Arttu was a PK forward for Ilves Tampere.
Slide Cozens to RW and slip Mittelstadt to 3rd center, bumping Lazar to the press box.
Giving Casey two good wingers just may bring out his talents.
But Cozens at center could be a good move as he was one of the better face off center in the Championship.
EDIT
Did you do one for the Oilers.
I would like to see how you use Kahun and what you think will be his ceiling.</div></div>
As exciting as those lines would be, I think it would leave us too thin on the penalty kill. And from everything I've read, Reider had more than earned himself a roster spot with his play in camp. I think that for the PK, we need to have Reider, Eakin, and then one of Lazar/Sheahan in the lineup. I know Ruutsolainen played the kill in Liiga, but it's a whole different on the small ice over here so I don't think he's plug and play just yet.

Guys, take a deep breath on this. No need to overreact to practice lines on one day of training camp when we had two forwards taking a rest day.
Skinner isn't going to be on the defensive fourth line. That line will almost surely be Reider - Eakin - Okposo. Skinner will most likely be on a line with Cozens or Mittelstadt. He'll have offensive talents with him, and that line will most likely get sheltered offensive zone minutes if anything.
We'll be fine. And we should all be excited that Tage has been looking good on the first line. That is really great to see.

What Ralph should do
I like the premise, but my worry is that Cozens isn't ready for that role. I think it's safer to start him in a smaller third line role and let him work his way up to the second, much like Chicago did with Kirby Dach.
I really like it as a second half lineup if Cozens impresses in the beginning of the year.

Big trade
Like others have said, this doesn't work for Buffalo.
Any PLD trade with us would probably revolve around Reinhart from a cap standpoint. But realistically, Buffalo isn't a fit for him because if he thinks Columbus is too small of a market, he ain't gonna stick around in Buffalo.

One trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>I don't think you know very much about Ghost to make those observations. Firstly in 2019, he was injured off and on for the first half of the season, and was supplanted to 3rd pairing, (mainly because of his nagging injuries, but more so do to the fact that Philly had 5 guys who could carry the puck and had some offensive flair, 2 of which were Provorov and Sanheim at 1LD and 2LD). And the sheer fact he was still playing through his injuries, was down to his talent.
The injury got worse and Ghost went on IR, bringing in stay at home Hagg and then the team caught fire, going from 8th in east to challenge for 1st and winning the round robin. Once injury free, with the team gelling and Hagg's style the better fit, there just wasn't the place for Ghost (who's game was replaced by 4 other flyers dmen who are 30+ pt guys).
You can say Ghost was benched, but it had little to do with his play and everything to do with the teams play with the stay at home/shot blocking/hitting Hagg (who is a .25 pts a game guy) in his place. The games Ghost did play in the playoffs he looked solid, albeit unspectacular. SO Ghost, with injuries the past 2 years, 3rd pairing time (and PHI plays a PP with only 1 dman, Provorov or Niskanen), struggled, but most PHI fans will point at injuries/minutes/situations and not a drop off in play.
Overall, it comes down to whether you think Ghost is the 50+ pt guy he was his 1st four seasons, or the guy whose been supplanted by team needs and injuries the last 2 years.
Risto is just 1 yr younger and paid 900k more for 1 less year, those things are about even. But forgetting Ghosts offensive output his first 4 years AND the ridiculous +/- of Risto is a bit unfair. Risto has been consistent, but thats not entirely a complement in regards to his defensive progression, whereas with Ghost you can point at team depth and inujuries for a definitive change.
Risto might look better in 2nd pair minutes, but again its about fit for the team. The hope of Risto becoming a more reliable and better defender is almost the risk that Ghost, injury free, will be able to return to what made him a 50+ pt guy for 4 yrs. Sometimes the singularly best player is not the best fit.
Ghost is the bigger risk, no doubt, whether he can return to his 40+ pt capability with pp and 2nd pairing minutes. This trade above favors the Flyers, but not by much.
I proposed it as it fits what both teams need more. IMO Buff has two young studs, one at RD, with serviceable vets in Montour and Miller at RD, with McCabe and Dahlin at LD. Im not saying BUF is at a win now, but you don't promise Eichel help and sign Hall to a 1 yr without a bit of urgency or change. A BUF defense of Dahlin-Miller, Ghost-Montour, McCabe-Joki looks better to me than with Risto in it and McCabe on 2nd Pair and Joki playing LD.</div></div>
You're right, I haven't seen Ghost play enough to judge him for myself. I'm purely basing my opinion on what Flyers fans have said here and in other places. And I wasn't even aware that he was playing hurt last year, so thanks for adding that insight.
And I agree, in theory it makes perfect sense for the Sabres to swap one of our righties for a LHD who can play second pairing minutes.
That being said, I guess my point of contention is that nothing I've read online gives me confidence that Ghost can come in and be that guy. He could be, but he feels very risky to me. And with three years left at $4.5M, that's more risk than I really want to take on. Neither have a good contract in my view, and I'd rather have the one with two years left than three.
I think it's something I'd be more willing to do if he comes into this season and shows that last year's struggles were in fact due to injury, and that he's still a solid offensive defenseman.

I've thought about this idea before and I wouldn't swap Risto for Ghost, even with the pick added in.
Risto has looked in over his head on the top pairing while playing some of the heaviest minutes in the league. Ghost has looked in over his head while playing very sheltered offensive third pairing minutes.
With Risto, I think dropping him down to the second pairing and easing up his level of competition will work wonders for his game. And we should be able to do that when Dahlin solidifies himself as our #1 defender.
With Ghost, you can't give him easier minutes than he was already playing last year, and he was playing poorly enough in that role to get benched. You're really just hoping that he's able to fix whatever is broken and turn his career around.
With both of them having similar contracts, I'll put my money on Risto.

Personally, I don't think 4C is the right role for Tage. That line ideally would get heavy defensive minutes, and I don't think Tage works well there for the team or for his development.
Tage can play the left wall. I'd put him where you have Reider, move Reider to 4LW, and slide Lazar over to center.

PLD trade your thoughts
Too rich for my blood, not to mention that the cap space doesn't work here. If Buffalo were to make a legitimate push for PLD, something around Reinhart+ makes the most sense for cap reasons.
It's all a moot point anyway because if he's requesting a trade from Columbus to play in a bigger market, he sure isn't signing long-term in Buffalo.

From all the mock expansion drafts I've seen, Borgen is the most likely candidate to be picked by Seattle. Which makes sense, as he's one I'd be most upset with them taking.
Also, the cap will stay at $81.5M next year.

Looks like we're pretty similar.
I decided to go with Thompson over Ruotsalainen because he looked very good in Rochester last year before injury and seems to have come into camp stronger than ever. I don't think it hurts Ruutsolainen to go the Olofsson route and start in the AHL before working his way up. And I went with Eakin on the checking line because they'll probably get the third most minutes, and that's where he is at camp.
But I like the way you have it there too. Thanks for the reply!

BUFF 2021
I think we can safely say Girgs - Eakin - Okposo will be the defensive role checking line to start the year. They've been a line in camp so far, and Krueger has said what he has now is pretty much what he's looking to start with. They'll be the "fourth line" but will most likely be the third by minutes played.
The other bottom six line will likely be a sheltered offensive minutes group. This is where I'd expect some of the younger guys to start. I'd bet on two of Cozens/Tage/Mitts/Ruutsolainen being on that line alongside either Reider or Lazar to add some defensive acumen.

Well if it sits easier with you, this wouldn't have happened even before world juniors.
The Sabres have a lot of eggs in Cozens' basket. He's really our only potential long-term 2C in the system, so the odds of finding a trade that works for him is slim.

I like the offer. My gut feeling is that you can take out the 5th round pick to the Jets and change the 1st round pick to the Jackets to a 2nd. Obviously PLD has shown he can be great in the NHL, but Perfetti is a very high end talent who has a ton of value in his own right. I think with Roslovic added, the difference there is closer to a 2nd than a 1st.

You're probably right. I think he's pretty equivalent to Jake McCabe in talent, but he would be an upgrade to our left side.
But I agree with <a href="/users/Bdawwwgy1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Bdawwwgy1</a>, he is overpaid in my opinion. He just isn't a guy I'd want to be tied to for four years at his price.
There's two big problems with this, and they both go back to the fact that he was a UFA this offseason. One, if Buffalo wanted him at that price, we could have just signed him ourselves. And two, teams don't just sign players and immediately trade them. It's a huge abuse of trust.
