Appreciate the feedback, and I see where you're coming from after researching the Wings' situation a little bit. Seems like while your RHD situation looks real weak at first glance, it should quickly become a point of strength if your prospects develop properly. Seider is a stud, I can't believe I forgot about him. And it looks like Lindstrom is a guy that could fill in on the right side in a pinch.
I think you both are right that this doesn't really provide a benefit for Detroit. Appreciate it!

Am I incorrect in seeing your RD depth as Hronek, Stretcher, Biega? That seems really thin to me, but maybe I'm missing something.

I don't think it's fair to say that, we don't know Johnson or what his priorities are.
Personally, if I were an NHL player the Coyotes would be one of my top picks to play for. Beautiful weather during the hockey season down there.

I think that Raanta trade makes a ton of sense for both teams. My though is to make the 3rd become a 2nd if Raanta plays 25 games, just to protect against his injury concerns a little bit.
Good stuff!

I think the Buffalo trade can be simplified down to just xx for Raanta. I'm not really sure what adding those defensemen does for either team.
How about this:
Arizona gives: Antti Raanta
Buffalo gives: Jonas Johansson + 2022 3rd that becomes a 2021 2nd if Raanta plays 25 games.

The Buffalo side of my trade
I like the fact that you laid out the other side of your deal. I think this makes it a lot more clear why Sabres fans are turning this down.
Both those players are/were close to being good adds for us, so I like the thought process, but it just doesn't come together for me. Kerfoot would have been a good addition over the summer, but we signed Eakin to fill that 3C hole so the need for Kerfoot has pretty much vanished. With Dermott, we definitely have a hole at LD. But what we really need is a second pairing LD, and I don't think Dermott has proven capable of that role. He's not a strong enough player to justify sitting Risto for him, and the same can be said for the rest of our RHD. I'd rather play one on their off side than sit one for Dermott.
Hope that makes sense.

I haven't watched him play enough to call him negative value, but I haven't heard great things from Flyers fans.
And to me, I'd rather take my chances on Risto improving by backing off his minutes a little bit than trade for someone who got demoted and benched last season even while playing sheltered minutes.

Philly could probably use another right shot defenseman, but this wouldn't be how they do it.
They'd be looking to swap Ghost with Risto, and I'm not sure I really want to do that.

I think we can all agree that jack, Tylor, Sam, Jeff, Eric, Victor and Dylan will be among the top 9 forwards.
Wow 7 forwards who could be dropped in among the top 6, in the '17-'18 season they had only 4 who scored 20 or more goals.
So who will be the last two?
Tage, Casey or Arttu are the most likely candidates.
IMO Zemgus, Kyle or Cody are long shots for permanent top 9 residency, but could move up if there are injuries.
So take your pick and put them where you would like.
It is nice looking at the prospects of a third line that could get more than 20 goals over an 82 game season.</div></div>
I agree, that's the best looking group of surefire top 9 players we've had in a long time. Even if we don't count Cozens seeing as he hasn't played a minute of NHL hockey.
I think Cody Eakin is a pretty safe lock at 3C so I'd personally include him in that list as well, but I can see how you might disagree. He's not a sexy name, but he's a proven center in this league who has played 3C minutes in recent years. Zemgus isn't really a true center, Casey hasn't shown a reason to give him that role, and I'd bet that they bring Arttu in on the wing if he makes the team.
I have those 8 penciled into the starting top 9, and then the likes of Arttu, Casey, Zemgus, and Tage competing for the last spot.
Love the discussion!

So 1- that’s a ridiculously small sample size
And 2- even if it wasn’t, that doesn’t equate to him being worthy of a top line role in the NHL
He can start on line3 s& work his way up...
IF (and it’s a BIG “if”)...
he even makes the roster</div></div>
I agree, I know it's a small sample size. I definitely see Tage on the top line as much more of a 'would be nice' than a guarantee. But I think it's within the realm of possibility.
I'd imagine gerowrj16 has a similar thought. That's why he's called this 'potential lines' instead of 'opening night projection'.

He may not, but he looked very good in Rochester before getting hurt last year, and I've heard he's bulked up quite a bit in the off-season. I think there's a chance he can play there. And I'm a fan of spreading out talent, so if he comes in and looks good in that role I'd absolutely keep him there.
That being said, I've had Olofsson and Thompson flipped when I draw out potential lines.

Yeah, after signing Hall we effectively have a shade over $2.5M in space. And we have a lot of potential bonuses to pay out so we're likely not too interested in filling that space.

I'd be pretty hesitant to take on Gardiner from the Sabres' standpoint. He's very risky to me with how much his play dipped last year, and I don't really want risky with 3 years left at 4 per. Especially since we don't really have the necessary cap space in the first place.
I'd pass unless we can send some salary your way, but that probably defeats the point of this trade.

I really like those forward lines, assuming that Thompson and Cozens prove worthy of those roles.
I think this has the potential to be a very well balanced lineup with strong scoring talent on all three top lines.
The defensive pairings make sense to me as well. You're keeping it balanced on each pairing, but I could also see them flipping Jokiharju and Ristolainen to make more of an offensive 2nd pair and defensive 3rd. Either way, no wrong answer there.
Goal is still the clear hole, but nothing you can do there.
Nice job!

Likewise, what's going on with Butcher? I know he had a good amount of hype coming out of Denver, but I get the sense from this site and others that his development has stalled. But I haven't seen him play a whole lot.
At face value I think swapping him for either Montour or Miller could make sense. But I'm hesitant based on how eager a lot of Devil's fans seem to move him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Smitty426</b></div><div>whats the story with Montour? I assumed he was a keeper</div></div>
It's just hard to see him as a long-term asset here with his contract expiring at the end of this season and our glut of depth at RD. We've got Ristolainen, Jokiharju, Miller, and Montour as NHL RHDs and a prospect in Will Borgen who is ready to move up to the NHL. Risto and Jokiharju most likely aren't going anywhere, and Montour is likely easier to move than Miller since he's on a one year contract.
He hasn't been bad here, but he hasn't stood out as much as many fans expected when we traded for him. He's a good defenseman, fantastic skater that is solid but not spectacular in both zones. I think most Sabres' fans were expecting more offensive ability. But we've been playing him on the left side for the most part because we're weak at LHD, and he hasn't been as comfortable there.
So I think it makes some sense to trade him if we get either a similarly talented lefty in return or enough cap space to go out and improve in net.

You both have fair points. Hutton is a cap dump, he absolutely is. And they could have just kept Crow. But the difference is that Crawford is a $3.9M vet goalie whereas Hutton at 50% retained would be a $1.375M vet goalie who is gone after this year. That's likely more palatable to ownership on a team that's trying for a short retool. He's cheap, and realistically it would be a future considerations type trade, so it would cost nothing but cash.
My point is just that having Hutton would likely be better for the team and for Subban and Delia's development than just tossing them to the wolves. I don't know if the Hawks see either as long-term options in net, but having a combined 84 NHL starts between your two goalies seems concerning to me.

Toronto doesn't have the cap space for this. They'd pass.
I think Hutton to Chicago makes sense. They have a very, very young and inexperienced goalie group and Hutton is regarded as a great mentor and vet presence. Sabres would likely have to retain 50%, but I could see Chicago being interested so Delia/Subban don't get caved in both physically and mentally.

I don't think anyone is arguing that Subban has a good contract. He's obviously vastly overpaid.
But that's not a good reason for them to trade for Risto You could argue that he is also overpaid, and the Devils aren't a contending team in need of a Risto to put them over the edge. Gotta put yourself in their shoes.

Hanifin would make a great fit in Buffalo. He's a little expensive for what he brings, but he'd be perfect as a second pairing guy behind Dahlin.
I still struggle to see how trading Hanifin makes sense for Calgary. They have a perfect situation at LD where Gio - Hanifin - Valimaki can smoothly morph into Valimaki - Hanifin - Gio as Gio declines with age and Valimaki progresses as he should. They're a little imbalanced with too many LHDs and not enough RHDs, but that could be fixed by just trading Kylington for a similar bottom pairing righty.
I don't see why they have any reason to move Hanifin. And that hurts to say because I'd love him in Buffalo.
