Yeah I agree Jarry is likely to be NHL ready by next season, but the issue is I can't see anyone wanting to pick up Varlamov with his injury track record, especially since he only has 1 year left. I also don't think the Avs could justify putting a guy they're paying almost $6m. a year on the bench for most of the season, so if I had to pick between having the soon-to-be 23 year old play 20ish games in the NHL or closer to 60 games in the AHL where he can hone his skills just a little bit more, I'd just as soon start him in the AHL. Then the year after when Varly's contract is up ease Jarry into a starting role by doing a 1A/1B situation with him and Bernier. Year after that give him a new contract (assuming he hasn't busted, which I don't think will happen obviously or I wouldn't be trading for him), maybe find him a new backup depending on how Bernier has been performing, and 3 years later you've got a young 25 year old starting goalie just as players like Makar, Kerfoot, Compher, Timmins, Girard, Jost, and Rantanen are stepping into their prime while Landeskog and MacKinnon are in their prime as well.

And besides, if Jarry absolutely tears it up after half a year or so in the AHL you can start looking to see if there are any teams with underperforming/injured starters you can shop Varlamov to. While it may not be absolutely ideal at first, long term this gives the Avs a lot of flexibility and affords them the luxury of not having to rush a kid who only has 27 NHL games under his belt along with some subpar numbers at the AHL level
