<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ludefice</b></div><div>The team that has all the cap in the world, noone to spend it on, and paid Corey Perry $4.1 million and a pick to Tampa for it too won't take a guy like Tavares for cheap if they can? The biggest road block there is Tavares not Chicago not wanting to do something like that to have a guy like Tavares around to support Bedard.</div></div>

Oh please give your head a shake, the two situations are no where close to being the same

Perry was a FA and the Hawks traded a 7th round pick for his rights. They had the option to offer whatever they wanted so they had control over any potential cap commitment. They chose to overpay both Perry and Foligno to ensure the cap floor was reached and provide leadership for the young players entering the organization. The cap floor will not be a problem this offseason.

With this proposal Tavares IF he waives will cost a 3rd round pick and count $11m against the cap regardless of when the trade happens (pre or post July 1st). Additionally, this narrative that Tavares will mentor or support Bedard is flawed for two reasons. First, the Hawks addressed veteran leadership with the acquisitions of Foligno, Hall and Dickinson to go along with Jones and Murphy… how many mentors do you think he needs? Secondly, IF Tavares is this great mentor or support why has he only led the Leafs to one playoff victory in six years? For $11m I would have expected more.

So would the Hawks take Tavares, probably yes. Should they pay to take him off the Leafs hands and gift wrap them $11m, absolutely not. The Leafs can send their 2024 1st round pick WITH Tavares or find another team to deal with.

Thread: Playoffs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hawksguy81</b></div><div>Really? So if Skinner was in this summer's UFA class, you don't think the Hawks would be in on him if he was willing to sign for 2x$5m per? That seems reasonable to me. The 2nd covers the 3rd year, which the Hawks probably don't want.</div></div>

No I don’t. The guy is 32 and has had one really good season in his career. The fact he has played over a 1,000 games in the NHL and never sniffed the playoffs is concerning considering he is paid to be a leader and yet has never led his team anywhere.

Is $5m reasonable for Skinner, probably but you are still freeing up cap space for the Sabres. Why should the Hawks let them walk away from their mistake at a discount? According to Puckpedia’s cap relief calculator $5m in cap space for three seasons is worth the 14th pick in the first round. Now I know the response from some will be, well you are getting Skinner for the $5m… and my response, why do the Sabres feel comfortable walking away from him? The answer is pretty obvious, they feel they can a better on ice return for their money.

At the end of the day KD has to ask himself, is getting a 2nd pick and allocating $5m for Skinner the next three seasons the best use of his resources… I don’t think it is. There are other options that will probably be available with less term that should be able to net the Hawks a 2nd round pick if cap dumps are the route they choose to go. There are definitely better options in FA that they could spend the money on; Guentzel, Teravainen etc.

Now if the Sabres are offering up their 1st round pick as sweetener to dump that contract then I would jump at that deal. It would mean the Hawks should find themselves in a position to grab someone like Sennecke, Catton, Iginla in the draft.
