If Drury pulled this off he’d win GM of the year hands down. Out of almost 12m in cap space and get a decent young player.. it’s a win

Possible Trade
It’s more likely NYR call up Perreault post college season than them making this trade . Perreault is a top top prospect, he will never be traded for a rental.

The number 1 player on all the trade boards, a 1st line right shot two way center (one of the very best two way centers) won't be acquired cheap.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MoxNix</b></div><div>Just about everybody wants either or both players. Yet the vast majority post ridiculously low offers for them. Newsflash bidding wars go to the highest bidder not the lowest!</div></div>
Look at the playoff teams, and then see what has the cap to dish out an 8m+ contract to a 29 year old… even with the cap going up 3-4m, there aren’t many (NYR being one of them) that can resign him. It is very rare when a pending UFA signs with the team acquiring him for a cup run, because most can’t afford it.
Also, who was the last player who got as you are defining a top 50 prospect, a 1st and more as a pending ufa? It just simply doesn’t happen. The last time a 1st plus top 50 prospect was traded was the Eichel deal. You are absolutely delusional to expect that type of return. If this was last summer or the summer prior when he had at minimum a full year left I would’ve said maybe.. but as a pending ufa it just won’t happen.

Ny Rangers FAKE
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MoxNix</b></div><div>Trades have to work for both teams not just yours. Calgary wants 1st round picks and good roster players or A prospects who can fill needs soon, not just w/e you want to get rid of. If Lindholm is traded then the two biggest needs will be:
1. a 1st line center or someone with good potential to eventually become at least a decent 2nd line center.
2. Right shot forwards with the potential to become good top 6 players.
IOW, the ideal return would include a 2024 1st and a pretty good right shot center or center prospect. Plus more how much more depending on just how high the pick is and how good the player/prospect is.
1st round picks (the earlier the better and the Rangers is going to be a late one) allow the Flames to pick players they think could fill those spots in a few years.
If Lindholm extends to remain in Calgary then the single biggest need will be a top 6 goal scoring forward preferably another right shot. Ideally a true sniper capable of being a gamebreaker even if he isn't one yet.</div></div>
You aren’t going to get a prospect of that caliber AND a 1st round pick for a pending UFA.
Teams with high first rounders are not going to spend them on a pending UFA.
CGY would be over the moon to get this type of package offered. Miller alone is worth more than pending UFA Hanifin.
Gilbert isn’t anything special and could probably be had for a mid round pick at best (3rd or 4th).
Pending UFA lindholm isn’t worth kakko, jones plus a 1st.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TkachukNorris79</b></div><div>I would agree with you however he also had a NMC last year and got a 1st with a higher cap hit and he was worse in STL last year compared to OTT this year. I think he's worth a late 1st with retention and will likely get it (he's not going to be picky about where he goes for 2 months).
If I'm Staios I stand firm at the asking price of a late 1st</div></div>
Fair, last year he didn’t enforce the NTC for playoff teams. We will see if he does this year. He definitely loved being with NYR and I’d love to have him back. But with no 2nds in the next 2/3 years, if I were Drury, I’d be hesitant to give up the 1st (just a better chance of hitting an eventual NHLer).

The 1st is good but Kakko is having a rough year and is looking more like a reclamation project then anything else, Jones and Berard have little to no value so don't add much to the trade so to get both Bjorkstrand and Gourde with that much retention you'll have to add at least one more really good piece imo.</div></div>
Berard is simply younger (still developing) version of Gourde. Gourde didn’t break through to the NHL till his mid 20s, Berard is only 21 putting up better AHL numbers than Gourde did at the same age.

Tarasenko has a full NTC so you probably won’t get a 1st. He’s probably going to force his way to his preferred team (similar to Kane, Hall, etc). From NYR you could probably get Jones and a 2nd tho.

Depends on how this season goes. If Chytil improves on this past one, NYR don’t consider. If he does the same, they may take this deal. Beck is close to NHL ready and can fill the 3c void, Farrell is meh but that CGY 1st rounder is the potential steal. CGY could lose both Hanifin and Lindholm after this year. That has a chance to be a top 10 pick if that happens.

Would never swap them, that would be an overpayment for a guy that's barely having an impact on his actual team, 3 years in.</div></div>
I get what you’re saying but you are still talking abt a 21 year old that can put up ~40 points a year. Yeah Not what you want from a #1 overall, but there is still another level that he had in the qmjhl that he hasn’t hit in the nhl. While it gets more unlikely every year that passes without hitting it, it’s still too early to write him off completely. Even if he maxes out as a 60 point forward, those are still very useful. I do get what you are saying about Smith though, which is why I used that pick as the example of one where NYR would be forced to consider the trade. They have a lot of middle level prospects already, so it would have to be quality more than quantity if they were getting rid of Laffy due to his potential.

NYR aren’t trading Laffy unless it’s an overpayment. If MTL keeps 5th overall and Smith is available, there could probably be a conversation for a swap.

NYR have enough cheap assets to fill a roster. It’s been done/proven multiple times. If you want laffy, you are going to have to grossly overpay
