Calgary Flames signed Jonathan Huberdeau (8 Years / $10,500,000 AAV)
From Ethan Hetu of ProHockeyRumors.com-very well said:
<strong>"Will this deal look the best in 2028, 2029, or 2030? No, it probably won’t. Huberdeau is 29 and isn’t getting any younger. But the Flames had a strong regular season last year, and clearly want to win a Stanley Cup in the immediate future. This contract will take Huberdeau into his late thirties. With Gaudreau and Tkachuk now gone, they needed to acquire players like Huberdeau. Once they got one, they needed to find a way to hold on to him. Now they have.
In all fairness, there is the possibility that Huberdeau could regress. But on the flip side, he could age like his former teammate, Claude Giroux, who has scored well as he’s aged and recently earned a large, multi-year contract from the Ottawa Senators despite the fact that he’ll turn 35 in January.
Any way you slice it, this is a deal the Flames simply had to make. Some might quibble about the term, the cap hit, et cetera, and that’s fair. This is a lot of money to commit to a player for a long time. But NHL teams don’t have the luxury of getting picky with their 115-point players.
Paying a little bit too much for a little bit too long is simply the nature of shopping at the top of the market in the NHL. The reality is nearly every team would rather pay a star a bit too much than have nobody worth paying. This is a big win for Calgary and extremely welcome news for a Flames fanbase that just a few weeks ago felt completely hopeless."</strong> -ProHockeyRumors.com

Ya sure, by the end of this contract it won’t look good. So what? The flames made this trade to get a star back for some stars that wanted out. They got that star locked up long term. It was either they sign this deal or rebuild. They chose the right move and signed the deal.</div></div>
The deal starts in a year. They're paying a 30 year old 10.5 million for 8 years. There is a lot of risk here that he sucks hard for the majority of this contract. I said yes in the end because they had to do it, and he is ****ing awesome. But the risk here is significant.

The winner of the Huberdeau+Weegar+Schwindt+1st/Tkachuk trade was dependent on the Flames being able to re-sign Huberdeau and Weegar. With the more important one now taken care of, Brad Treliving has done a solid job in an incredibly tough spot. And yes, this contract might hurt when Huberdeau gets older, but given that it was this vs. letting Tkachuk walk for nothing, I think the Flames would prefer the former. In short: not a great signing, but a much better outlook for a team that looked like it was collapsing into rebuild-mode 2 weeks ago.

(CGY/FLA) - Tkachuk for Huberdeau, Weegar, Schwindt
This trade is banana's. Like actual banana's. This entire offseason has been banana's.
I think NHL GMs actively read the comments on the ACGM's on this site and say "Oh, you all think you know what we're gonna do next right? Ok... predict this, you son of b*****!"
I read that as if every GM is talking in a Tony Montana style voice.
As for this trade, its banana's. Like actual banana's.

San Jose Sharks signed Kaapo Kähkönen (2 Years / $2,750,000 AAV)
I am surprised he got this much, but it's been such a weird market for goalies, it isn't crazy, just a tad higher than expected.
Kahkonen seems like he could be a good goalie, but he's a prospect project for all intents and purposes. His advanced analytics haven't been particularly great, but no goalies are in Minnesota. Goalies traditional stats are always very good, but the team defensive metrics are always incredible while the expected save percentage is so high goalies have a hard time not underperforming it.
This makes some sense as goalies have come and gone, had great numbers, then struggled elsewhere, but at the same time, this defense just doesn't seem as strong as it used to be (but their offense is way up), and they have gone through various different coaches with different styles, so you start to get the feeling that some of it may be that the shot attempt and location tracking are biased, which makes them hard to gauge.
Either way, Kahkonen is 25, had decent traditional numbers, and certainly not enough games played as an NHL goalie to come to any real conclusions about what his ceiling is. So given the Sharks are in a re-tool, finding out what they have on a 2 year deal seems like a decent enough bet. If he's terrible, he will help them get a higher pick. If he's very good, then you have a 25 year old goalie that could become your starter. No risk really, but some decent upside potential.

Thread:
(VGK/CAR) - Pacioretty, Coghlan for future considerations
This trade is proof that no matter what someone will troll vote on a trade. For this trade to be good for Vegas, Pacioretty would need to get hurt enough to massively damage his ability to be effective, but not enough to just go on permanent LTIR, and even then they had to add another player who at worst is just a 13th forward/AHL call up. Even if the odds of Coughlan becoming a significant positive value are near 0, the chances of him being a net negative are actually 0, so it's still a win to get him included.
Waddell just killing it this off-season. Getting assets for TDA, then using less than you got to get Burns to replace him is a big win. But Waddell targeting a winger on free agent frenzy day, and just side stepping the entire mess to pay no assets to get a strong winger on a reasonable cap hit with just 2 years term left is masterful.
As much as people have warned of teams getting into "CAP HELL", this is it, Vegas is there. Maybe a few teams have had to accept a little less value on trades because of cap issues, or couldn't sign a player they liked, but Vegas had to give away a very good player just to be compliant, not even to make room for an addition. So far this summer they have traded away 3 forwards, and all their reward for it is having to play the LTIR dance with Weber's contract for the next 4 years. That is brutal.

They've got 8 forwards, 3 D, and 1 goalie signed for next season, along with Ross Colton/Philippe Myers/Cal Foote's RFA rights, with $4.5M in cap space based on a $83.5M cap. Even if you sign each of those super cheap (like, to $1M cap hits) you still only have 9 F/5 D/1G and only enough money to sign 2 minimum contracts. Someone big is moving out of Tampa within the net year.
