I’m an Oilers and Puljujärvi fan and I think the Canes would be a great fit for Puljujärvi. But we’re not trading Puljujärvi because we need forward depth, we need defensive stars, and trading for Martinhook (nothing against him) would hault our search for a top-pair D-man.

Actual points are more important than expected points. Plus Barrie has a history of being a talented offensive weapon before Edmonton.

Making Sense Of The Dadonov Trade
I know my Oilers have interest in Anderson, but I cna tell you they are not trading Holloway. The only reason they'd trade a young talent is for cap space (which is why I don't understand why we're going for Anderson but whatever) so trading an NHL-ready talent who's under $1M is crazy. If you really wanna make a trade work with the Oilers I have heard that the Habs have interest in Barrie.

Very good job! I hope this works for the Oilers. Kane is exactly what we needed this season, the problem is if we sign him we're gonna be recreating the depth holes we just fixed. We may not need a replacement for Kassian if Kane comes because Niemelainen could easily be one of the best hitters in the league, but he needs to improve on his mobility. I hope he did.

My problem here is that there is no real direction. I cannot tell if you're trying to rebuild or contend. Signing Dubois at an 8x$8 is a massive overpay. As an Oilers fan I don't mind the Helleybuyck trade but I feel like it's a bit of an overpay.

I agree it's concerning that Nemo might turn out to be a Ristoleinan, but having watched him I think he has the awareness, but I think we can all agree that it's obvious he hasn't gotten used to the speeds of North American hockey. I really love him and everyone I talk to loves him, even some of my Calgary friends are excited because he'll add some more blood to the BoA. I think he can develop into a solid 3rd line defender, maybe second on a good day (or a bad day for the rest of our defenders). Plus I like using the line "we found our Nemo" so yeah I really wanna keep him around. Can't be any worse than Ceci and Keith.

I love this signing. I think the future of goaltending for my Oilers will be homegrown. It’s so difficult to find a good goalie without sacrificing our depth. That leaves only two ways of getting a goalie: free agency (which failed, we actually had the highest bid for Markstrom) or homegrown. I am very concerned by our poor goalie coaching, but we have two of the best AHL goalies right now both under 25, and now we add one of the best NCAA goalies. We’ll be fine for goaltending in a year or two. It’s the defense I am worried about. I’ve watched nearly every game this year and the vast majority of losses I can’t blame on our goalies, it’s on our defense. Our defense has improved notably under Woodcroft, but few coaches if any can turn Barrie and Ceci into competent defenders or make Keith feel like a 27yo. That said, we have quite a few defensive prospects I really like, namely Neimeleinen (Finish d-man who loves nothing more than to inflict pain) and Broberg (Star Swedish d-man who has shown great intelligence and awareness under Woodcroft).

I agree that Kassian and Barrie need to go, but you've significantly underestimated the return they could get. There's a good selection of teams who would be interested in a talented offensive defensemen like Barrie, and many happy to add gruff and grit with a guy who can also pass pretty well. I could see them each fetching a 3rd, and if you really wanna offload a cheap goalie one year removed from a Vezina vote (granted, this season has been very tough on him, his injury in October may have really changed him), then you could certainly get more than a 5th.

2. On the fairness of being given a second for a third ... you missed the part where I say "the Oilers make it to the Cup Finals".
3. Giving Caleb Jones, a young guy with a brighter future than Duncan Keith, with a conditional third for a 5.5 million bum, was outrageous.
And it happened anyway.</div></div>
Yes it was odd, but hopefully Holland learned his lesson. But here's the underlying truth about Keith's contract: if he retires with us we get a bonus next year in cap. Additionally, Keith is far more important for our NHL-ready prospect's development (most of who are defenders), whereas we have a veteran presence already for our forwards. Additionally we have no spot open for Toews, but we did for Keith.
If we do make the cup finals than I can see it happening, still highly doubt it though.

We could also get more from Kassian and Barrie, much more for the former. I agree they need to go, but let's not pretend that everybody thinks they are useless.
Also we need to keep Neimelainen. He's everything we need in a d-man, especially when playoff time comes. Kane will also like something closer to $4M, but considering the stuff around him $3M isn't outrageous.

Nobody wants Toews. Offloading him would require a massive deal. Nobody wants a 10-goal scorer at $5.25M. Blackhawks are stuck with him, but it will only be for another year.
Also, how is us giving you a third for a second fair? Then again, giving a young guy who has a much brighter future than Toews with a second round pick for a $5.25 bum (not disrespecting Toews' legacy, he's HoF for sure, but he's a bum now) is outrageous.

If we draft one of Brennan, or Coward, they will grow into good goalies in my opinion. I think Vanecek may be an option, as Washington may go for Varlamov, or Holtby. I think they will find a way around it if they trade Allen. Maybe they resign a few guys to help tank. Also, San Jose has Kahkonen, and Hill… they don’t need Reimer unless they trade Hill. With Ullmark, or Varlamov we would be a good team, but I think we could afford them. Getting rid of Barrie would be good, as that would open up 4.5M. I don’t see them waiving though… if they do, then awesome!</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Copenhagen</b></div><div>Drafting a goalie does not help with next year.
I would love Vanecek, but if I am washington, no way I am getting rid of him.
Not sure who Montreal will play in net if they trade Allen.
Reimer would leave SJ short in goalies.
I would love Ullmark, but costly and wont be able to afford one of JP or Yama and same with Semyon.</div></div>
We're honestly fine for goaltending. Skinner and Konovalov have both dominated the AHL (Konovalov also had a tremendous season in the KHL in the last season). It is very realistic that they could become an exceptional goaltending duo.
One the note of other goalies: Montreal declined our offer to include Jake Allen into the Kulak deal and Varlamov reportedly is uninterested in playing in Edmonton.
A lot of these goalie "upgrades" probably won't help in the long run. Getting a guy like Ullmark or Merzilinkis would be nice, but the package we'd have to send may do more harm than good, especially with Skinner and Konovalov in the wings. That's why I'm not too mad that we didn't draft Wallstedt. I mean, I still wish we did, but I don't see him as vital of a draft pick for us as people think.
All in all, I think this and next year will be painful and disappointing for the Oilers organization, but after that I believe we will be really good team. We have so many promising young guys I cannot wait to see in an Oilers uniform.

Couple of notes:
--Where's Neimelainen? Why get Pysyk instead?
--Getting Kuemper seems unlikely, but it's possible which is what matters. I am concerned by that contract though. 6x$6M deal for a goalie only usually works with the most elite of goalies, and I am not sure he's elite of he's just under, and I don't think he'll be the same in four years.
--I don't mind Carpenter, I can certainly grow to like him, but I don't see it as a necessary addition, whereas Foegle could really grow into something. I've really enjoyed his work ethic this year.

I'm not sure what the deal with Smith is, and I say this as both a fan of him and the Oilers. If he does return again, it'll likely be for one more season. Let's not forget he had a vezina vote last season, but I think his injury in October really changed him. I am not blind to his poor play, but I would argue most of the goals he and Koski have allowed are because of very poor defense. Skinner and Koskinen/Smith is a safer deal. If we tie ourselves down to Husso (ESPECIALLY AT $4M) then we are likely gonna have another Koskinen situation where we're paying elite money for an above average goalie at best.

I personally understand the trade for Tage Thompson, but I actually don't believe we should pursue him as an Oilers fan. If we didn't I wouldn't be mad, I'd certainly grow to like him, but I have a lot of faith in our young guys, especially Konovalov. I also believe we're undervaluing what Derek Ryan is to our team. That's not to say he's better than people say is, just to the Oilers he is important. For a depth forward he can play offense well and more importantly to the team he is elite on defense and the penalty kill.
I'm not saying the trade is fair, nor am I saying that Buffalo would do it, but I can see it, which is all that matters on this site.

Speaking of chemistry, though at the moment I agree Norris is better than Stutzle, do you think Stutzle should be on line 1?

Being stuck in LTIR all year again will prevent that for another year, so imo it's worth looking to offload his contract. And getting rid of Smith is a necessity imo, would be hard to run a Smith/Skinner combo next year.
Point is fairly taken about C. Brown, and the return would clearly need to be adjusted.
TY all for the feedback</div></div>
True.
I dunno about Smith, and the reason for that is because I became a massive Mike Smith fan last year, and everybody ignored him, so I said well they'll see this time and lo and behold he's having quite the offseason. I personally believe Koskinen and Smith are an underrated duo, they can't steal games but they rarely sell them. But with that said I recognize this season will be the last I see of at least one of them (and I do love Skinner so it's not all bad). I never made it into the NHL because I didn't have the money to take lessons and all of the hockey kids in my school were rich bullies. But I always stayed close to hockey, and a couple of months ago I realized if I was an NHL goalie that based on how I play and act in my floor hockey league I would be like Mike Smith. I am a very passionate player like Mike Smith, so I just hate to see him go out this way. What I am saying is, please acknowledge that the Koski-Smith duo isn't nearly as bad as people love to say, and I can tell you that as someone who watches them almost as much as anybody else, but also acknowledge that I am biased towards them, so take what you will.
P.S., just read your username and I will definitely use that someday.

Looking Ahead
1) If we gave that to get Connor Brown then I will personally give Holland the nastiest kiss ever.
2) Even as someone who is a Mike Smith fan I like the idea of trading him to Arizona, but that is a wild trade and very unnecessary. It's a low return for Mike Smith alone, who is not a on a bad contract, just a bad year. Add in a 3rd and a prospect and then I'd say that the future considerations better score 60 points next season. Lastly trading Klefbom is utterly unnecessary, he does not count against the cap. So that trade would not only take my kiss back from Holland, but I would probably make him kiss my fist.
4) That Husso contract is very 50/50. He way too young with a rather small sample size for us to be able to legitimately say he's worth it. He hasn't been stellar all season. I'd give him $2.5M over 2 years, otherwise let some other team get too excited about Husso and fork over a ton of money.
5) Kane is exactly what we need. The price tag is fine but we need to lock him up for 2-3 years, nothing longer as I understand his personal life is concerning, but he has "kept his nose clean" so-to-speak since joining Edmonton.

Oilers say hello to UFAs Next Season
I am sorry, but as someone who has watched every Oilers game, the Derek Ryan deal is insulting to him. He has been leading our penalty kill very well and has been producing the kind of offense you can hope for from a 4th-liner. If we are gonna trade him, we can certainly get much more than a 7th.
I also find the Seattle trade unlikely as they want picks, if we're gonna offload on them they're gonna want some picks to go with, not to mention they are giving way too little for two depth wingers, a star offensive-defensemen (who yes, sucks on D), and a prospect who will likely fill be a nice depth power forward. On that note I do find trading Benson a little too eager. He has had a lot of chemistry with McLeod, and if Benson continues to trend in the direction he is then they can make a REALLY good third line.
