Trade Brannstrom
The Canucks can't afford to do this in terms of cap space if my read is correct. I also would be hesitant to sell low on Hoglander <em>and</em> give up a third, unless they really believe in Brannstrom.

Welcome to Chicago
I can't wait for Chicago to build a juggernaut on the back of a kid from Vancouver and a bunch of cap dump picks from Vancouver. It is the most Vancouver Canucks thing I can imagine.
What can we trade to Chicago for our 2026 2nd round pick? Let's make this an annual ritual!

If Vancouver trades pettersson it will be because he refuses to sign</div></div>
That's fair. But the value of that contract in the trade was part of the uncertainty of the injury...which is kind of my main point. The basis being the Eichel trade doesn't line up because of that injury. There would likely be more teams lined up and willing to pay for Pettersson, which means there would need to be added value, likely in terms of quality. Our ownership and management in Vancouver haven't really shown a significant interest in picks (see the Hronek trade lol). So just throwing more picks into this deal, particularly picks with limited upside, just isn't going to swing it...
As someone has noted, a Tkachuk type trade seems more likely the route Vancouver would try to go if Petey wanted out next summer. Barring them being offered something similar to Pettersson (e.g. a young, elite center), which seems highly unlikely.

Realistic Petey trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kyle_Okposo_Lover</b></div><div>thank you for reading...
What would your deal be? Kasper, Edivinsson, Larkin, 3 1st and Seider? This is realistically what it would be</div></div>
A few things:
1) You haven't included any of Kasper, Edvinsson, or Seider (or Raymond) in this trade. Without one of those elite assets (or two), I think the Canucks hang up. Like, you're even putting trade protection on one of the assets in the form of a top-5 condition...you can't get quality in this case without giving some up. Which leads me to my second point...
2) You are comparing Petey to Eichel, which may be fair NOW, but you have to remember the situation when Eichel was traded: he needed neck surgery, and was going to have a procedure that had an element of uncertainty. There was a chance he never panned out for VGK. Basing a trade for Petey on that misses the context, aka the horrible position Buffalo was trading from given Eichel's condition and the lack of interested suitors.

Trading Podkolzin for a fourth liner. That is bad asset management. He had a down year in a SUPER chaotic situation on a poorly built team. He has the potential to be a two-way beast. We have to think bigger picture, even if he doesn't pan out. McBain may have a higher floor, but if Podk hits, you lose so much value.

Helping Non-Flyers Fans
Thanks for such an interesting post! I have a few thoughts reflecting on how you're valuing Flyers players:
1) I think the Konecny value is probably okay, assuming those firsts are from a team that isn't going to be in the lottery anytime during those years. I doubt a team that is on the edge of contention is making a trade like that.
2) I definitely understand the rationale for the value of Laughton. I think the fact that he hasn't been traded is probably an indication that other teams won't pay what the Flyers want for him. A 1st and a 2nd are really steep for a 3rd line centre, unless you're getting some good cap benefits (e.g. salary retention or a cap dump). Colorado got a pretty good one for a 2nd this offseason.
3) I don't know if I see them getting that value for Hart. Goalies have fickle value, even young up-and-comers. They are kind of like RBs in football - I don't necessarily agree with this valuation, but that seems to be what is happening.
4) The untouchables list is kind of sad in my opinion as a fan of a team in the West. Maybe that speaks to the need to rebuild the system? I just don't really see any of those guys in a class where they should be untouchable, and I doubt a team would overpay to the extent you are probably thinking.

Pettersson
As a Canucks fan, I love watching other Canucks fans on here absolutely LOSE their crap over the thought Petey may request out. He did essentially say he wants to see how the team is doing before he signs, and I think we need to give him more credit; he isn't stupid. If I was a player of his calibre on the Canucks, and watched the absolute tire fire that has been the asset management and mediocrity of the Canucks, I may not want to stay. And I'm from BC.
Ultimately, I think he does stay, but people need to prepare themselves for a reality where he doesn't. He wants to win - it will take more than a good winger to satisfy him. He isn't stupid. If he leaves, we should feel betrayed by the team, not Petey. Him leaving would be him making the decision we all should have as fans like 2-3 years ago...
Anyways, it is equally funny to watch fans on here make proposals for him that don't really include anything tangible. Some first round picks that would be 15-20 and a decent proposect of young player likely won't get it done. You will have competition. For CBJ if the offer doesn't include one of Johnson/Fantilli, I don't see the Canucks doing it.
If you're answer is, 'no! Those guys could be 1Cs!' Exactly. You're accelerating your timeline to grab and elite 1C who has shown he can put up 100 points and get Selke votes. You have to give to get, even in this fantasy play ground.

Which I appreciate - being bad sucks. I'm happy to see SJ is at least doing a proper rebuild. So having some fun is great.
But as others have said, without Will Smith or Eklund, I don't see this going anywhere. Those firsts aren't going to help the Canucks for a while since one is going to be late, and the other is two years out.
As a Canucks fan, I would say - though it sucks - sticking it out being bad for a few more years is likely the best route. Trying to shortcut will cost you some elite young players most likely...don't be like us :)

Hoglander's progression in Abby (I went to a few games in season and during the playoffs) was awesome, he looks like he has enough to stick and be effective. His willingness to learn alone says a lot.
I don't get how Canucks fans are so down on him and Podkolzin after one year. They are young players, figuring it out. Both have some great tools, and the brains and drive to make them work. If the Canucks can help them figure it out this year, it would be a massive boon to their lineup and cap situation.

I think you got the number both in terms of year and cap hit right. I could definitely see Petey signing for 5, taking him to approximately 30 at the end of the contract in time for one last pay day when the cap is up a bunch.

Even if the Blues were going to trade Thomas, I think there would need to be more quality from the Habs. This kind of applies to acquiring any center for the Habs. You're going to have to give up something more solidly 'top end' than a 2025 pick.
That's why I think they need another year at least of accumulating elite assets. Then you can go out and spend one or two once you know where each of them fits and how you feel about them as an organization.

Nope. The 1st would probably be late. Beecher <em>may</em> have a shot at the NHL. Carlo is a 3-5 RHD. Lysell is a wing prospect, which Van has lots of...and Vancouver is eating cap.
This feels like the equivalent of Klimovich, Ian Cole, Lekkerimaki, and a 1st for Pasta, and Boston eats like $4m of his cap.

Dallas isn't trading Oettinger barring some kind of major organizational shift. He is a young, star goaltender for a team with a lot of young talent and a large contention window...and if they were, I doubt that package would get him.

ELIAS PETTERSSON Big Deal
I don't see a world where Pettersson is traded to the Habs and ONE of Caufield, Suzuki, Slaf, and Reinbacher aren't in the package. And yeah, I know, that wouldn't make sense for the Habs...but that's kind of the point, isn't it? This trade wouldn't make sense for the Canucks, unless they had certainty on the position and potential players at those picks.
If Pettersson is being traded and this is the best offer Montreal has, I can see another team swooping in with at least one or two really high quality assets that are more certain than any of these pieces right now.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Just_A_Guess</b></div><div>Finely worded comment except the bias is still evident (yes we all have a bias). Plenty of VAN fans overvalue their assets and feel MTL assets are worthless. But this goes for all fan bases. Case and point, Garland has absolutely no value to me and I’d much rather have Anderson.
EP is elite, I’m not arguing that. The price is high, and this offer doesn’t get him. But to devalue the pieces offered because you highly value what you have isn’t a nonbias either.
VAN should expect a high return, no doubt. MTL shouldn’t be considering a move of this magnitude for another season anyway so not really sure why there are so many on here honestly. We won’t be willing to move some of the specific pieces that should be requested and y’all won’t accept the alterations we would want to make do to the quality/quantity debate. No we wouldn’t be able to send 50 2nds to equate the proper value but we wouldn’t be very wise to give up the talented young core we have either.
Short story long this is all a moot point because neither team would likely be comfortable making a deal involving EP due to the magnitude and the price tag.</div></div>
I appreciate this! Thanks for a great response.
I am fully aware of my bias, but that is also kind of my point. As a Canucks fan, I see a lot of these and they are often kind of insulting as someone who watches the wizardry of Pettersson on a consistent basis.
And I agree with you: I don't know if trading for Petey, given the acquisition and cap cost, would make sense for MTL at this stage. Trading a high value, young asset like Caufield, Suzuki, Slaf, Reinbacher likely isn't 'the move' right now. Maybe in a 18-24 months after they've built up a greater saturation of talent, and then can make the move as more of a 'finishing piece' in building a contender. Otherwise you may end up in the mushy middle with some good young players, but not a lot coming up behind them...hmmm, sounds familiar...

I am constantly amazed at how much Habs fans seem to devalue Pettersson on here or seem to value their own assets too highly in their Pettersson proposals. As a Canucks fan, I'm not surprised that the ACGM vultures are circling; I am worried that Pettersson is going to pull a Tkachuk, after all, why wouldn't he? Vancouver has been a trash fire in terms of organizational competency and on ice product for a decade. But to think that you're going to get one of the elite players in the NHL who probably comps similar to someone like Pavel Datsyuk (an elite 1C who gets Selke consideration) for a cap dump, top-four defensemen and a lottery ticket is wild.
If a Canucks fan offered Garland (who I consider better value than Anderson), D Elias Pettersson (probably won't be at Guhle's level, but has a shot at top 4 given his progression this year), and a 1st (a lottery ticket...) for someone like Suzuki or Caufield (neither of whom are in Pettersson's tier at this point, I would argue), they would get ripped apart...

My main point - the Canucks were a basement team selling to a team trying to make the playoffs - has been said, but I think it is worth emphasizing the overarching fact behind this argument, and likely so much of the resistance you are encountering: context matters. You may be correct about some facts - for example, I don't know enough about McBain to have an opinion - but the Coyotes build timeline is key context; it doesn't make sense for that kind of team to trade the high value draft capital for a player who is 27 or 28 and likely a few years from decline, even if they can negotiate beforehand.
Also, just so everyone is clear on the Horvat extension, that happened nearly a week after he was traded. It wasn't pre-negotiated. So using that as an example here of a sign-and-trade, if that's what is happening, doesn't really work.

This, again, comes down to cap for the Canucks. They aren't a team that can afford to run a 21-man roster - injuries, with all the travel out West, always bite them.
I don't understand the obsession with trading DeSmith to the Canucks. Nor do I understand why the Habs want to trade him now. Wait until a goalie gets hurt in the first month, then extract a better asset...
