Leafs TDL
Would be a BAD move for Seattle. Let's say Nylander signs for $10M.
McCann scored 40 goals last season (same as Nylander), is on pace for 37 this year (just a few shy of Nylander), and makes just $5M for 3 more seasons!
Adam Larsson has 1 more year at $4M and is the kind of D man that IF they decided to move at the deadline would easily get a 1st + an A level prospect.
Firkus, while unproven at the pro level, is early 2nd round pick that's destroying the WHL right now with nearly a 2 points per game pace.
And Toronto ALSO gets a 1st rounder that will most definitely be a lottery pick? Nah.
Nylander is one of the best in the game but Seattle would do so much better for the franchise by moving these pieces separately if that's what they wanted.

Not sure we need to sign an entire 4th line, and OTT can find a much better way to spend $6M than on the declining Tyler Bertuzzi... for FIVE SEASONS???

Garland is on pace for what will be his worst NHL season yet and has another two years remaining at $5M. I'm pretty confident he would clear waivers right now.
OTTAWA declines.

Kubalik was strictly to balance out the cap exchange and he's an easy piece to move at the deadline for a pick. I could see Pinto being required instead of OR in addition to Boucher. Fair point.

We can't make the money work unless we're sending Norris with Chabot, and at that point you aren't giving up Greig and Pinto because you'll end up with a stellar top 6 and a gong show for a bottom 6, which is exactly why EDM is tanking so badly. I could see adding Pinto to the deal and the '24 DET 1st + '24 OTT 2nd + '25 OTT 3rd ... and yeah, I'd throw in the never healthy Boucher too, why not.

Thank you for this. I had always assumed that any contract after the final year of an ELC would require waivers. Much appreciated and a VERY big relief.

I don't want Weegar until he's 37 either. Ha. I'd prefer to get back upcoming UFA Dylan Demelo.
Not as flashy but a top 4 RHD who plays a simple game, wanted to stay in Ottawa, and we can sign him to a 4 year deal for 2/3 what Weegar costs.

Bouchard Deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div> Intergalactically HORRIBLE idea for the Oilers. The only circumstance under which this idea might arguably make some sense is if this deal happened at the trade deadline and Edmonton were mathematically out of the playoffs.</div></div>
Even if they're out of the playoffs there's no way they'd give up Bouchard for or two late firsts that won't be NHL'ers for years IF EVER.
Bouchard is a 24 year old 10th OA RHD and is the only blue liner putting up points for them.

2025-26 Just to show how manageable it is
When skipping a full season on here there are so many questions I could ask, but I'll only ask this one: are we carrying 3 goalies in 24-25?
I ask because Korpisola and Forsberg will still be under contract and Mads Sogaard would require waivers, and we all know he wouldn't clear.

I'm not against moving Chabot but I'm not sure this is the return I want.
Sogaard would need to clear waivers next season, will we carry 3 goalies?
Hamonic has a NMC, so where is he? If you sent him down... you can't.
Next season Sanderson's new deal kicks in, which maybe we can fit with Kubalik and Tarasenko coming off the books but that leaves our forward group very thin with no money for UFAs.

Weever's contract runs until he's 37 years old. That's a big yikes for me.
If our window was closing and we needed to win a cup in the next 2 years before it all fell apart... maybe... but not now.
If I'm giving up Chabot and a 1st and 2nd... I'd rather be talking to TBL about Cernak and seeing what we'd need to add.

If MacKenzie Weegar will waive his NTC for Ottawa
Calgary would not attach a 1st and Weegar's contract ends when he's 37 years old. This trade works well for neither team.

Was beaten to it by <a href="/users/Xspyrit" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Xspyrit</a> - give OTT a 5th for Kubalik, let him pot some goals for you then move him for a higher pick at the deadline. Nothing but gain on that move.

JUST DO IT
I agree that Kubalik is the player you move but OTT should get back a 4th or b prospect. Kubalik is a very useful middle 6, two-way player, that easily snags a 3rd at the deadline if he isn't extended.

Summer of Pierre
If you aren't going to just acquire a pick for Kubalik then you have to take a prospect or player that will cost you nothing in cap if they're in the AHL. Robinson would still cost us roughly 700K in cap which means we can't carry a 13th fwd. He's not worth it. Take a b prospect or a 4th rounder instead and have Smejkal in the line up (save MacEwen for nights you need extra physicality).

Better defensively
Ignoring the Tarasenko NTC issue and simply pointing out that, even after sending Savoie down to the AHL, this deal would put Ottawa OVER the cap and they'd still have no Pinto.
