<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheBoyDuddus</b></div><div>All three pieces in the Florida trades have question marks. Ekblad is amazing but rarely healthy for long stretches. Knight’s been relegated the the minors where his numbers haven’t been great. Lundell has seen his numbers regress each season as well.
Would be tough to give up on two known and proven commodities for question marks, albeit good ones, along with a late 1st and 3rd.
NJ and WSH reject those other two trades, not much to unpack there.</div></div>
NOT TO MENTION that Brady has 4 years remaining on a very reasonable contract for what he brings to a team. Whereas Ekblad, who is supposed to be the nugget in Ottawa's return, is in the final year of his deal and IF he's willing to sign with Ottawa he'd likely want serious term even though he'll be 29 years old. If Ekblad ISN'T willing to sign with Ottawa then they need to move him at the deadline and or watch him walk for nothing. It's just a god awful trade for Ottawa - no way around it.

Brady Tkachuk isn't going anywhere. And if he REQUESTED to be traded OTT would have to do better than this with the return.
Both WSH and NJD decline.

That OTT trade is absolutely ridiculous. They'd turn it down if Tkachuk was the only piece coming back to you, let alone adding MORE to your end of the deal.
Horrible trade for OTT. Declined.

One Big Move Two Gambles
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Borocop</b></div><div>Yeah if your centres are Norris Pinto Stutzle it will be fine, no need for JGP. If the top 9 Cs though are a combination of Stutzle Pinto and Greig/Ostapchuk (which is something that could happen), with all due respect to those guys but thats not good enough to be an actual playoff team imo. Pinto could be good at 2C if we add a winger to compliment him and Batherson, and Greig/ZO might be good enough to slot into 3C in a pinch (I think theyre both better suited for the wing though), but that is a ton of inexperience down the middle. My only issue is that if the isles are willing to eat like 40% of his contract, more teams are probably going to be in on him and it'll drive the return up for picks/pieces that were pretty short on. I think if we bridge pinto for 2 years we could easily fit JGP in 5m and maybe get a pick with him to boot</div></div>
Obviously it would depend on all the other moves that OTT makes but Pageau at $4.25M next season means there's not much left over to fix our bigger concerns - and I say bigger because scoring hasn't been our problem, we're ranked 15th in GF. Yes, Pageau would help our PK, but even our issue PK woes are primarily the D, our forwards have been pretty decent on the kill with the exception of the odd Stutzle gaff.
If we only can make one addition in that price range going after DeMelo would make a far bigger difference than Pageau.

One Big Move Two Gambles
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Borocop</b></div><div>tbf only 3 of those guys are actual NHL centers at this point and Norris is unpredictable at best. Depending on what we get for Chychrun & what the norris situation looks like, its well withing the range of outcomes that we get JGP as a 3C</div></div>
I agree that Norris' health makes slotting him in a little unpredictable, but Norris, Stutzle, Pinto and (4th line) Kastelic are all legit NHL pivots. Greig could easily play that 3rd line pivot spot. He's 42.7% in FOW and if given decent wingers could handle being moved over. Ostapchuk is another bottom 6 option if he has support and, while his FOW% wasn't very great for Ohio State, Halliday could be another pleasant surprise. Even if Norris isn't ready to go in September Ottawa taking JGP back with anything less than 40% retained would be foolish.

Off season strategy
I'd say the price on Mangiapane is fair. The issue for me is that the deal eats much of our cap without addressing our most pressing needs.
Even if we'd gotten average goaltending this season OTT would be in the playoff mix. That needs to be addressed.
Buying out Hamonic and finding a solid 2nd pairing RHD would also take priority over a left shot fwd.

Without Bunting, move Crookshank up and let Ostapchuk, Jarventie and Halliday know they're battling for that 4th line spot.

Pretty sure a lot of teams will be targeting the solid RHDs that are available.

This does very little for Ottawa. It adds ANOTHER expensive, unsuccessful goalie and saves us nothing in cap space.

If Ottawa was looking to move Brady or he was asking for a trade then that would be an overpay. Since neither of those is true, I'm guessing Ottawa doesn't accept.
It's a hell of an offer, but it doesn't make them better now, and might never. All those 1st would be outside the top 10 ...and Brady Tkachuk is Brady Tkachuk.
