Can’t compare Katchouk‘s contract with Joseph’s, he had zero NHL games when he got it… I mean come on… let’s be at least a bit down to earth
And Joseph’s contract is far from awful… I mean ES defense, ES offense, PK, speed, forecheck… brings some good stuff… wouldn’t have been overpaid at all based on his 2021-22 season
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>I mean, it's what, 750-800K per goal last year? And it's not like Joseph is some defensive nightmare either...</div></div>
Oh yeah because hockey players are paid based on the goals they scored last season… and Joseph PK metrics are always among the top of the league

Sens don’t even need Konecny right now. They have 13 players who need PP time and don’t even have cap space.
Lowering the team support quality (players like Brannstrom, Kubalik/Joseph) and good futures (1st, 2nd/Thomson) to make that move would be stupid. Wait next summer, let Tarasenko walk (and Kubalik if he’s still there) and invest on the best forward you could get (which should be 6-7 if they kept Joseph and Brannstrom)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMDannyB</b></div><div>I appreciate you guys covering everything I usually have to explain to Sens fans lol. I can understand if Konecny returns a bit more than this in a trade, but adding Pinto is ridiculous.
In this trade, Philly is getting a 1st round pick likely between 13-20th overall, a legit #4D in Branny (worth a 2nd), a 20 goal UFA in Kubalik who they can easily get a 2nd for at the deadline, a young nhl ready D in Lassi, and an overpaid bottom 6er in Joseph who has slight negative value.
Saying Ottawa adds a 2nd here is fair, or someone like Boucher (who has ties to Philly). But add Pinto and you still don't think Philly does it? That's bananas.
You could offer me Konecny for 2 more years for Pinto (4 more years of team control) straight up and I probably wouldn't do it.

Giving Chychrun 8.5 would be a massive mistake. Even if he plays the full 164 games over the next two seasons and gets 65 points each year I'd still only give him 7.5.

Branny doesn’t have negative value. If there’s a player that might have to come with a pick it’ll be Joseph.

McLeod is not the best comparable because he's a year older (closer to UFA) and has 2 NHL seasons while Pinto has one.
McLeod got a 2 years extension, so Pinto's would be quite cheaper on a 1 year
They had a similar PPG last season (Pinto got to play with two first liners and had 168 minutes of PP time) while McLeod's possession and defensive metrics were very good. Plus Pinto has no arbitration rights.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sens65</b></div><div>He was on track for 26 points in a down year, and is very good at carrying the puck up the ice and penalty killing.</div></div>
Exactly, don't listen to the noise, Joseph is not a bad player at all. Defensive forwards who excel on the PK are not supposed to produce 50 pts per season (or they'd be paid a lot more than 2.95 AAV)
26 pts pace in a down year, 36 pts pace the year before (30 pts in 69 GP, all at ES or on the PK), he's also a pretty good forechecker
I trust that Dorion can make the right decision and trade Kubalik instead (who is a better scorer but UFA-to-be, really not as good defensively and would need big PP minutes, which we don't have)
This is a good picture of Joseph's game, and his EV production can vary from year to year

Joseph is still owed $9M+ over 3 years I wouldn’t touch him without at minimum a 2nd and a prospect coming back our away.</div></div>
$9 million over 3 years sounds like a terrible contract but when you realize that Joseph is at worst a $2 million player and probably a $2.5 million player, its not that bad at all. The Sens would love to keep him if they could stay under the cap.

Think of the players Ottawa traded a first for while trying to exit their rebuild, Duchene, DeBrincat, Chychrun. Now look at what you’re offering Arizona, a pending UFA streaky goal scorer, a cap dump that probably costs at least a 2nd to move, and a smaller puck moving defenseman with good underlying numbers but hasn’t broken out. Come on now, what there says a 1st and a 2nd?

Why trade Kubalik if you’re going to bring a more expensive and worse player in Laughton?
And doubt the Coyotes would go for that. They can afford to spend some picks but would they want to « accelerate » their rebuild like that? Might as well spend these picks on one bigger player
People won’t know but yes Brannstrom and Kubalik with his contract are quite valuable. Joseph for the same reason is not but if you have the cap, he’s still going to improve your bottom-6 and particularly your 1st PK unit

Brannstrom will most likely be traded for a young forward to free up a spot for Kleven in the near future. RHD Thomson already has no spot on the team, Sens are not going to spend a pick on Savard

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TCMonkey</b></div><div>Joseph will certainly bounce back (hate the idea of PAYING to ship him somewhere just because he had a down year).</div></div>
Me too, I am tired to bleed assets all over the place. We spent 2nd + 3rd + 4th + 7th to get rid of Zaitsev and Murray (75% only!) contracts. We might have downgraded a 7th OA pick considerably with the DeBrincat saga, same as we did back then with Duchene (4th OA -> 19th OA). I could go on and on
Plus, we acquired Joseph for Nick Paul who is recognized around the league as a pretty good defensive forward good for 30+ pts at ES
I agree that Smejkal, Crookshank and maybe Ostapchuk will see some games, which is why we don't need Motte. We're so close to the cap anyway. If we could get Suter for cheap, that'd be great though but then even more gymnastic would be needed
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TCMonkey</b></div><div>I'm also big on Kleven and feel that pairing him with Hamonic is the reason Hamonic is here. I don't expect him to have the play-driving of Brannstrom this season, but I also feel we have that covered with our top 3 D men and that Kleven is better suited for what we lack than Brannstrom is. Barring injuries on our D core there's no chance Brannstrom is getting PP time.</div></div>
It's not really missing Brannstrom play driving that I am worried about. Hamonic is not that good anymore. He has a huge heart and leaves it all out on the ice but he was carried by Sanderson last season. That could put Kleven in trouble this season as he's no Jake. I would rather let Kleven develop a little bit more in the AHL this season, like some sort of safe approach. I think that pairing would get caved in, opposedly to Brannstrom-Zub who are fantastic together

Sanderson-JBD

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TCMonkey</b></div><div>I suppose if we just move Joseph (which would sadly cost us more than the OG post is indicating) we could still do Pinto (1x $2M) and have just under $2M to sign Suter.
if we can avoid significant injuries this season and Korpisalo is anywhere near half decent, this team has a legit shot at itop 3 of the Atlantic.</div></div>
I don't think it would cost more than what is proposed here but at the same time, Dorion always paint himself in a corner dealing from a position of weakness... so I have no idea how it will play out
I think Pinto will be signed to a cheap 1 year bridge. Look at Dellandrea, signed for 900 000$ and had more ES points than Pinto
I am hopeful regarding Korpisalo. I didn't realize at first but his hip surgery was in March 2022 so he only played one season after that. There's a good chance he is going to be the goalie he was this season going forward

I agree that the likely scenario is Jospeh being packaged with Thompson to get cap compliant. Not sure Vegas is it..... but it is hard not to see that as the path.
The thing that sucks is Jospeh is a great 3rd line player - just overpaid by about $1 million imo, and will be missed on that roster. Brings a certain something to the lineup.
I respect Dorion's going for it here with the Tarasenko signing, but I still wonder if bringing in Tatar (who would have been less money) would have brought similar results..... not as good offensively, but underrated defensively.
Conjecture now.....
