There is no way the Avs do this. If the retention made both goalies the same price… the answer is still probably no.
We didn’t sign Darcy because he cost too much and we thought he would decline with age. Nothing has changed in that equation. We sure as hell ain’t paying an additional 1.5m for the privilege.

Think you are a little light on Ned, Rants, Mitts and possibly Kovalenko but you might still be ok if the cap increases to 92-94 mil as projected

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>I wouldn't call them fine by any means but the sitution is nowhere near as bad as some of the vultures on here like to make out. Probably a little light on Rants there and also Ned but I think the cap probably increases by at least 4 mil for this particular season if not more given the predicted rise coming. The Avs are very much going to have to rely on the rental situation, cheap contracts in the bottom order and/or developing young players on ELCs (something historically they haven't been great at). The issue with the rental scenario being used constantly is the draining of the pool of youngsters vis a vis having no draft picks, and their scouting will also have to improve to find gems in the lower rounds.</div></div>
They still have Gulyayev & Ritchie as top prospects. The Avs are in a great position for a few more years minimum. This is what a dynasty looks like. It will have been six years of contending after this season; I count 18-19 as Year1. Avs 1.0 had nine contending years.

Other options - Brossoit from Winnipeg, Father Finn as a gamble from Carolina.</div></div>
You really think Brossoit could be a starter for the Avs with his age and all? I think I like Kahkonen best, then Ned. By Father Finn I assume you mean Raanta? In that case, no thanks.

If Georgiev blows it
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>I think the second rounder being late and making it basically a full round step down is probably too much. If it were the Anaheim 2nd rounder then I'd probably consider it, with it being much of a muchness this year after Celebrini and maybe a handful of others) from probably 15 through to about pick 40. They'd maybe still have a shot at drafting Sennecke (my personal choice - seems to be ranked anywhere from about 19th to not in the top 40 so obviously pretty divisive) to keep building on his chemistry with Ritchie (and yes he'd definitely be off limits in most scenarios including this one) or at least a higher chance guy who might come through in the future. Looking at Sundestrom having arb rights is also possibly an issue. Not sure he'll be as low as 1.5 when currently on 1.8 even though he's regressed somewhat statistically. Even after all that I'm still not sure Gibson is the answer.
On the subject of the Mitts deal I think he may get lower term, lower cap hit and bank on himself adapting to the Avs game and earning a better deal later. Might also allow them to keep Trenin and/or Drouin somehow.</div></div>
If it's the Anaheim 2nd then there is no reason for Anaheim to consider the trade as only moving up ~10 spots isn't even worth the retention on Gibson for three seasons.

McMichael is 23 has one 30 pt season. COL walked from a guy better than him in Newhook to get Colton. Nobody pretends to be an expert but I can guarantee that Cristal isn’t on ANYBODY’s top 10 or Top 20 prospects in the league list. Every team in the league has a Cristal like prospect, got news for you overage guys should dominate in their d+1 year. Tell me don’t think the Cristal could make the Avs top 6 next season? You know the answer is no, so he has no value next year for COL. The 16th pick in the first round this year, so you think COL cares about that not really. I’m all for discussing out of the box ideas, but for COL to trade a top 15 player it has to be compelling, it has to drastically improve an area of need. I mean come on bro you cap dumped your back up goalie, didn’t even include your best forward prospect then tried to justify it by adding in 2 mid round 1st. It’s ALL quantity over quality.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>brady_t12</b></div><div>Suggesting this offer doesn't have enough quality is wrong. McMichael is a young second line center coming off his ELC, Cristall is a recent 2nd round pick that just tore up the WHL. On top of that, you're getting TWO first round picks that are premium assets in this league, especially considering the caps just squeaked into the playoffs so that 2025 first could easily be a lottery pick and the 2024 is 17th overall I believe. Kuemper is almost a cap dump at this point, but the combination of miscellaneous draft picks easily cover that cost. Just because you don't know about the pieces coming back doesn't mean they aren't quality. Just because there's a high quantity of pieces doesn't mean there's not quality in that package. If you're gonna respond to a post, at least think about it first.</div></div>
McMichael isn’t a 2c that’s wishful thinking. He’s 23 with one ok season. Cristal is a dude COL passed on TWICE. So the. You had a bunch of word salad nonsense and try to justify 2 first round picks both being 16 or later and two second round picks (who cares) for a guy that is almost a lock for 40 goals and 100pts. Yeah it’s a lot of quantity over quality. I wouldn’t trade Rantanen for a top 5 pick and elite prospect and another first round pick. The offer sucks.

If Georgiev blows it

Winnipeg's scouting report on him clearly drilled down on that weakness. Not saying all of them were his fault, but the poor guy looks completely cooked out there.
For as bad as Gibsons stats have been the last few years, I believe he would have fared a lot better in that game, he's much more active/aggressive with his stick to prevent cross crease passes (Georgiev got burner 2 or 3 times by this) and he usually gets the first save buying his defense time to bail him out (Anaheims just hasn't) which isn't what Georgiev was able to do last night. Yeah, the defense was sloppy, but he needs to be making that first save and he just isn't.
With regards to the trade, you guys don't have much in the way of assets to work with, and a 2nd round pick is coming back. If Ritchie is off limits then you're talking about 1sts, and I don't think any team who has a goalie is going to be interested in waiting three seasons for that pick to come through. Behrens and Gulyayev are of no interest to us, and other prospects like Olausson etc just don't look like they're going to do anything at the NHL level.
Plus, you guys aren't the only ones in the market, NJ, Buffalo, maybe Ottawa, LA are all looking for goalies this off-season.</div></div>
Saying Gibson would have been better than Georgiev last night isn’t saying much.
I wouldn’t be paying premium assets to pay John Gibson $5M for the next 3 seasons.

It isn't that Georgie has been really bad, just average, as has been the defensive play in front of him and average doesn't win cups, and I've been defending him for much of the season (more than his actual D have!) He just never looks like he's going to steal one for you which is what you need from any goalie at some point during the season. When you put 6 past Hellebuyck, you have to expect the goalie to pull off one or two of the big stops that give you the win, not just be average. Can't see CH having another game like that (and it's not like he actually played badly either) in the series and it could be a 4-0 whitewash.
As for the trade, not sure about the Avs giving up that first round pick tbh. The parts may make sense in some respects but I think the Avs decline.</div></div>

I think it comes down to how much COL will be able to pay him</div></div>
What assets? Rantanen is a top 15 player in the league. No lottery picks, no absolute phenom prospect, this is a whole lot of quantity and not a lot of quality. This is a really easy no from COL.
