You didnt. What aren't you following.
What would you give up for a ppg player making 9 mil?
Probably costs you multiple 1sts and some really good assets.
So to get to a JT trade what is the cost of that extra 2mil over what you would want to pay a player like that? Mayybe you discount the trade with a 2nd. You're not giving up surplus assets to trade a ppg player because they cost 2 mil more than what you'd like.

He was below a PPG for like 4 of the last 5 on an offensive heavy team. So yes, he has positive value on another team but negative on the leafs. PPG players now a day get like 7-9. not 11 or at 32 years old</div></div>
Still not a negative asset. He isn't signed to an insanely long term.
2 mil in cap space might cost you a 2nd, but a ppg player costs you multiple 1sts
What are you confused about?

Ppg player gets traded as a cap dump. Seriously do you hear yourself?
Is he getting paid a bit much sure but you discount the return a bit not make it a complete cap dump

Mangiapane and amirov are both lefties. Your net change in lefty wingers would be zero. What’s your point here?
The flames would be getting basically 2 1sts and a 2nd for a 40 ish point winger, a very useful one. That’s a massive overpay for the vast majority of players in the league.

i get moving rielly takes away a puck mover on the back end, but adding better defenders means we probably spend even less time back there. This part is debatable, i get where you're coming from. Puck mover to engage the forwards vs improving the ability to stop the attack is a good debate.
Your second part about adding offense makes no sense. You're completely exaggerating that it cant be rationally argued, it can be rationally argued for absolutely any team out there, and the "insiders" have rumoured about adding a top 6 fwd addition to the leafs for over a month.

I could be wrong, but Mo / Forsberg seems like bang on value to me. Not making sense for nashville would be understandable
Ekholm for 1st hallander and abramov is pretty close to the muzz trade, which elliotte said they are looking for
is the value just off on the retention? that's an easy fix.

Ek and Forsberg
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div><a href="/users/Zmach" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Zmach</a> 's implied conclusion is 100% accurate: you've added offense to a team which is already too much offensively for most teams in the NHL, but you've subtracted substantially from a defense that doesn't impress too many observers as a playoff defense. But take out Forsberg, Reilly and the Ekholm retention and the exchange makes sense.</div></div>
Rielly is the flashy name on defense, and gets points, absolutely elite offensive dman, but ekholm is unquestionably better defensively than Rielly. Figured improving the defensive play of the defense while sacrificing some of Mo's offensive made sense if you can also get forsberg back.
I wasnt sure if the trade made sense for nashville, but If the sticking point is cost to retain that can be solved.

Personally I’d prefer Forsberg than Nylander if I’m trying to win the cup - but I think Nash adds to the leafs to return due to age/ contract.</div></div>
if you look at dubas' moves it's pretty easy to tell he views winning the cup as a probability game, and getting multiple kicks at the can over more years is more important than a short sighted move.

giving up way too much here. Eklhom is a really good player, but i'd be looking at a return similar to muzzin, which means you might get one of kerfoot/dermott/lilly plus the pick and hallander, but youre not getting all 3 of those guys, and then there's implications for the expansion draft, which means it's a lot to give up for a rental.
lilly isnt just a sweetener. you never hear that out of guys like cal foote or brannstrom that were drafted around him and have similar development paths.

Stop using +/- as a relevant stat. It's like trying to judge your speed, when a speedometer is available, by counting the number of light posts you pass while half of them are hidden by trees.
Montour had a GF differential of +9 at 5v5, while riding a 103.6 PDO, and getting out chanced by every single metric available, all while performing worse relative to his teammates.

He's also not Brent Burns. Burns had some success as a forward because he has a lethal shot, and paired very well with a generational playmaker.
Your idea takes a No. 1 dman and turns him into K. Kapanen pretty well. That seems like a pretty big loss.</div></div>
fair point. Just trying to downplay some of Mo's defensive issues while still giving him opportunities on offense. It's clearly not a popular idea, which I completely get, I like Mo's game overall and it's obviously a massive risk when Mo is a huge part of the d core and plays a ton of minutes.
The only posters I disagree with are the ones that say Mo is very good defensively. He's not, that's not his strength and never has been. He's still a very good defenseman.

yes you're right his playing partners historically haven't helped, but a lot of the information out there takes into account playing partners, and Reilly has consistently been poor defensively, even relative to his partners.
Also the stats I quoted are from this year, playing with brodie.
The idea to move Mo up may not be a good one, that's fine, but it's really hard to make an argument mo is very good defensively.

very good point about his transition play, and there would obviously be a drop off to lehtonen or sandin, by how much who knows, both those guys are pretty decent with the puck,
