Leafs decline because they aren't rebuilding.
This is just an absurd counter proposal</div></div>
Ledge is 100% correct here. The package for Willy isn't terrible by any stretch. But it is not enough for the Leafs to pull the trigger on it. That counter proposal doesn't even come close to the offer the OP made. 1st + good defensive prospect + 3rd for a pending UFA super star. It's weak but not abysmal.
Robertson for Keller (50%) retained for 5 years is so crazy. Such a bad example to prove your point.

Off Season with Trouba

Hope they extend him cheap come Jan 1st but I doubt it</div></div>
Keefe gave some good praise to Gus last year also. He said he just oozed with confidence. I just thought Dubas put Keefe and Gus in a bad spot with the trade. We had 8 legit full time NHL dmen and Timmins on top of that. I understand wanting to have depth but it can be a bit detrimental if you go too crazy. I thought Gus was 1 dmen too many.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rags21</b></div><div>Lindgren could force himself up to $6m and they would still have enough cap. Kakko might be forced to accept his QO of $2.4m and Schneider won’t get over $2m
The big question mark is Gus who might price himself out, but Jones has proved a decent replacement. And if cap space is needed, goodrow is the first one gone</div></div>
I thought Gus showed a lot with the Leafs last year. We had 9 NHL dmen after the deadline though so he was in and out of the lineup. I was surprised he only signed for 800k after the year he had last year. Glad he is showing well with New York. I really liked that signing for them when it was made.

Fair enough! I assume Lindgren gets an increase. Maybe a Ryan Graves type contract? 4.5m x 6 years? I can see him pushing 5m a year also.
But if you guys think the cap will be fine next year, with Trouba, then fair enough!
We can revisit this after the playoffs. If New York and Toronto both flop again, I can see some bigger changes happening.

Leafs can afford it with Klingberg on LTIR. We will know this week if Klingberg gets surgery or not. I expect yes and in that case his cap hit is gone.

Off Season with Trouba
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>If he's good, then why is NY going to trade their captain, for FC nonetheless? The Rangers are every bit as competitive, arguably more than the Leafs are, and the expectations are sky-high as well. Unless Schneider is all of a sudden requiring 8M on his next contract, I don't see a scenario where they would need to make a move like this.</div></div>
New York already has 72m locked up next year in 13 players. They cap situation is VERY tight. Not sure they do this, but it is an option they would have to explore. They still have a nice right side without Trouba and they can get a cheaper piece to fill out that right side. And yes New York is super competitive. Tampa was very competitive when they gave McDonaugh away for free. Vegas was very competitive when they gave Fleury AND Pacioretty away for free. Sometimes it has to happen.
But I very much understand why New York keeps their captain and a big bruising RD.

I would love to add Graves to Toronto. Realistically this trade is Robertson for Graves. I just don't see the value in Pittsburgh doing this.

I am a big fan of adding Trouba to the Leafs D.
But you ain't getting Marner. You are missing a lot of pieces going to the Leafs to make that trade work.

Yes this makes them a playoff team. In saying that, they still may make the playoffs as is!

Next year with Oleksiak and No Willy

I've always liked Bennett's game. He's a total scumbag yet he pretends he isn't. LOL</div></div>
After last years playoffs I concluded that Bennett is a bad human being. I have played enough sports to point out the people who care 0% of the health of the other players. He is one of them. Total scumbag status absolutely. Gudas and Tkachuk played hard and were super annoying but I was okay with that. Bennett on the other hand was running around CLEARLY trying to injure people.
I was really hoping Domi would have won that fight. And then I watched the replayed and I felt as if justice was not done... At least not on that day and at that time. Bennett has it coming to him at some point.
But I do pray that he has a change of heart. Playing hard, doesn't mean intentionally injuring people.
End of rant... haha

He's signed for 3 years so he's not a rental price.</div></div>
They only have 21 pts in 23 games. That's on pace for 75 points. 1 point out but with more games played. The west is super weak right now, so they can still make it happen, but they need a pretty big shift to make it.
And yes I am struggling to know what his value would be. Some people think he is negative value even. What do you think he is worth?

Brodie is such a good dman. He is playing 22 minutes a game for the Leafs and has been excellent for YEARS. I would be happy to add the guys you listed here, but losing Brodie makes no sense. I bet Brodie has more value on the open market than Dumba does. At least similar. So that trade makes no sense.
Value is fair in that Calgary trade, but I have no interest in trading Minten UNLESS we get a genuine star player and he is extended.

Oilers tdl
I like the Larsson add quite a bit. But this bottom 6 is still super underwhelming. I didn't like Edmontons bottom 6 last year and I think this bottom 6 is even worse.
I also really dislike the Connor Brown contract (love the player though). It appears they will be down over 3m in cap space next year, which is SILLY to me.
I think Edmonton has put themselves in a remarkably difficult corner to get out of. Impressively so.
They keep making WEIRD decisions. Getting Ekholm over Chychrun last year is one of those decisions. Ekholm is great but 6m and based on his age, it didn't make sense. Chychrun was a lot younger and his cap hit was a lot less. He would have been such a great fit.
Either way, Edmonton is in trouble.

Yes I just added a note to my comment saying "Cap would also need to come back to Van as well. But that can be sorted out."
So maybe Vanecek and a retained DeSmith are involved as well.
It would be hard to make this work.

I just thought of it. The other piece would need to be Mercer.
Nemec + Mercer + 1st + 2nd for Hughes
Something on those lines. Cap would also need to come back to Van as well. But that can be sorted out.

Nemec is a huge piece. But Vancouver wouldn't make this trade. There is no benefit to them. If they are trading Hughes, their team becomes worse this year, so a pending UFA in Toffoli becomes a lot less valuable.
If a team has the assets to trade for Quinn Hughes, it is New Jersey but I don't think this is the right package. Nemec and the 1st are a very good starting point though, I just see Tofolli as being the wrong target for Vancouver.

Couple big moves
Minny isn't trading Faber and Foligno extended for 4 more years after this one. That is a contract I have zero interest in touching. So the Leafs decline and Minny declines.
Calgary passes very quickly. I believe Tanev will fetch a 1st + 3rd or 1st + prospect at 50% retention. Abruzzese holds minimal value. 2 x 3rds and a 5th is short in value by quite a bit.

Dreaming I guess
I am a huge Pettersson fan but I do believe Hughes has him beat in terms of value. 7 more years at 8m a year and he is 3 years younger. Pettersson is about to get PAID 12-13m a year. I think Jack Hughes may end up being a generational talent or almost. Pettersson is a high end super star but is 1 tier below Hughes. (this is not a negative against Pettersson... it is just a huge compliment about Jack Hughes)
NJD pass. I would expect Vancouver highly considers this though, if they believe Luke Hughes is as good as we all think he will be.

He plays 19 minutes a game and he is HUGE. Has had a very good past few years. His size is definitely something we can add to our blue line. Would you do it at this current price? Or do you expect him to cost more than this?

I would love Stamkos but I think that money would be better suited getting 1 d upgrade. With guys like Hanifin and Pesce available or on a slightly cheaper scale a Dumba, I think that money would be nice to be used there. And in that scenario we may be able to keep a Domi type as well.
But it would be hard for me to complain getting Stamkos in the mix.
