Pretty steep price but I guess the salary retention pushed it from a 3rd to a 2nd.

Do the Canucks realize their 2nd this year will be a borderline 1st-rounder?

Your 800K theory is wrong.</div></div>
Did you not check to see when Kapanen's expiring contract was signed? It was before July 2020. So yes, his qualifying offer was based on the final year's base salary, not the AAV, which only applies to newer contracts (signed after July 10, 2020).

Just to follow up on my point above, that's why you see the best young players signed bridge deals that have no signing bonus in the final year, and they are increasing in salary (back-loaded). Look at the Meier, Tkachuk and Point bridge deals. They have signing bonuses in the first years, but then the final year is a massive base salary with no signing bonus. This will make the QO much higher than the AAV.

I think TheRealisticGuy is right. His base salary was 800k. According to https://www.capfriendly.com/qualifying-offer-calculator, the QO should be 1.05*800k = 840k. You ignore signing bonuses when calculating the qualifying offer: "The qualifying offer is calculated from the players base salary (NHL salary <strong>minus </strong>signing bonus)".

(CAR/SJS) - Lorentz, Mäkiniemi and conditional 2023 3rd rd pick for Burns, Pederson
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jamnjon</b></div><div>I was very happy the team didn't buy out Vlasic. I would much rather have his contract off the books sooner than save more in a meaningless season. Vlasic being there also helps in the Sharks' campaign to Tank Hard for Bedard, whereas Burns actually had some positive value. I would absolutely have preferred a better pick/prospect in return, but I think the Sharks were desperate to get some cap flexibility and that might be the best they were able to find.
The trade from 11 to 27, 34, and 45 was a good value trade. That being said, aside from Havelid at 45, I'm not super happy with who they took with those picks. I'd argue that trade was the most logical move he's made since becoming GM.</div></div>
If the goal is cap flexibility then they should have bought out Vlasic and saved $6.75M. They could plug his spot with some younger players to get some experience. The additional cap penalty of $1.69M that starts in 2026 is peanuts as the cap will go up significantly by then.
If the Sharks wanted to trade Burns, they'd be dealing from a better position of strength if they bought out Vlasic first, since other GMs wouldn't see them as desperate for cap flexibility.

Just FYI, you two repeating that I'm misusing the term doesn't make it so. It is a written defamatory statement that (given the evidence we have) is untrue. Definition of libel.

I'm saying the line "anyone with a shred of decency agrees with me" is evidence that you're too far-gone, not that you're emotionally driven. And it's libelous for you to call him a domestic abuser, unless he's convicted or has admitted to it. His ex accused him of multiple transgressions (including beating her and betting on his own games), the NHL investigated all of it and came up with nothing. What caused Kane to lose his Sharks contract was violating covid restrictions.

Good for Demko, get paid now and still get to be UFA when only 30, which is pretty young for a goalie. Then he can make a big money move to a real team, if he keeps up a good performance.
