<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hammerwise</b></div><div>If you look at it just from point production, then few deals will ever be equal. Toronto in their current non-playoff qualifying form will not improve by moving middling contracts and being so top heavy in my opinion.

And Im not anti-Marner, I'm just looking at contract, return and real team needs or weaknesses. And theres probably a slightly better return somewhere else for a great player like Marner, but in my opinion you're not going to improve the team, by moving the middling dermotts or johnssons, and you're never going to trade a 90 pt player for a 90 pt player.

In the above, looking outside out of points alone you are getting Marner = Domi, Juulsen, 4 good picks and 3-4mil in cap space for a solid RD veteran, and to me I think that's not equal value but it makes the team better.</div></div>

Opinions are useless. This is a crap proposal and makes TO worse. People on here have the opinion that paying depth guys more money and stars less money is smart, it isn't. Kapanen proves this. He gets 3.4 million and was handily outplayed by the Leafs 4th line. The big 4 did everything they could to win and the rest of the team did nothing. So break up the core and add more average players to do nothing is the answer. Defence!!!! Is what idiots will shout but the Leafs defence was not at all the problem in that series it was Korpisalo being a difference. Look at how he's played against Tampa? Columbus has won 3 games so far they had no business winning because he stood on his head.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ithinkimrational</b></div><div>"Montreal *scouts and GMS* are of the last to get to value any player" IMO (considering the failures). But anyways...look.
All Im saying is COl has to move Dmen. You have too many and you can value them as high as you want, but they still have to move. So Sakic will have to pick. Needless to say Makar is going nowhere. Byram probably not either. That leaves one more really. Choose beteween Graves and Girard. Seeing as Girard just got a contract my guess is Graves/Zadorov if not both. There won't be enough money to go around.
I also value Zadorov more than others here. I'd take him as a solid #4 in Mtl.</div></div>

Colorado will trade Zadorov for futures to an eastern team. Graves likely gets kept around 1 more year or at least until Byram has established himself a bit. It's also possible that Cole would get traded before Graves if Sakic wants to keep Graves long-term, but I think Sakic would be inclined to keep Cole around even as a 7D just to insulate Byram a bit, especially if it's a shortened season next year, unless we need to find capspace.

In terms of valuations of our Dmen:

- Byram has #1 LHD upside, but probably becomes a #2D.
- Girard is already our best shutdown Dman statistically, and the best transition Dman in the league (ranked 1st in possession exits, the only Dman over 50% in the league). He's basically a #2 or at worst a #3 already.
- Graves' numbers this year make him a solid top 4 Dman. He leads the league in +/i, 6th in blocks, 2nd on the team in PK minutes, and also has 9 goals and 17 assists for 26 points all without PP time.
- Johnson is borderline top 4 right now. At times he looks like more of a 3rd pairing guy, but a lot of that may be due to injuries.
- Cole is a very solid #5 who can play up in the lineup for short periods.
- Zadorov has potential to play as a #4 and is great at defending in transition 1v1, but realistically he's a #5-6 Dman.
- Timmins is going to surprise a lot of people very soon. Coach Bednar has been testing him out on the PP, PK, and on pairings with Graves and Girard the last couple of days. He could very well step into the team for the round robins and playoffs and play at a top 4 RHD level, the kid is really good.
