Devils next year with Forsberg
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jeuck75</b></div><div>No from NSH, we don't need dmen</div></div>
The idea behind it is if he decded he wants to walk or NSH doesn't want to pay him what he wants, they can get a lot of value for him. NJ works because they will pay a hefty price for a top winger. If you wanted to make it a 3 team deal and trade severson right away for more picks or a forward, that works.

I rather try to sign Forsberg as a UFA than trade for him at the deadline
The cost would be too much for the Devils to pay

I dont think they are paying too much here. This gaurantees they get him for long term rather than risking him going to another team as a UFA, and they also dont need to give him as much money if they have his rights since there is no competition. Severson really does not provide much to NJ, maybe a change of scenery can help him, and the same goes for Kuokkanen since he has really fallen off since last year. Then a top 10 protected 2023 pick, where they should definently be in the playoffs if they have Forseberg. But if they arent, the protection is there.
I think the devils are in desperate need of top winger. If they have to pay extra to make sure they can lock one up, I think they would.

Send Subban or Graves before sending Severson.
Severson is our 2nd best d-man overall. And Nashville is loaded at RD.
Value-wise, 2 years of Severson alone should return 1-year of Forsberg.</div></div>
Idk man.... you REALLY overvalue Severson. I know he has really good advanced analytics but I prefer to analyze with my eyes and what I see is way too many giveaways and poor plays, especially in the d-zone. Also, Graves is our 2nd best defenseman, not Damon... and thats not even close
Also its not 1 year of Forsberg, we sign that extension as part of the trade (7x8)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PreemoForGM</b></div><div>Man after reading all this thread… Patrick Kane does not uproot his family for a mediocre shot a cup run. Why? Because he’s a proven GOAT level player. He grew up a rags fan so maybe rags get Kane.Plus Panarin is more of draw for Kane than Hughes. Kane is not going anywhere unless some franchise sacrifices some amazing futures to get him. AKA Kane will not waive, and even if he did no team in their right mind would dump their future for just 1.5 years of Kane.</div></div>
I never said that he would move here. I said, generally, NJ isn't disliked as a destination for players.
NJ isn't paying "all-in-win-now" prices on any player. Other teams will. We have the youngest team in NHL, one of the best prospect pipelines, a great future. But that future will probably come after Kane signs his next contract (not in next 1.5 years).
And yes, he is the GOAT

Kane Squared
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ChiHawk</b></div><div>You probably don't follow Kane much off the ice, but Kane has spoken many times how Chicago is where he and his family want to remain for many years. He's also talked about wanting to work with the Blackhawks after his playing career. He also is very involved with the legacy players and events which is weird for a current player. He stays year-round in Chicago, trains here, has mentioned all his friends are here now. He's accomplished everything a player can accomplish and that's all tied to Chicago. I don't see him leaving as such unless it's to play in a big city such as the New York Rangers where one of his good friends plays Panarin or the remote possibility to return to Buffalo to fullfill a childhood dream. For all intents and purposes though, he is very committed to the Chicago.
This is also coming from someone who's not a diehard Chicago (the city) fan who moved away 10 years ago for greener pastures.</div></div>
I follow Kane a lot, or at least as much as a non-Blackhawks could. It’s hard not to …as a US hockey fan, he is like our Gretzky. And I don’t doubt anything you are saying.
He probably ends his career with Chicago. I used to say the same about both Brodeur and Zajac. Both finished their careers elsewhere. Both now work for Devils.

Those two do have a relationship...so that is not out of left field.
But don't think they are that tight where one moves to the other.
Probably a bigger question for Kane would be, does he stick around if Chicago goes into rebuild.

Yea, Hughes does actually matter to Kane. Kane has countless times talked about Hughes and how he sees him as the younger version of himself. Also, hes on a hockey team that is 7-12-2 that has no cap space. Im sure hes having a lot of fun with that and would do anything to stay!

New Jersey Devils signed Jack Hughes (8 Years / $8,000,000 AAV)
This is an interesting one.
I think people are getting hung up over the actual dollars, and I get it but we need to remember that ever since Chia blew up the RFA market its been Armageddon. Toronto was famously the first to deal with the fallout and now other teams are too. Any notions of contract value from before need to be discarded as they no longer apply.
People looking at Hughes raw numbers might see a guy with few counting stats, although a good deal of that is obscured by the covid shortening of last season. Here is what they may be missing. The underlying metrics suggest that Hughes is on the verge of a massive breakout and that it has already started. He has been quietly fantastic and the results are only beginning to show on the scoresheet. Getting this done now could save millions if the breakout is as large as we think it may be. Hell even a basic eye test will tell you that the raw skill to be something great is there. It is a gamble, but that is how the RFA market is working right now.
Let me be clear, this is a massive gamble. A very, very risky one. but I think it will work out and I would make it too. Besides I have been saying for years now, if you're going to overpay someone, overpay the young stars.

Great signing by Devils....and great for Hughes too.
I have found there are two types of Hughes detractors out there:
(1) people that never watch him play, just look at point totals, and conclude he is a bust
(2) people who view him as hockey's version of Justin Bieber.
For people that have watched him play, this contract is a good one.
He has dominated many stat categories (possession, passing, zone entries, takeaways, penalties drawn, etc).
That usually leads to bigger point numbers.
Also, he arrived in NJ at 5'10" maybe 145-150 lbs.
He is now 5'11" has added 15 lbs in each off-season, and if that continues, he will be 5'11" 190 lbs by the start of this contract.

The numbers don't tell the story. Anyone who's watched him skate and make plays with the puck knows he's elite. Hughes is not dependent on high scoring wingers to provide offense. Just look at how well Kuokanen and Sharangovich were playing in the second half of last season and compare that to what little they've done this season with Hughes injured. It's night and day. This kid is a rising superstar. All due respect to Suzuki, Pettersson, and others, Hughes creates offense at an elite level. The numbers will come. A+ signing.

I'd rather be strong down the middle with four rock solid centers ... Hughes, Hischier, Mercer, McLeod provides great versatility & creates match up issues for the opposing bench.
Wings can be found ... Centers not so much.
Every great team has a strong spine and in the playoffs, that strength and versatility down the middle gives you a chance to go deep.

Love it. Absolutely love it.
NJD had already gone all in on Hughes and Hischier a while ago. Especially on Hughes. And almost instantly as well. In the year they selected Hughes, they drafted four childhood friends/teammates of Jack’s (Vukojevic, Moynihan, Clarke, McCarthy, etc). They invited others to camp. And most recently just drafted his little brother (a worthwhile pick in his own right). They have not been shy about this being Jack’s team.
Shero had been building a system around speed and puck possession for years and Hughes’ arrival cemented that strategy into place.
So if we paid him $6m or $8m, it doesn’t really matter as the whole thing is built around him anyway. If Jack thrives, the team will be successful. If he fails, the team will likely be unsuccessful.
So the question shouldn’t be whether or not we should have paid him $4m or $6m or $8m. The more fitting question is: Should NJD have hitched their boat to Jack’s? If yes, than of course, pay him $8m x 8.
