I would like to think that he would view this as a good opportunity in maybe his last year to be a true 1A or 1B and play 40-50 games and possibly playoff games. Good opportunity for Levi too

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Wqrrior</b></div><div>I didn't vote No, but I have one question (And my guess is that anyone who does vote No is concerned about the timeline)... Should he really be playing more than 9 NHL games this season? I'm almost always against playing rookies in their draft year, especially on hollow teams. Feel like it will just stunt his long term development.</div></div>
Why does signing his ELC mean he's going to play 9+ NHL games? Getting him under contract allows them to loan him to the AHL though if they prefer him to play there. His European assignment clause means that he would need to agree to play in San Diego instead of Sweden, but if that provides him a quicker road to the NHL, then I'm sure he'd be all about it.
The Kings did the same with Toby Bjornfot a few years ago, and he played his draft year in the AHL instead of Sweden without burning the first season off his ELC.

I think you have to be 18 to sign a contract, which he doesn't turn until July 17th. He will sign on that day I would say.

Frederic will get less than Cates - Cates has approximately the same production as Frederic in 100 fewer games.
I think both sign bridge deals probably in the neighborhood of 2 years $1.75M AAV for Freddy and Sway 2 years $3.5-3.75M

So you do. He seems like a solid option, its just the 2nd and 3rd pairs which remain under-invested, as the Leafs have been doing in this era.

2024-2025 - Matthews at 14M - Nylander at 10M
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheRealisticGuy</b></div><div>Leafs just need to remain competitive, maybe that year won't be their year, but Tavares will go from 11M to 6M like someone mentionned above. They will use that money + the cap raising for Marner extension + filling holes. They had a great roster last year, but they lost to FLO. It was their year, their next 'this is their year' will be 2025-2026 if they still have the core 4 around</div></div>
Seems like they will barely remain competitive, in terms of maybe getting to the second round, if they do this and then have to pay Marner 13 mil and fill the rest of their roster (including replacing Brodie) even if JT signs for half. I mean, IF the cap goes up by $4 mil every year for the rest of the decade, the Nylander deal will be good value by like 2026 if he stays at scoring 40 goals and not really forechecking or playing much defense, but there's a danger that the team misses its window given how much of a shave the defense and bottom six will take.

This is the best take.
And yeah, Montreal's not in a position to trade anything to dump Hoffman and don't even have a guaranteed roster spot for Hoffman/Katchouk.

I think at the end of current contract you could get Tavares for around what Geno makes which is 6.1 mil saves 5 mil that could be split between the LW and be somewhat useful.

It would all be dependent on how much cap increases per year, but its not horrendous. Also, would eventually have 11 mil come off the books after Tavares deal expires.

Lafreniere contract
I think that's a realistic deal. With the year he had, I doubt it's much more than what Kakko got. I'm thinking anywhere between 2.1M-2.3M is realistic, maybe as high as 2.5M.
2 years is almost a guarantee at this point. Gives them space to renew Kakko and Schneider next year, as we're likely to see a significant rise in the cap. If Laf impresses, it's very possible both Trouba and Goodrow iare traded to make room for him, as well as Miller and Igors new deals.

Karlsson
Need to add Rutta as well. PIT would need to clear as much cap as possible for the next two years to take Karlsson at full cap hit. I wouldn't be opposed to it though as I view Petry a million overpaid, Granlund three million overpaid, and Rutta a million overpaid. So five million is better spent on the risk that is Karlsson than those three.

I disagree that he's better. Like I said in a previous comment, they're two completely different players. Newhook needs to play offensive style hockey whereas Colton is more the opposite.

Excellent deal IMO. He should have got more. He and Dach could look like absolute steals on their contracts in a years time or even as much as next year. If he improves with the added ice time and coaching from MSL to the same level Dach did last year, they'll be extremely happy with this contract and deal as a whole. Still has to prove it though.

2 different players. Newhook is young with top 6 upside. He's someone you get as a core player that can help you build a winner.
Colton is a final touch player who you don't build around, you acquire when you're contending for a cup as the finishing touch.

How many 'Elite' players can we have in the league before the word is meaningless....?

He is 3LW right now who tries to be a playmaker but isn't developed enough there but still makes regular mistakes/reads. Montreal is paying him as a 3LW so it's a good deal but he was not fitting into what Colorado needed as a 3LW nor a suitable 3C candidate.
He could have been a prospective 2LW for us but getting Drouin at less than $900k made him superfluous on the roster.</div></div>
It's really the Lehkonen reasoning for Montreal. It makes sense here for Montreal and Colorado. Same with the Lehkonen situation.
