Canes Finally Make a Giant Deadline Move
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ecupirate07</b></div><div>I don’t see the value in Norris. Hurt a lot, costs a lot, and isnt Rod type center</div></div>
It's an easy answer. He's very young (doesn't turn 25 until May), has offensive skill, is fully termed for 6 more seasons, and a buy-low candidate.

I don't know if that is necessarily the case. The fear with Compher was that his production wouldn't translate outside of the Colorado juggernaut. It pretty clearly has. That's why I think a pickup is less risky now.

I know hes not available but Copp idea
Trade package being somewhat steep aside, Copp vs. Compher is an interesting debate. This was my original trade proposal for Compher. If Copp is truly as underrated as it seems, why did Yzerman make that move in the offseason for Compher? Also, the right-handedness is a better fit in Carolina generally-speaking; they've really struggled at the dot against RH opponents.

Their faceoff numbers have been total dogs***, though, especially Necas's. That's partly why names like Giroux have been scattered around a bit even though he isn't likely to waive his NMC.

But he's played really well, is a right-handed C (important), and has 4 seasons of prime years locked up. That's worth a LOT.

Smaller Trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac555</b></div><div>I really don’t think the Canes would move a 1st for Murphy. If this was the direction they’d go, there are cheaper and younger D with term who they’d target.</div></div>
You're probably thinking Ferraro, but IMO handedness is an issue unless you're of the view that Orlov can play his off-hand for a full season. That's a pretty significant risk. As for younger RHD, Andersson is only getting dealt for a massive return. There's not a lot of young top-4 RHD that is ever available for trade because teams tend to hold onto such players like precious jewels short of a trade demand.
Because of that reality, I could see the Canes going into the veteran-without-a-cup well again to succeed Pesce, as it has worked so well with Burns. I mentioned Chris Tanev before, but though he's my personal preference, even a 2 year extension is somewhat risky at age 34. Murphy is only 30, is underrated defensively for an awful team, and his contract expires when he's 33. That term is still likely to be full of pretty useful veteran play.

We've discussed this before, but I think it's a matter of priorities for the Giroux camp. Is being closer to home more important or is being closer to the Stanley Cup more important? Because the Hurricanes as a team are getting very close to the latter, at least IMO.

Uhhh...Hanifin's a UFA. He's going for a typical UFA price. Lindholm didn't get a top-4 prospect from Vancouver, and that was with a cap dump. The Canes can swallow Hanifin's contract whole.

That's a good trade. In fact, I could see a trade exactly like this on deadline day. It would be like this year's version of the Dadonov for Gurianov swap (which Dallas won, but besides the point).

I get that. The issue with Andersson is that acquiring him likely requires a piece like Necas to get completed due to the high-value term on his contract. Hanifin is the more realistic play, especially because Orlov can play both sides. There's also a significant "best player available" argument in favor of getting Hanifin as Pesce's successor.

Weegar is valuable long-term to the Canes because Pesce is likely to get the Brinks truck. Doing the trade now is to give Weegar an adjustment period in our system before he and Orlov take over top-4 spots after Skjei and Pesce get their UFA payments.

Canes have over 6M in deadline space. All of these moves fit under said space. I didn't place the modification yet.

Connor Murphy makes plenty of sense in the medium-term. I'm sure that he would love to waive to a top contender. Jeff Carter is...a bad idea. If you're going to acquire a vegetable to sit on the bench, get a guy who hasn't won the Cup yet. Someone like Okposo, for example.

Giving Greig an 8 year deal
Being a Canes fan, I'm in the luxurious position of not needing to be envious of any team, however, I don't think there's any team in the NHL who wouldn't want Greig on their team, similar to Young Tom Wilson. He should get the 8 year max.

I totally get your point, and most teams tend to follow this line of thinking. The Canes were notoriously successful weaseling their way out of Hamilton's $9M/year, however, first with DeAngelo and then with the ultimate "veteran-without-a-Cup" Brent Burns. They're IMO going to go for a similar plan with the Pesce spot.

Canes are usually fearful of long-term contracts to 29-31 year olds (with exceptions, of course. They're going to do so for Slavin). I feel like the Canes will Moneyball Pesce's spot for a few seasons until a long-term guy pans out. What Caniac2000 and I are talking about is the possibility that Pesce's spot could be filled by a "veteran-without-a-Cup" type of player, like what the Canes found with Burns.

It's a risky play for a full-season, I think. He hasn't played a season on his off-hand in years, at this point.

It's much easier to move Orlov to the right and find bottom pairing defensemen than spend all this money on a RD we don't need</div></div>
To me, the only time you play a D on his off-hand is if the player prefers it (like Weegar or TJ Brodie, for example) or if there are injuries. Canes otherwise like a strong-side defense and should maintain strong-side pairings. The RHD market is full of overpayment candidates right now, but Tanev, Dumba, and (effectively) Brodie stand out to me as players who could take a contract between 1-2 years and play effective defense in a second-pair role.
