The other is Hossa to Ottawa. Though unlike Tkachuk, Hossa wasn't aware he was being traded as part of that contract signing. That's why the Tkachuk deal is called the first "true" Sign and Trade in NHL history

Tkachuk was signed prior to the trade because he was not legally able to sign an 8 year extension with the Panthers. Due to the covid CBA change a player must be on your roster prior to the TDL of final year of their contract to sign an 8 year extension with your team. That is also why LA only signed Fiala to a 7 year deal. With a player going into the final year of their contract they are still able to sign an 8 deal with a new team because that TDL before it ends has not passed yet. In this case if lets say Matthews is not signed to a new deal by next years trade deadline then the only team that can sign him to an 8 year deal after the TDL is Toronto, however if he hits unrestricted free agency then on July 1st 2024 then no team can sign him to anything more than 7 years including Toronto. Going back to Tkachuk, Calgary still retained Tkachuk's rights after July 1st due to being a restricted free agent, but no team owns your rights if you become an unrestricted free agent
