Ferland on the IR for Opening Night and a midterm Hughes contract
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Boltsbeathabs</b></div><div>If Petterson was going to sign that cheap he'd be signed already.</div></div>
That's fair value for a bridge deal, a longer deal would entail a cap hit in the range of $8.5M-$9.5M. The Canucks cannot afford to extend Pettersson at that AAV so they are likely pushing for a bridge deal.

I think we just get bored cuz it's the offseason so people start freaking out about signings that'll take time to get done.

Don't forget that to qualify for UFA status, one has to be at least 27 years old too, while Quinn is 21 at the moment.

Potential Hughes Pettersson Matching Contracts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheAlien</b></div><div>Doesn't sound like he cares about that right now. The holding point seems to be that he wants a 7 or 8 year deal and the Canucks can't afford to give him that</div></div>
This is what I've been hearing too, the recent RFA Dmen signings makes an 8 year extension for Quinn really expensive at the moment. Hughes may have a 10.2c clause which reduces his leverage but still, I don't think a 8 year extension is feasible for Hughes given the canucks' current cap situation.

Potential Hughes Pettersson Matching Contracts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HOCKEYBOY448</b></div><div>If I’m him I’d push 3 year bridge then. Then accept the qualifying offer at like a 5% raise each year or whatever it is and leave in 5 years. Nothing personal with Vancouver, just be really cool to play with my brothers on the same team.</div></div>
The Devils would sell so many jerseys if they had all three Hugheses.

For reference, a 5 year contract would carry him to UFA.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>cshores</b></div><div>Hughes $6 times 4yrs or $7 times 6 yrs</div></div>
I think if the Canucks want to go long term with Hughes, it'll take more than $7 million, the AAV probably in the neighbourhood of $7.5 to 8.5 million for a long term contract.

I made this with the assumption that he would be offer sheeted, May as well plan for the worst when we have the cap room to spare.

That's likely what a Pettersson offer sheet would look like. But it's not my guess, the figure comes from James Mirtle and Dom Luszczyszyn of the Athletic.

Schmidt Question From Nucks Fan
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Lenny7</b></div><div>Problem is, unless they send back a bunch of money, it doesn't make sense for them to do it.
Let's say it's Gudas. At that point, the team would have a total of $17.159 mil in cap space next offseason, with only 11 players signed. Say Barkov takes $10.5 of that. There's $6.69 in space left. with 9-10 players needed to fill the 22 man roster.</div></div>
This. There isn't a fit for Schmidt's contract in the roster which is what makes moving him a hard sell.

To elaborate a little, The Canucks won't retain in a trade where you are giving us a cap dump (Thomas Hickey). Get rid of the retention and this is a good trade. Considering NYI's cap situation, I don't know if that trade is feasible though.

After the Schenn rumours we may not need to buy anyone else out after all
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>kingkanuck</b></div><div>Except Zack is really not a center...he took 8 draws last season and was 50% . So they still need a 4th line centre who can win faceoffs...don't know where you can find one for $681K. At the very least Holtby has to go. Brandon Sutter was 18th best in the league. He took 497 draws and won 55.5% of them, or they could try and convince Aidan McDonough to sign and find out how good he is.</div></div>
We have the cap space to sign someone like Jujhar Khaira who is an effective 4C, Sutter is a good option too.

He isn't ready for the NHL yet, he still needs another year. Considering that it took Demko 3 years in the AHL to become a regular NHL back-up and DiPietro has only had a year in the AHL prior to last year where he played 4 AHL games, he likely needs a bit more time.
