Carolina Hurricanes signed Jeremy Bracco (1 Year / $700,000 AAV)
Bracco had some personal issues in Toronto, so I hope this fresh start is good for him. I think Carolina is the right kind of organization to take a chance on a talented player like him.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Mikhail Abramov (3 Years / $809,444 AAV)

Quoting: drewjenkins

I mean ... he's certainly playing like it:
Nick Abruzzese | TOR | 124th Overall (2019)
2019-20 Stats = NCAA (Rookie)
Games Played = 31
Points / Game = 1.42
Points / 82 GP = 117
Alex Turcotte | LAK | 5th Overall (2019)
2019-20 Stats = NCAA (Rookie)
Games Played = 29
Points / Game = 0.89
Points / 82 GP = 73
Cole Caufield | MTL | 15th Overall (2019)
2019-20 Stats = NCAA (Rookie)
Games Played = 36
Points / Game = 1.00
Points / 82 GP = 82
It's also fair (and obvious) to note that:
Kapanen ($3,200,000 x 3 years)
Johnsson ($3,400,000 x 4 years)
Kerfoot ($3,500,000 x 4 years)
Engvall ($1,200,000 x 2 years)
Muzzin ($5,600,000 x 4 years)
Have all signed extremely fair (some below market value) extensions since the AM + MM extensions.
And that all the star forwards who signed bridge deals are going to get paid when they expire (Tkachuk, Laine, Boeser, Point, McAvoy, etc).
If next years cap is in the middle of NHL estimates ($86,000,000) than we can expect much larger increases via Seattle + the new US TV deal.
Which will also give the Leafs tons of cap-space in the last 2-3 years of the Matthews, Marner and Nylander's contracts (during their prime).

I'm excited about Nick Abruzzese's NCAA season as well, but bear in mind that he is 2 years older than Caufield and Turcotte. It's more like his Junior year in college.
Also note that this contract is for Mikhail Abramov, confusing because the Leafs mostly drafted Nick's and Mick's in 2019.

Dubas has been implementing a no performance bonus policy, with the incentive to the player that it will be easier to burn off a year of your ELC quicker (see Sandin & Robertson). I think he's taking it a step further with the lower than usual AAV since the leafs are so tight to the cap. I'm pretty sure that if Abramov's contract slides after next season, his cap hit would be 785,000.

The trade in a vacuum makes sense. Decent value for both sides. But it doesn't make sense for Toronto to mortgage the future this much for a rental and a back-up.

Trading Trouba and some others
The Trouba deal is a pretty cool idea, one of the more original ones here. The value is pretty good on both sides but the deal would never happen. The leafs are not even contemplating trading Nylander. And Trouba openly does not want to live in Canada (wife and dad stuff), so the leafs shouldn't trade for him. Cool thought though!

Quoting: blowing_the_zone

If Muzzin was a rhd things would be just about perfect.

I agree that Muzzin is excellent at hockey, and I'd love if he stayed a leaf.
Since he's left handed, 31 and will probably be in the 5-6M range, would it be that ridiculous to re-sign Ceci instead? That's only IF Ceci continues to play well and even improves some.
The team above is an example of a pretty low cap increase, and of a longer term deal with Dermott having a higher AAV.

New lines
Oh man, that's a really average bottom six. Hope babs will try those D-pairing. He's been giving the Matthews line a ridiculous percentage of O-zone starts, they could do the same with Rielly-Barrie.
This is what Spezza is here for...

Kapa
I don't think that deal lines up with TOR's long term plans, they really don't need another pending UFA Dman. But it's a pretty fair trade. One minor tweak, TOR cannot take any extra cap $ this year, so if Edmundson's salary is retained 50% then there's only a 5k cap change. Reimer would be a nice backup for this year and next. Plus Steve Dangle would have an explosive orgasm every second half of a back to back. I'll give it a B+ for creativity and because it was Kapanen and not Willy.

I'd say the leafs really don't need a guy like Strome since Kerfoot looks really good at 3C. But the leafs take this trade and run, the Cat contract is sooo nice compared to Marners.

I like this team better than the team I just made. Except the Clifford contract, Dubie can dig up something cheaper and just as good for the 4th line. Spend that money on a better back-up.

Evaluate talent

Quoting: Leaf_Fan_93

Petan > Bracco. Petan has more experience and right now is better offensively and a more complete player. I really hope he gets a shot with Tavares/Hyman because I think getting 15-18 minutes a night with those guys and some PP2 that he will produce. Keep the other lines together and plug Petan in Marner's spot. You don't need to remake your lineup because of one injury.

Yea I agree that's more likely to happen at first. If Petan doesn't produce I'd like to see Bracco given the chance. The idea with Bracco or Petan in that spot is that you don't have to remake the lineup, you get to leave the third line alone.

Why Petan can still be traded
Also teams don't want to make space on their NHL roster for a fringe player. Petan becomes more valuable to teams when he clears waivers as teams have more freedom to play him either in the bigs or AHL.

Intriguing. The only reason I can't see this happening is that babs likes having a left and right shot on the fourth line for faceoffs so far. Would be nice to give Engvall or some other AHLers a look.

Is Jensen really a fit

Quoting: SammyT_51

I can definitely see him as a fit for a team like Toronto or Tampa where they love to attack and Jensens skating is great. I was actually kinda surprised how good it actually was. He can get the puck out with ease. What would you like for him if Toronto called? (considering they would trade Ceci at that point)

I was dying for Jensen to come to the leafs last year! They would need to unload Ceci's contract (and could retain $$), and guys available are Moore, Timashov, Bracco, none of whom quite make for a fair deal.... Any interest in Hyman or Mikheyev? I'd hate to see Mikheyev go, but he'd fit in with the RMNB. As much as ACGM thinks Kapanen and Johnsson are available, they probably aren't.
